What if there were no more buttons - single click only, however the mouse notices which finger you press with, left side, right side, or both - then behaves appropriately. Just a thought. Then if the top was sensitive to touch you could use to scroll too - all with less moving parts.
I just don't 'get' the concept of a multi-touch mouse.
So I've got a hunk of plastic that I move around on my desk, and I'm supposed to move my fingers around on top of it, too? What? That's stupid.
Actually if you look at the video on Gizmodo the MS mouse with multitouch (a sleek looking black mouse - not one of the ones pictured here) has some nice features - the mouse actions you are used to with an almost trackball like functionality to allow for not only scrolling but moving through images etc (like coverflow for example). You can also use it to do all the typical multitouch stuff like zooming in on photos etc...It also gives a bit more control over scrolling windows etc as you can control the scroll speed by how fast your finger moves etc... Looks pretty cool actually. Still I assume MS has to do it with cameras since Apple owns the patents on other types of touch surfaces so Apple could really do something cool with it if they want to.
are these pieces of sh... the best they could come up with?
Keep this junk in your closets microsoft, just cause the internet did not evolve into the "visonary" microsoft network bill gates envisioned, doesn't mean you can throw whatever garbage you have in the closet out for everyone to see.
have some shame already.
Funny though that they declared they had a visionary masterful multitouch rendition with their "surface". Well, another failed idea to go along with the ms bob from the company who's never done a single thing right unless they copied it off somebody else.
That's a matter of opinion. Some put style first. Some want a balance. For all the ergonomics concerns that regular keyboard bring, how many people do you know that use those split/angled keyboards? In this case, it may not be a style issue, but the point is that whatever works for someone is what they use.
And I love my Mighty Mouse. It works for me. Although the scroll ball mechanism is problematic, I do love the way it scrolls and would not go back to a regular wheel mouse. Apple has needed to address the malfunctions caused by dirt/grease/whatever getting into the scroll ball mechanism, and they have now done so. I will buy the new mouse as soon as it is available.
I too love my bt mighty mouse. It's not a 15 button monstrosity, it's sleek, lovely looking - love the scroll button and the side ones that for a change are unobtrusive -, never has bt reception problems and is super functional. I also love the one button thing, why add an extra button when you can have a sleek polished one button surface that can regognize touch and act as a two button mouse.
In essence apple has already enabled a touch sensitive device in the new mighty mouse in that it senses when you mean to click a button just by the physical position of a finger on it and not an actual button.
Some people just love to hate it cause they got a bad batch maybe. Well guess what I had ms and logitech mice and they all went sour at some point, it's the nature of the mouse to be temperamental and break up easily (easily in terms of other equipment failure rates). Get another apple mighty mouse and enjoy it.
Some others are control freaks who enjoy that 15 button fugly mouse from ms or logitech. Well, to each his own.

