If they don't come today, then Apollo? (Powermac upgrade, or lack thereof)

Hey, I love Ambrosia's stuff (hurry up with EV Nova!), but by no means(no offense Andrew) do they pull as much weight as Adobe, MS, Macromedia, Corel, etc. These are the kind of companies that Apple would probably be seeding test G5 boxes too and giving them briefings on progress.

Now Moki, if you have some inside source, or a friend at Apple, I can see how that may influence you, but he'd have to be a pretty close friend to break his NDA. Breaking NDA if you're a systems engineer on the Apple campus is like pulling a Bruce Willis in Die Hard 3 and walkin around naked in Harlem with a sign on that says "I hate n*ggers."

I don't mean that Ambrosia isn't important, I'm just saying that if the G5 is compatible with all current apps, then Apple has no reason to brief Ambrosia about the project.

Apple is much more likely to worry about optimization in key apps for the new CPU, like Photoshop, Light Wave, etc . From everything we've heard about the G5, compatibility shouldn't be a problem.

How can Feb be too soon tho, Moto was talking about the G5 and even the G6 back in '99. Every early article said 2 years from then, making it a Q1 '02 release. That's why I don't believe those who say 'not this year'

And I'm sorry, but the fact that you are president of Ambrosia Software does not make you any more credible in my eyes.

That's fine, you're welcome to believe as you will. As I have said before, I'm perfectly willing to let history be the judge on these matters.

If you think Apple will introduce a G5 in February, though, you are smoking some serious crack -- and history will show that too.

Here we go again, people accusing other's of doing drugs at AI. Why has this become the standard insult to anyone who's optimistic about Apple's future hardware?

    You're smokin' CRACK!

    You must be smokin' somethin'!

    You're on crack!

    Must be the crack!

Have any of you even SEEN crack? Not on TV, but in person? What about a crackhead? I dunno, maybe I'm being overly sensitive, but I used to work in a shelter and lots of the people that came through were crack users, and after seeing what it did to them I just don't see any humor in calling someone a crackhead. The reality of crack is is just so sad and painful.

I've seen both crack and crackheads, JD, and I agree-- they're nowhere near as funny as heroin addicts.

I had two female art student metalhead heroin addicts for roommates one year...and one was an illegal Canadian immigrant.

    Now THAT'S comedy!

ObG5: The speed of the chip is secondary to the speed of the supporting hardware, IMO. Apple needs to generally upgrade throughput all over their MB before stressing about 1.4 Ghz G5s... the current chips are starved for input as it is.

It was really interesting to me that when Apple increased bus speed in their last rev by 33%, overall performance went up...by about 33%

It wasn't an insult, it was an expression -- and it was meant as a humorous one. Yes, you are being too sensitive -- it wasn't meant any more literally than any other colloqial expression.

And yes, I have seen both crack and people strung out on crack up close and personal on numerous occasions.

This is really rather ridiculous, but if you'd like a nicely sanitized, PC version of what I said, I shall revise it. I can't call you "crazy" for thinking there will be a G5 in Feb. because then I'll be under-sensitive to the mentally challenged (and yes, I've seen that up close as well). How exactly can I put this without offending any hyper-sensitive politically correct doctrine?

    Here we go --

"I do not think you will see G5s in February -- those who are 'in the loop' on the processor have no reason to believe you'll be seeing it in production Macs any time in the next 6 months at the *earliest*

Continuing to harp on about the G5 is just going to set everyone up for a disappointment. "

Im sure I read last week that MOTO's 0.13micron SOI process doesn't come online until August. That in itself explains why Apollo's are going to be 0.18 SOI instead of 0.13 (as previously expected), It also means NO G5. Unless its a 0.18 G5, which won't be the G5 were expecting. Anyone else read this news?

Actually, according to Motorola's press releases 0.13µ(re: HiP7) has been used to manufacture embedded cores since @ least 4/9/2001. See Below:

[QUOTE]Motorola Inc. (ticker: MOT, exchange: New York Stock Exchange) News Release - 9-Apr-2001

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Motorola's 'HiP7' Ushers in Launch of Full System-on-Chip Development Environment for Tomorrow's 'Smarter' Products

[quote]Motorola is currently running embedded microprocessor cores on this advanced 0.13 micron process. Production is expected to begin in second quarter of this year in MOS13, Motorola's most advanced 8-inch facility in Austin, Texas.

Apparently, HiP7 does not refer to SOI, but they have been using the 0.13µ process since 4/9/2001. If Motorola's press releases are to be believed
