That's because the G5 processor (8540) that Motorola outlined will not be used in any Apple products. It is mainly meant for network applications, thus there is no need for AltiVec.

So what? The desktop version of the g5 HAS to have altivec. Apple would demand it, and since apple is reportedly doing some of the design...
But really, apple has thrown a lot of money at altivec and would not abandon it for anything less than altivec 2.

I was referring to Motorola's roadmap for the G5 family of processors, not just the MPC8450, which obviously is not intended for desktops.

Don't get me wrong, I like the flat panel iMac, actually own an iMac, and I like the Mac mini, but...........