As long as your BT mighty mouse *works*, it's a thing of beauty. Fortunately, mine has been working since early June. I hope it stays that way. It took me 3 attempts to get on that wasn't defective out of the box or to get one that didn't become defective within a week. I also have a wired MM that is still good, too. As it stands now, i wouldn't se any other mouse currently on the market. Of the "big" mice, I foiund the Logitech G9 to be wonderful, although a bit on the bulky side. I can't deal with big, heavy mice you have to really push around.
The only other thing I'd love to use is the Bamboo Touch by Wacom, but it looks like Apple's got that covered already, so all I have to do now is wait.
Ahem-the mouse is not supposed to be stylish. Form over function need not apply here- that's the reason Apple's always FAIL. Just look at the stylish MealyMouse and Hockeypuck as proof.
Who cares?
I HATE mice. Inaccurate, ergonomic nightmares all!
Gimme a trackball, Wacom tablet or even multi-touch over mousie shite.
The only thing that amazes me here, is the reliability of MS's vaporware game. They master the strategy of "as soon as somebody seems to have something ready that might eventually be good, say "we too" immediately" since more than 20 years... Apple tablet rumors getting about real? Here is our 3D animation of a tablet device. Apple multi-touch mouse about ready? Here are our prototypes. Hilarious. But compared to these "prototypes", the MS lady playing a five-key piano on a vertical screen (wtf?) during AllThingsD did not even look that desperate.
You hit it on the head.
This is what MS considers "innovation" and they've been doing it since the 80s.
Someone has a real, functioning, shipping product. MS suddenly announces "the real thing" (pure vaporware) from the real, legitimate business-oriented company, Microsoft. Then they wait for interest and sales to drop from the actual, real shipping product and eventually ship (or not) some lame facsimile.
Who makes "your" mice and slaps your label on them? Logitech? Kensington?
Sorry Bill, Ballmer and the rest of you cheesy, scamming, lying Microsoft dorks... most of the world ain't a-gonna buy into that malarkey any more. Do something real without resorting to industrial espionage, that actually ships and see how it does in the open market.
Well, damn, when you actually try to compete... XBox, Zune, Plays4Sure... and goddam if it didn't turn out that nobody likes your garbage. Unless you pour billions of dollars into XBox, so you can try and trick people into thinking you actually DID something successful on it's own merits.
We all know that you got to where you are by dumb luck, lying, cheating and stealing. And it sure does show when the playing field is level!
These are prototypes... I doubt that if any would come to production that they would look like this.
But then again, with a mouse, I'll ALWAYS take function over form. That's why my first purchase with any Apple computer I had was a new mouse, and always one that had TWO buttons. So sad that even STILL, their laptops only have one button. Two finger press thing always irked me when I had an MBP (and it never worked right in Windows).
But like many others say, and I will contune to do:
This is NOT APPLE news!!! I really don't care what MS has in store. I want to know about Apple's products. Grr.
(I'd be very sad if AI plugs MS stories because they know the vast hatred of MS among Apple fans, and with such will get more hits on their pages.)
The apple mouse can have the right side set as right click. the multi touch can have two touch as right click. I hated mouses since using the old thinkpad buttons and red dot thing. but i love the multitouch on my macbook pro. let's see if apple can impress us ALL this time around.
Anyway, why is it whenever we get a post not about apple people say this is not apple news. how many forums do you want to read. i like reading about apple and the competition. at least we'll know what's out there from one source.
You do go on- don't you?? We sometimes refer to that as diarrhea of the mouth where I come from.
Considering how many posts you have on here regarding the subject (that do tend to come off as nothing more than rants sometimes), I don't think I would spout off too much about diarrhea of the mouth.
If this is a mouse, I will just use my f....king fingers. They are so ugly, I will never touch any of them.
These retards at Microsoft have no shame! I can't believe they will actually put these pictures for anyone to see. Disgusting!
MS doesn't know how to design. And when they do come up with something interesting, no one cares anymore (i.e., Zune HD.)
This has always been the MS way. Now they're in the habit of showcasing vapourware in an attempt to one-up Apple in the "upcoming products" department. it would be funny if it wasn't so sad.
I found that regardless of brand, if one has a mouse plugged into a cheap un-powered USB hub that is plugged into a Mac (or computer running Mac OS X), when the machine comes out of sleep, the mouse will not respond. I suggest trying to plug the mouse into a USB port on the machine itself. Of course, you may have that done already, and in that case I would give MS a call, or bring your Mac into an Apple Store for help. (Oddly, I've never had the issue with Windows or Linux)
Hmmm...
I have a Kensington Expert Mouse Pro trackball (best "mouse" on the planet), plugged into a MacAlly ICEKey keyboard, plugged into a Kensington powered USB hub (one of those cute little silver domes), plugged into my MacBook Pro.
Whether I hit the trackball or the keyboard, my Mac wakes up every time.
I'd suggest updating the driver or trying a different mouse driver.

Vaporware coming from Microsoft is nothing new. MS built their business on showcasing vaporware in order to scare people into waiting for the "REAL THING" from Microsoft.
There are many names of companies long gone who were killed off or irreparably damaged by MS' tactics: Ashton-Tate, Borland and Lotus come to mind.
It's all been pretty well documented, I'm sure one could find an exhaustive list somewhere.

Since he's not actually speaking, it's a multi-touch variant... diarrhea digitatis? Something to do with fingers and keyboards. It's similar fork-to-mouth disease, but confined to the finger tips.

No, it isn't.
It's all about fewer moving parts. The fewer buttons, dials, levers and whatnot, the better.

I changed the post!!! Re-read it pleez. Must you take everything so literal?
Nice save! ... thank God for re-edits, huh?
I've tried playing with a ZuneHD but it's been sold out at Best Buy for like 3 weeks now. Even their floor model has been taken!
Are you actually telling us they sold them BOTH, unbelievable!
You do go on- don't you?? We sometimes refer to that as diarrhea of the mouth where I come from.
Is that why your posts usually leave a "crappy" feeling with me?
Why no posts on it and why not a thread?
Because it seems to have an audience of .... one?
It's stashed in a drawer in my desk... Stylish maybe, worst "feel in the palm of one's hand", though.
.
Come on, put a sock on it , would you? OOPS, Did I just say that out loud? ... My bad.
