Pretty pathetic attempt at ratings to air a 2 year old show...

But Apple is a hype machine and CNBC needs ratings

I posted it hoping that a few here would take the opportunity to learn something about Apple. As well, this is only one in a series culminating with their latest presentation on Apps.

For those interested, this week CNBC has scheduled

What $1000 price point? Read it again.

    >>I think that's a big part of it, in addition, I think it's likely Steve has been burned before on parts supplies -- as some of the other Big Fab companies, can lock up critical components with a bid -- even if they don't buy. Apple isn't like Dell, in that they can use part A or B -- they usually are designed for specific components.

With the INTEL platform, they've become a bit more flexible. But you'll notice that Apple gets state-of-the-art INTEL chips, and is usually the first out with some of their new platforms -- that's because they are at the forefront of Computer builders who test and use new designs first. Likely, USB 3.0 will appear on a Mac before most other of the main PC manufacturers.

So with the iPhones, iPods and Books -- they have to get a reserve of parts, when they are the main buyer of that specific type of part, and sometimes the number of iPhones and Books are dependent on the supply of one or two parts.

Letting other companies know what they are doing ahead of time, can mean that they will have to wait for restocking of a cutting edge component. It's definitely happened with flash-ram before.

The vanilla PC manufacturers are rushing to bring out these tablets. The $200 tablet announced is a "reference design." Meaning -- they INTEND to design it at that price point. But it could change as it is being built.

    Prepare to be Underwhelmed!

The other tablets are likely to just be keyboard-less Netbooks with a few better touch screen controls and a virtual keyboard. The REASON, I think that Tablets before failed, is that they'd be REALLY, REALLY cool if you could use them like in Star Trek, and one hand holds while the other hand does useful things -- hopefully with some swooshy strokes that recaptures your comrade from the transporter buffer.

Apple has a number of patents that might come into play; 3D detection of hand and intent over a screen. 3D interface (even on a 2D screen) that can shift windows based on the position of a users head (or hand) and the Camera is doing facial recognition. If your computer is stationary, it can use the PhotoBooth trick of grabbing a static image of the background and alpha-masking YOU from the difference with that static image. There is even a patent on taking the environment from the camera, and reflection-mapping onto shiny objects on screen.... NOW HOW MUCH WOULD YOU PAY? -- but wait,

    not done yet,...

The 3D hand thingy is pretty "minority report-like" -- which is probably going to be a word adopted by our trendy Dictionaries any day now. So interfacing with those virtual keyboards -- well, you might have a lot of command macros as well -- THINK SIGN LANGUAGE. Right, computer knows your pinky from your thumb because it's using Facial -- or maybe Handial-recognition.

I don't know if THIS tablet will have these features -- but I'm pretty sure that this is the direction.

The MAIN THING is, on top of the other MAIN THINGS I've mentioned -- is that it is a hybrid of the iPhone/Touch and a MacBook. So all those apps on the app store will run full screen mode -- and the buttons will be HUGE! Of course, I'm guessing they will have an auto-format magic thingy to make to look good without too much new coding (no platform divergence -- that's for the Android and it's soon to be cursed by splinters development mess).

    >> But the MAIN, MAIN thing that will make this Tablet stand out, will be,... and you will be at first underwhelmed and then overwhelmed; iTunes Extras!

HTML5 goodness and templates to make Album covers on iTunes? Please

    don't mock me bro!

You see, Steve Jobs has been talking to movie, TV and newspaper providers. There is scuttlebutt about a $30 monthly subscription. So you might pay $5 a year for a newspaper that updates in iTunes and has Harry Potter moving his head just like in the movies! And you might get all your crappy cable shows and series on this instead of the cable box that DOES NOT move in your briefcase -- or wirelessly stream to an AppleTV or other device.

So, will these other Tablets have the next Digital Wave of entertainment and support ACTUAL reporters?

If Jobs does this -- I think it will be bigger than the iPod, the iPhone and Godzilla's jock strap.

If he doesn't do this -- then I'm going to go patent my crazy ideas and be RICH!

A tablet that comes with a decent size screen and low enough power consumption to last a full day may be a good vehicle to replace paper newspaper and magazine subscriptions with electronic forms. It also has to be light enough to be more practical than a notebook, almost like the new larger size Kindle...

So something like the iTablet/iSlate where it's a closed device and can subscribe to PDF versions of the WSJ would be welcome in their eyes.

I wouldn't mind getting the WSJ, just I don't like getting my hands dirty with ink and should be getting a discount for PDF as it saves labor/paper/printing.

It's going to be a tough sell, getting users to pay for content again.

No AdBlock for the iSlate though!

And Steve Jobs is wrong, people DO READ, it's just they like to read on computers rather than on books and newspapers.

People like to be able to set the type size and fonts, auto load their favorite information and so on.

Probably not. A tablet, particularly an iTablet or whatever it will be called from Apple is the ultimate niche "I have more money than you to spend on electronic toys with less utility than a normal computer" product.

Reference for the $1000 price point.

So it's good to hear that at least some of the rumored features might be delivered, but that $1000 price seems a bit high. Not high as in we think it's wrong, high as in cost-prohibitive-MacBook-Air-style high.

An infra red output would make this devise perfect in my opinion. Universal remote capabilities over both IR and WiFi would mean you could control most of your house with it.

I'm in no way expecting IR and I would be very surprised if it had it, but in my dream scenario, it would have it and Logitech (or someone similar) would create a remote app for it!

Absolutely on the button I reckon! When I saw iTunes extras I thought this too. If you look back at the way Apple introduces concepts and interfaces they often trial things in one place before bringing it out elsewhere with enhanced functionality. As soon as I thought about the iSlate, or whatever it is, and read all this talk of magazine linkups, then looked at iTunes LP and stuff it all seems to make sense as a new way of delivering multimedia content.

    Enough speculation already ...
