this is really very very disgusting...I tried some applications but none of them was able to do a simple thing like saving so I can read it offline...specially PDF's ......
I'm confused. You can do this. iBooks is free. You have no right to complain.
I have a PDF open in Safari, and also have iBooks installed, but I cannot get this PDF into iBooks for later reading.
I am sure there is some simple "Apple Experience" that I am lacking - something so simple that I am just not getting it. But that said, I am not getting it. I have been going bonkers "tabbing" on the title bar.

iPad: The fact that I can't save PDF files from safari is a deal breaker
I had similar issue on my nephew's iTouch...he tried to use the Dropbox app to download files to his device but the app wouldnt let him. He can stream stuff from his dropbox account, but cannot save it to the device.
I thought it was a settings issue, but it looks like a deliberate limitation.

Have iBooks on your device. Go to absolutely any PDF. Tap it. You'll get that black bar.
It is kinda odd that Safari would not have native PDF support. PDF is a pretty major format.
I dont know if desktop browsers support it, but the Android browser displays and downloads PDFs natively.
why can't people read threads properly before posting in them?
Safari on iOS does support PDFs; there's even a screen-shot of a PDF loaded in iOS Safari in the post immediately above yours.
What some people seem to have found confusing is whether or not you can save (for later viewing and/or transfer back to your computer) PDFs viewed with iOS Safari. The answer is that you can: you load the PDF in Safari, then load the PDF into iBooks (again, see the screenshot in the post immediately above yours).

On the iPad anyways you can "Favourite" something in DropBox and it will save it for offline use.
I learned the other day at the Apple store that I can't save PDF files from safari. My work requires the reading of PDF files (academic journals). Why does a tablet, which is perfect for reading text, not support the saving of PDf files? To be clear, I know I can read pdf files in safari, but I cannot save them to the home screen. The fact that I can save a link is moronic. Links to journals don't work. You have to save the file. What's wrong with apple? Why can't you save (at least certain) content using safari? Apple really screwed up on this one. No professional academic will buy an iPad without this feature (at least not for work).
For those of you who bought an iPad, enjoy your oversized iPhone.
I'll stick to my MacBook Pro.

PDF apps don't work on many websites because of "unsupported browser" issues. Apple's upcoming iOS 5 would do well to integrate PDF writing into Safari. Would go a long way to making the iPad more business friendly.
If you install dropbox you have an option to open the PDF you are viewing in safari there. It will be saved and synced to any other devices you have installed dropbox on - mac, pc, phone etc. Very cool
I have a slightly different take on this. I want to print any old webpage AS a pdf, not save pdfs from the web. Its how I save a lot of forms I've filled out, reciepts, password questions etc. i've usually used something like the virtual printer CutePDF. You hit print page, the Cute printer shows up and you create a new pdf document of the webpage. What i want is for Safari to show me the virtual printer apps I've installed when I hit the "Select Printer" button. Not to look for wireless printers in the area.
Use Dolphin HD, it's a good browser and there is a Web To PDF plugin. I hear your complaints, it frustrates me to know end the amount of things missing on iOS and the iPad hardware. However there are also a lot of great things about the iPad to, namely the applications. You can find a work around for pretty much any problem your having. I would first defiantly Jail Break the thing as without it the iPad would have made me looney a long time ago.
If you still can't find satisfaction well there is always a Android tablet where saving a web page is very simple to do but you will have to make do with their ecosystem, which isn't as refined as Apples. However you'll find things like your SD card, and none of those OS restrictions Apple imposes. Choose your poison or do what I did live in both worlds.

Or via iBooks, as mentioned before. Why is anyone still complaining about this, much less calling it "disgusting"?
Because we're bored?

Anybody have a solution for this?
