New G5 info (yes, a new one- it's hot!)
Just saw this on another site, figured I'd apss it along. Sounds great

anon: i got news on OS classic
anon: Classic.
anon: Well, the days of classic are limited. With OSX being primary startup..... However, look for the venerable OS 9.2.2 to have three more bigger revisions, 9.3, 9.4 and finally 9.5. Although development willstop after 9.3 which will add some additional functionality with itools and webdav, and communication, 9.4 and 9.5 will be polishing and hardware compatibility updates. Most intriguging is the concept that 9.4 and 9.5 will NOT be standalong OS. Meaning you can run classic 9.4 within OSX but NOT as its own boot. This makes for a faster experience and discards some legacy code and optimizes things a bit. Apple knows many peopel will need classic ability for another few years, but they also want to push migration of OSX, so by having a classic layer yet no separate boot support for the newer machines they solve both issues. The early builds of the OSX only classic layer are surprising with 'classic' app performamce exceeding current 9.2.2 .
anon: oh ya Apples making a digital audio program!
anon: its going to be for pros
anon: and work side by side with FCP
anon: OS X
anon: Where is it going.?
anon: 10.2 is looking like a Feb/Mar release. Most likely with the new G5 towers in Mar.
anon: Its still a housekeeping release. Speed, tweaks of interface, bug squashing, etc.
anon:
anon: But 10.3 onward is where new functionality and features show up. Look for an integrated ability to use the digital hub apps. More customizable abilities of the interface (within reason, NOT SKINS), USB 2.0 support, and better driver support and a few new things never seen on a Mac OS.
Stock. Apple has realized MacWorld only announcements don't help the financial quarters as they should. So rather than announce every six months, they want to announce every 2-3 months. This keeps Apple in the news, in press, and helps the bottom line by having a 'hot new' product every 2 to 3 months. Just the early adopters alone will boost profits for the given quarter. It makes financial sense.
nobody: we're all disgruntled apple employees!
anon: Dual processor will be an option with either 1.4 or 1.8 as a BTO option. The G5 is more complicated to make dual (beyond my technical knowledge to explain why). But its screams with dual processors.
you know running a dual G5 system is like running 8 G4's at once* 80 gigaflop/sec

This is either well thought out or the real thing. This was a conversation. I think it;s hard to pull this type of conversation off with specs, info, and everything else if you are making it up. The 2-3 month update sounds interesting as well and would explain the March rumors. Well, sounds good to me

<strong>If it sounds too good to be true...</strong><hr></blockquote>
Well, it doesn't sound that good. 2.0ghz dual G5s and I would agree with you. This is reasonable.
Besides, I need a new computer tomorrow.
Alex
The new iMacs have USB 1.1
<strong>Hmmm, yeah. 1.2ghz next gen chip, Superdrive, DDR, and Gigawire for $1699. "Not too good."</strong><hr></blockquote>
Not earth shattering when for $200 more you get an iMac/superdrive with a 15" LCD. THese are good specs, but not over the top good, as I said-reasonable.
<strong>Unfortunately, the fact that this person states that USB 1.0 will be on PowerMac G5's seriously damages his/her credulity with such matters.

I think its obvious that's what he/she meant. it's only logical to refer to 1.1 as 1 and usb 2 as 2.

Yes, but this person reported the USB version to two significant digits.

Did I miss something, or was there no info on the optical port later on? Other than that, this seems reasonable, but would be easy enough to guess...nothing new here.

Apple has always bundled stingy amounts of RAM with their systems. I doubt this will change. I don't think Apple will go for only two models, a high range and a low range. So what will be done with all those 1.0, 1.4, and 1.6 chips rumored? (It is possible that it's a typo and is really 1.6.) I think that if these two appear they will be accompined by a midline machine. Again, nothing is really new. Notice how there is nothing about a case redesign, which I'm sure would be necessary to hold stuff such as the new "Optical port," whatever that is.

Reasonable, except I don't think Apple will go to USB 2, at least not without having faster Firewire on the same machine.

G4? Yeah, right! I think this would require a redesign do to heat issues. Also, I again doubt USB2 without faster Firewire.

Wait a minute here! You just said that Tibook will be 867 max! I really doubt 1.8Ghz G4's exist. As for graphics, I don't think there's a mobile version of the 8500. As for USB, you said 2.0 before but now say 1.0. Would Apple put 2.0 on everything but the Tibook? I think not! Now about the battery....When the Tibook came out, I remember reading about how it used Lithium Polymer technology. I remember reading the same thing about the iPod. In other words, unless I am mistaken, they already use the same battery technology.

I doubt this, but don't know enough to argue it. Maybe start a thread in Future Software.

This makes sense. iMovie and iDVD have pro versions, iPhoto won't because of Photoshop, and this leaves iTunes as a candidate for a pro version.

Umm..didn't you say before that G5's were at 1.2 and 1.8 only?
In conclusion, this is BS, though mostly well thought BS. There is very little that hasn't been speculated on already.
<strong>
Not earth shattering when for $200 more you get an iMac/superdrive with a 15" LCD. THese are good specs, but not over the top good, as I said-reasonable.</strong><hr></blockquote>
yes, you get the 15" lcd, but you seem to be ignoring the rest of the specs when deciding on value. the bottom of the line g5 above has a processor that is 50% faster and has all the neat things that a g5 has to offer. According to the other rumors, which seem just as credible as this one, the g5 offers floating point execution that is more efficient than the g4 by up to a factor of 3. according to the last sentence, each g5 processor performs at right around 40 gigaflops, nearly 4 times the speed of the current dual 800. The ram is also at least twice as fast as the new Imac with a graphics card with twice as much RAM running at DDR-a gigantic improvement. the same superdrive and hard drive as the Imac.
It seems that if this system is released, the balance of sales may once again shift. instead of "who in their right mind would buy a power mac?", it would then be "who in their right mind would buy an Imac?"
Take the last release of power macs for example. they took the top of the line system, the 733 graphite, stripped it down, got rid of some cache, and halved the price. This time, they would be making their bottom of the line system perform at a much higher speed than the previous leader, the dual 800, adding more ram, and introuducing some new ports. while again halving the price.
The timing of the supposed release also makes me skeptical. The article claims that apple will be releasing these systems right around the time when their second imac hits the apple store. this seems like an odd time to release a system that is just as reasonably priced as the imac, but much faster, with new ram, and a graphics card that can perform close to 4 times better than the geforce2, just after the hyped MWSF.
when has either nvidia or ATI "ported" one of their graphics cards directly to a laptop, without any drawbacks? they have made versions of their existing cards for portables, but not with the same power.
last thing i noticed- if this hotline server really was for apple employees, why does this person seem to be explaining in detail to his fellow employees about the system. either they should already know about it or they don't know for a reason. if they're not supposed to know, then people like this would have spread these specs all over the place by now. However, this is the first time i've seen these specs.
of course...after saying all this, i'd love to be proven wrong..
