I downloaded approx half of it, now it doesnt work anymore

    stopped downloading

    maybe they pulled it?

    these are the changes:

    The Java 1.4.1 update adds the following enhancements :

    ? \tImproved Java applet support for Safari and other web browsers that support the Java Internet Plug-In.

    ? \tUp-to-date with the latest Java release from Sun, with hundreds of new features, including built-in support for XML-based web services, enhanced client functionality, and improved performance and reliability.

    ? \tJava applications take better advantage of Aqua and Quartz Extreme.

    ? \tJava applications now fully leverage the built-in Universal Access features of Mac OS X v10.2.

    ? \tJava applications can now be controlled through AppleScript, via the new UI Scripting technology (http://www.apple.com/applescript/GUI/).

    i aint done yet

    luckily the SU has a sort of resumble download function... after a few min it contniues to download... then throttles down... almost stopping. Its as if from wherever I'm downloading from, the file isnt actually there yet and Im downloading it as its getting uploaded to that server... or something.

    does that make any sense?

    Anyway Defiant... notice any differences?

    Java is a development framework and a part of Mac OS X!!

    Is Java an application that you can run?

    You wouldn't post a Cocoa thread in Software, would you?

    Doesn't seem any faster to me.

    When running appletviewer I see error messages coming up in the terminal.

    If I drag part of the appletviewer window off the screen, the bar at the bottom that normally says "applet started" gets painted over with part of my graphics.

    I'm not really impressed.

    What can we run to test the speed of our updated Java?

    I couldn't find a Java Speed Test out there that actually guages how snappy java is running,....

    Finally? I'm worried about "finally"... I'll find out how worried I need to be in a few minutes. As of Developer Preview 10, I still saw a number of problems, especially with applets and with using the Aqua look-and-feel in a non-Cocoa, cross-platform Java applet/application. I have a hard time imagining that everything that I saw wrong has been fixed so soon.

    Well... time to go download and find out where things stand.

    1.4.1.... released too soon.

    Here's my applet running under Java 1.3.1 and OS X (which is how, not counting the Aqua stuff, it looks on Windows or Linux). Note the nice smooth edges on the Moon images.

    Now, here's what 1.4.1 does with the same applet:

    Jagged edges from what should be perfectly good drawing code, a few of the buttons squished so small the label text leaks out, tabs on the tabbed panel, and pop-up menus that now eat up more vertical real estate than they did before, making screen layout tougher to do on the Mac than on other platforms...

    Grrr.

    Since this is a final, public release, all I can do now is...

       if (it's a Mac and Java 1.4.1) {

          hack...

          hack...

          hack...

       }

    Well, I missed one important thing. I forgot to download the 1.4.1 developer tools that are now available from apple's developer site.

    That said, if I recompile my stuff with the 1.4.1 compiler, some things do run noticeably faster now. On the other hand, one animated 3D ray-traced graphic thing I did now runs faster, but pauses briefly every second or two. (though the old version ran so slow it appeared to "pause" several times per second.)
