Steve reached out to Eric. The conversation went something like this. "I didn't say all those nasty things the media is reporting(he did). Let's get together for coffee to show that this thing has been blown out of proportion." Steve wants to keep Google close.

The Palo Alto police know Jobs plates get stolen all the time so they don't give him any trouble about not having pates. The barcode has nothing to do with his license plates. It is a Mercedes Benz tracking #.

Jobs is not wearing black socks. The "turtle neck" is actually a full body unitard much like an adult onesie. Little known fact.

Great post. There is just so much to see and do in this one!

Well, something is going on because they obviously *knew* they'd be seen in public, and perhaps even *wanted* to be seen in public. An obvious observation, sure, but it speaks volumes.

Perhaps there was never any real rivalry to begin with.

Or maybe Eric begged Steve to please, please, please be his friend again since he's made to feel so lonely at Google.

Or maybe Eric insisted it be in public, so that Steve wouldn't start yelling at him and calling him all sorts of foul names.

Google is in the smart phone market only to keep Microsoft out.

Forgetting about Occam's razor, maybe this rivalry is a deep and creatively staged and coordinated megastunt to confuse Microsoft and Nokia. Keep them off balance while Apple and Google push ahead to share 90% of the mobile device and services market.

    Then again, maybe not.

If you were Steve Jobs, would you own an old car?

When he owned an old house, he asked to demolish it.

Traveling is a right. You have a right to use the sidewalk as a pedestrian. That right has not been revoked.

However, the democratic government that citizens elected have decided that in order to best utilize public resources for a larger majority of people, yet maintain order, the governments have set up local regulations concerning the use of public roads, their upkeep, use thereof, et cetera ad nauseam.

Driving on a public road is a privilege, not a right. Never, ever forget that. The reason why there are traffic laws is so that chaos doesn't rapid ensue, resulting in injury and death to drivers, passengers, innocent bystanders, pedestrians, etc.

At least here in California, you don't have to register a car if it is exclusively driven on private property.

Note that as a citizen, you must still abide by the laws as a pedestrian. Which means if the light is red, don't cross. The electorate has decided that it is in the greater interest of all people using that road that you should wait for a green light. If you feel that you were right to cross on a red, go talk to the judge when you argue your jaywalking ticket. If the circumstances were right and you are convincing, he/she might dismiss the ticket.

Frankly, if I were a media mogul, I'd be scared sh_tless to see these two guys together.

One guy runs the world's largest downloadable digital media and games retail store in the world. The other guy runs the world's largest Internet advertising service and has the top streaming video service on the planet.

    But that's just me...

ES: I'm your older brother, Steve, and I was stepped over!

SJ: That's the way Pop wanted it.

ES: It ain't the way I wanted it! I can handle things! I'm smart! Not like everybody says... like dumb... I'm smart and I want respect! I have my own smartphone now!

SJ: You sat on the board, and took our ideas. I know it was you, Eric. You broke my heart. You broke my heart!

As I mentioned earlier, the barcode is the VIN.

All Mercedes-Benzes have them in that spot. (Well, at least all that have been manufactured in the past twenty years or so.)

Ahh thanks for that. It didn't add up to me earlier, because VINs are built on the manufacturer, not issued by the State.

Still doesn't explain quite how he gets away with it though!

Explained earlier. It's a new car. Plates not required until supplied by the DMV.

I do believe this car and this model is a couple of years old now. It only takes a couple of days to supply a plate and it was certainly photographed last year sometime without.

I'm no expert in Mercedes cars (the newest one I ever owned was a 1960 model), but I do know that the SL-55 AMG is still made. Would Steve Jobs drive an old model? I don't think so.

I'm guessing you're not from California. We see cars with no plates every day. It takes several weeks to get them from the California DMV, during which time it is perfectly legal to drive with the temporary registration papers in the windshield. They're valid for a couple of months, IIRC.

It's actually a bigger problem to drive a car with a rear plate and no front plate. That's not legal in California.

If it is about web content, then there must be a secret project going on...

Me think Jobs is trying to persuade Google to join their anti-Flash crusade...

I'm no expert in such matters, but that shadow on the Mercedes looks to me as though it's been Photoshopped on. And if that photo is a fake, then the Jobs/Schmidt ones are bound to be fakes as well.

    Join?!?!

Hasn't Google already done that with tier HTML5-ifying of the youtube video content (still in beta iirc)? Sure seems like a pretty aggressive move in its own right and I don't think Google makes any 'appreciable' use of FLASH anywhere else on their properties. (I could be wrong tho - I've been surfing flash free for quite some time).

Yes I'm definitely not from around there. Thanks for the update on the rest too.

That photo is a fake. Note that Stevie is wearing the same clothes he was wearing in photos taken a year ago, as well as photos taken several years ago.

Steve Jobs died several months ago of cancer in a mountain cave just over the border in Pakistan.
