I don't see how this is a mistake or a deal breaker. If your point is to use it for a camera, then you have a camera bag and a cable, likely USB-B-to-USB-A. Just leave it in your camera bag until it's needed. You can even fasten it there permanently if grabbing two thing from the same place is really a pet peeve.
I'm all for the 30-pin adapter. I can't think of another company that has stayed with the same connector across so many devices for as long as Apple. How many years and how many iDevices has it been now?
Remember, this is an accessory device, not a PC replacement so I have to think that making the whole thing thicker to appeal to less people is a less sound marketing strategy than making an adapter that only a few will ever need and even less with be upset by.

It depends on the camera. For a Nikon D3x, raw files are roughly 36MB, approximately 1800 photos. I don't have that camera, but that's the current worst case scenario, short of going medium format. That's a 24MP camera with 14 bit file depth, for anything smaller, scale down the file size appropriately.
Given that Apple is going to offer a camera adapter kit, I would assume that the device would offer the ability to grab files from the camera. Whether non-Apple software can do it is an open question.

BTW, You don't even need the Apple adapter set. The iPad comes with the iPod-Dock-Connector-to-USB-A cable, so all you need is an coupler or cable that is USB-A-female-to-USB-A-female.

Gates never developed anything of his own. He merely copied ideas whenever he sees them. MSDOS was simply photocopied from PCDOS (IBM??). Windows was almost photocopied from Mac OS. Windows 2.0 was written for Page Maker - and incidentally copied to Windows. "Copy" is the first word in Gate's vocabulary.
SJ is a sincere perfectionist. He is the first hand user of any product that apple develops. He enjoys perfecting it - and reaps the benefit for Apple.
How many sensible CEOs will hand over a company to clowns like Balmer (who just happened to be Gate's friend) without worrying about the future of Microsoft. Can you tell me what Balmer has achieved in his career in Micro$oft except for his monkey dance in the launch sessions?
