There is no way they would have coffee in a public place, outdoors no less, by accident. They knew people would see and probably even take a picture or two.
Whatever the reason why, we can let the conspiracy theorists discuss that, this event was done on purpose to make it seem like the companies are on better terms than recently described in the press.
Historically speaking, traveling in America has always been a right. Technically NONE of us should have tags on our cars. Unfortunately most Americans see coercion as law and recognize unconstitutional acts as binding.
Yeah, and there's no right to a taxpayer-funded paved highway either.
I'll bet you long for the horse and buggy-whip days, when average life expectancy was 50......
Hey, even if this actually is just a "staged event," then it's one heck of a PR stunt. Steve looks 100% like Steve, Eric looks 100% like Eric -- no mistaking either of 'em. And they're having drinks on a sidewalk in a shopping center, just like "normal" people! (Steve would do most of the talking, anyway. ) The placement's conspicuous enough to draw attention (for anyone who's really looking), but it still provides an easy avenue of escape.
Those seats don't look terribly comfy, however, so I probably would bolt, too.
The truth here is that the two companies are at the very pinnacle of their respective focus fields, despite attempts at overlap; the sooner the two sides "kiss and make up," the better for everyone. They may not have to like each other, but they can do much more good all around by working well together.
(I don't care what anyone says, I love Steve's "sense of fashion": he looks to be comfortable, and that's all that ever matters. And he's bloody consistent about it!)

I suspect you be right. Even if they were just stopping by for coffee they would sit inside unless they specifically wanted to be spotted. Good way to do it, though. No need to face the press or issue a statement. All they need to do is have a coffee. The press / bloggers will take care of the rest whilst adding a tad of mystique and free marketing.

Ouch-ee mama! Sense of fashion are not the words I would choose. He is consistent, that's for sure. He really ought to update his jeans to a more contemporary cut and please, loose those shoes. No need for a Gucci make over but he is looking old. As for Eric, the less said the better. Not that I care much, personally, but you brought it up.
Heh.... I guess this is why Celebs love NYC so much... We don't give a crap who's on the street, if they're in my way their gonna get some full contact elbow treatment!
Not a lie either... I worked in a hospital area of NYC and Gene Wilder was just sitting there on the trunk of a limo and nobody even skipped a beat and the limo was on the corner right next to the neighborhood dirty water dog vendor and he had more people hanging out next to him that Gene did...
Nothing like NYC... but working there 20 years tends to turn you off from the place... \
Jobs was overheard by the photographer as saying two things: "They're going to see it all eventually, so who cares how they get it," reportedly said about Web content.
I bet Steve was talking to schmidt about the recent Google China debacle. The chinese are going to see content eventually, no matter what... so really, who cares if google provides it or not.
"This year we've put together a great series of gatherings focused on developer education and community. In addition to continuing our series of Google Developer Days around the world, we're bringing back Google I/O, a 2-day deep dive on web application development using Google developer products and open technologies."
WWDC 2010 is 5 weeks later on June 28th.
An HTML 5 IDE that allows WYSIWYG development would be incredible but certainly would have to be open to gain traction. If they could define layout using XML like they do in Interface Builder, it would be the start to an end of cross-browser checking.
Microsoft would probably even be on board with it as they use XAML in Silverlight. People shouldn't have to write CSS and HTML code by hand and tweak layouts pixel by pixel by changing text, saving and reloading.
UI toolkits like Interface Builder and Qt are common for RAD in desktop apps but we still do manual layout for web. The problem with the web is down to control of course - you can't establish a standard if IE doesn't support it. Google need to use their power more in a way that is evil but for the greater good. Block IE from Youtube and force people to use a webkit browser or Firefox, then establish a better standard for the web and make Microsoft follow it.
Google is in the smart phone market only to keep Microsoft out.
Microsoft has been in the smart phone market a lot longer than either Google or Apple, but their inability to design and market a decent mobile phone OS has kept their market share low.
Google can't be in the market to keep a non-factor out. It's more likely they saw how quickly the iPhone made everything WinMo look pathetic and, smelling blood, decided to squash their competitors from Redmond while they had the chance.

The main thing is Google isn't going to back HTC's play, where Microsoft would.
Google rather have a friend with Apple than HTC anyway, but will take HTC's money.

Well it could be, but likely that they were just trying to lead normal lives just like everyone else.
Having been around famous people, a lot try to do just that.
Look at Schmidt's body posture at the first picture - he looks like a subordinate talking to his boss. Very subdued / submissive. The posture of his legs & feet is even more forth telling - looks like an obedient soldier; "Ten-Hut!"
In the second picture he is more relaxed though.
If this is a truce meeting, then something is cooking.
Has it been blanked out for some reason or does he really somehow drive it around like that and collect fines every day?
It's probably a new car. Takes a month or so for the DMV to send them, and you don't even need to put them on the car right away if you display the temporary registration in the windshield.

Ok, lets be clear, this was staged.

I'm a-keepin' that photo.
No silver edges. Bottom corner (near Eric) is square, not rounded.
Probably in the folding carrying case, which is all black.

Who knew geeks have paparazzi too?
Just some guy who reads Giz.

Sounds like a product or development either of them could introduce but both benefit from. Google has a developer event on May 19-20:

Eric stole it while Jobs was getting the coffee.

Yea Eric needed it because he got a DUI last night and had his plate taken by the cops.

If you were Steve Jobs, would you own an old car?
People keep stealing his license plate, so the State issued him a bar code instead.
If you zoom in, you'll see it a bit. Right where the plate should be.
Nah, that's the VIN.
All Mercedes-Benzes (at least the ones manufactured in the past twenty years) have a VIN at that spot.
It's a nice urban legend though.
