Along with the iPhone SMS exploit, the DEFCON convention in Las Vegas last week also revealed a vulnerability in Apple keyboards, exploiting the hardware's 8kb of flash memory and 256 bytes of RAM.

Yet another reason why they can have my Apple Extended when they pry it form under my cold, dead fingers.

TV is a transitional appliance, which I could see merged with something else at some point. Besides, doesn't iTunes mostly replicate what an TV does?

Now I connect my MBP to my HDTV for slideshows or showing my work to groups of people (controlled from across the room with Bluetooth mouse and keyboard).

Having a dedicated, networked, internet enabled Mac connected to my TV, with a Blu-ray player on the side, would be great. A mini is perfect for that. I can even mount it to the swing arm the TV is on.

Playing Call of Duty 4 on such a big screen is kinda trippy, too.

The iPad will augment existing devices, not replace the TV or the Mac mini. It would be for an entirely different purpose/market; everything from a handheld movie viewer/gaming device, to portable music, note taking and even with the addition of external scanners and such (iPhone 3.0 supports them, yes?) could be used by medical staff or FedEx/UPS. Especially if there's a 3G/4G enabled version!

I'd LOVE to have a Lite version of Vectorworks running on this thing!

If done right, it could open up huge markets AND be a way to sneak Macs through the back doors of PC entrenched businesses. I see potentially greater impact than the iPhone has had/is having in that area.

Absolutely never happen in a million years that this thing would have a "VGA out" port. It *might* have mini-display port, but since the thing itself is supposed to be "the display," I don't think you've thought that through. Way more likely that it will have the iPod connector only, (with a mini-USB adapter perhaps in the EU.)

And it's very very unlikely that it would run Desktop OS-X that it needs to do that to run a Powerpoint presentation, or that having Desktop OS-X would actually be useful.

I think what you fail to understand is that this is going to be a bleeding edge device if it exists at all. You've described a 1990's era tablet running an old OS, when in fact, Apple is (hopefully) working on something new.

Why would a portable wireless device need VGA out or Ethernet cables? Perhaps you want to add some removable batteries and a little plastic stylus as well? Maybe a crank on the side to power it up? How about some giant docking station with a zillion ports and blinking lights to lay it in on your desktop?

Tablet makers have for years just stuck the desktop OS on the tablet and given the user a pen instead of a mouse. If this is just more of the same then it's doomed to fail just like all the tablets before it. I don't think you really "get" this product at all.

Author Tiernan Ray suggests that the portable device could possibly debut within the next six weeks. But According to AppleInsider's own sources, Apple's expected new tablet device, with a 10" display and integrated 3G service, is not anticipated to arrive before early 2010.

"One veteran analyst who has seen first-hand a prototype slate-style computer from Apple says the device could be announced in September for release in November," the story reads. "Whatever the exact dates, the computer industry is so anxious to see what Apple introduces that it has held off on competing designs until Apple CEO Steve Jobs gives the device his final blessing."

Jobs will again upstage the CES as he did with the iPhone release in 2007, which is one reason he turned down the keynote at CES.

Besides, a new/updated iPod touch will be released in September and gotta spread out the goodies a bit.

Sounds like you are one of the true believers in Apple's supposedly "bad security," so it's probably not worth discussing it with you.

However, what you're pointing out above, and what is conveniently being left out of the discussion is that it requires a tojan horse attack to get the firmware on the device. You can hide the code in a program, but the user still has to install and run the program. I've never installed anything from an un-trusted source and most normal users haven't either.

This is yet another attack that requires the user to visit a dodgy porn site basically.

You can tell an exploit is BS generally by rating the language of the person announcing it. If it's full of hyperbole and braggadocio then said person is either an idiot or so scared that his exploit is not really that bad-ass that they feel obliged to exaggerate.

When you get to the part where the guy says "all you have to do is first exploit one of the Macs many weaknesses ..." you can basically stop reading because it's obvious the guy has a giant axe to grind there.

I'm also hoping it's more fully-functional than being focused on watching movies and playing games. It'd be nice to have such a small form factor to do real work on. I'd like it to have a mini DisplayPort for connectivity to external display devices for presentations. Realistically, Apple can't make it too powerful and capable without cannibalizing their MacBook lines.

I'm hoping for the same thing (more a mini-computer than a super-duper iPod).

Unless this product is just a new iPod that is being confused with the actual tablet, it doesn't make much sense to me. The way this analyst describes it, it just sounds like a bigger iPod. If that's true then it will kind of upstage the new iPods we all ready know about won't it? Why even call it a tablet if all it is, is a media device like the current iPod? Wouldn't that make it "iPod Jumbo" and not a tablet at all?

I'm not sure what will happen or when, but this person's analysis seems pretty off-base to me.

Of course apple will have a gaming/book reading device out soon . The multi touch was first made for the NEXT/BE DREAM from so long ago. APPLE had to change the world twice before getting back to it: . But i remember what steve was doing right before he came back ./

I bet it folds like a book. Set it like a teepee to get a good angle on the table or iChat. Flip it around and type on the table side and look at the screen. Fold it and it's not really 10 inches diagonal any more (too big for a pocket) but 5" diagonal.

I'd almost bet they call it the macbook and scrap the white plastic macbook, but they seem to be sellin'.

    FIRE WIRE is dead

    Standard iPod Dock Adaptor port.

    Standard headphone/mic jack.

    Bluetooth & Wi-Fi.

mini-DisplayPort? Maybe, it might be a good selling point.

    FireWire is FAR from dead.

USB is slow and inefficient for anything but input devices like keyboards and mice.

FireWire 400 is faster than USB2. Don't even try to pit USB2 against FireWire 800.

    http://www.usb-ware.com/firewire-vs-usb.htm

With the standard iPod Dock adaptor port FireWire and USB would certainly be unecessary on a device like this. Whatever it ends up being.

Great. If someone breaks into my home they could do terrible things with the keyboard on my Macintosh. I better close my windows, just in case someone's profiling me as a potential Apple Computer user with an Apple Keyboard. I think the value of this is limited to the likes of pranks in computer labs, and even then I doubt anybody will go through all the trouble...

Some of these security issues truly do warrant a quick responses, such as the SMS hack earlier, but things like this can wait just fine and dandy-like until the next OS X update comes out and addresses them.

I think any decent hacker would want a phone-home process which *isn't* visible by the end user, don't you? And still, the purpose of phoning home is to convey information. So you'd still need an application to transmit that data (say, logged input), to capture the data, to do something with the data after it were communicated back to the computer, to make it possible to communicate back to the computer or apply the necessary networking changes. At the very least something which makes it possible to install said program remotely. I guess there'd be time for that during the violent in-home computer keyboard invasion.

The real give-away is in the paper itself, which says:
Many other devices have firmware update mechanisms that we believe can also be exploited by attackers for malicious purposes.
So, what you have is a general class of flaws, being demonstrated on an Apple in order to get more hype and fame. Seems to be a typical black hat conference strategy these days.

Also, there is an easy way for end users to protect themselves from this. Use a third party keyboard. This bit of advice is conveniently left out of any of the articles, but if security is an issue in you workplace, I would probably advise it.
