If you traveled, you would buy a travel alarm. The iPhone is great for that too.

There are also sound systems that use the iPhone for the heart of the system. They turn it into a great quality radio alarm clock, but with your own music if you wan it that way.

Yep, a radio/clock/dock is an excellent combination.

I love having my iPhone charging and ready to display caller info from the nightstand. No need to pick the phone up to check who is calling or what time it is. Just roll over and glance at it. Using it in such a manner, i've found that I never forget to plug it in. Also, it's harder to knock the phone off the nightstand when it is docked on something that large.

The iPad could be used similarly, but users aren't less likely to have the iPad with them when getting undressed at night. Instead, it wouldn't be unlikely for it to be sitting downstairs on the coffee table. This can happen with a phone too. But it is far more common for a non-pocketable device like an iPad.

Thus, it is my prediction that the iPad will be less popular as an alarm clock than the iphone. When you really have to make it to work in the morning, it is preferable to use an alarm clock that is less likely to have been forgotten in the bathroom the previous night.

(Incidentally, don't get me started on the JBL On-Time 400iHD iPod dock/clock/radio that I own. Imagine how pissed I was when JBL finally admitted that their weekday vs weekend alarm functionality didn't work. This is after having sent in one defective unit only to discover the replacement had the same problem. Apparently, JBL is shipping an alarm clock that sets off alarms on the wrong day. Yep, according to JBL, Sunday is a weekday. Every single one of this particular model number has the problem and they don't plan to fix it. Solution, use both the built-in alarm and the iPhone alarm on weekdays but only the iphone on weekends. Redundant alarms... ahhh, i'm such a slave to the system and punctuality.)
