It helps. I try to make sure what I buy helps my productivity in some way.

It's called PrintCentral. Yes, it costs, $9.99. They have simpler, cheaper versions as well. But this really works well.

But it's not DIRECT printing, is it? Isn't it going through your computer?

The only (iPad) app I know of that boasts direct printing is Fax Print & Share, and judging from the 21 one star reviews (out of 21 reviews), it does not work.

Someone explain to me when anyone would need to print from the iPad, when a printer is present, that a computer is not?

This is a purely fictional scenario.

The only printing I ever do is from my Mac to my printer. Period. If I type something up on my iPad there are a multitude of easy ways including wireless that get the file onto my Mac for printing.

What you all want is someway to print to any printer, wirelessly, when no computer is present, which is an unimaginable scenario, and unrealistic for the majority of printers out there.

What a disappointment it was to discover Numbers and Keynote for iPad can only export files as a PDF or in the native Numbers or Keynote format. Such is not the case in the iMac version of those products. The Pages app for iPad offers the ability to export files in a Word format.

For those of us who planned to use the iPad as a business tool, dumbing-down the export feature is a real turn-off and really restricts serious business use of these apps.

It may be a mistake that limits iPad sales in a world where talking back and forth in Excel and PowerPoint has become the standard.

As an iPad owner and an Apple share-holder, I sure hope that Apple techies are working on updates to fix this deficiency - quickly.

It seems to me that people are forgetting that this isa first generation device, with a first generation OS update. The same thing is true for the programs offered. The fact that there are a number of third party programs available that allow sharing files, network printing wirelessly or wired, even over 3G, shows that this is easily done.

This sounds like the situation when the iPhone first came out, and look at where it is now.

I think we should wait until tomorrow to see what 4.0 offers before we get too involved in what is offered now.

So? If you're going to want to move files from your computer to the iPad and visa versa, as so many here want to do, you're going to need the network connection anyway. It uses WiFi, wired connections, and even 3G.

There's no reason that I can see so far that says that it can't print directly. Hp has had a program out for quite a while for the iPhone/Touch that allows printing directly to any of their printers that have wiFi built-in. I imagine this program will do that as well, though all my printers are network connected so I can't try it myself.

I also see no reason why printing to a USB equipped device isn't possible. Someone just has to write an app for that.

    Why is that unimaginable?

For example, I expect that I'll use my iPad for at least 90% of my home browsing - and only turn my main computer on occasionally. Why should I have to turn it on to print? All of my printers are networked and the main one has wireless.

Or perhaps someone has an iPad which they use when traveling. When they want to print something, it would be a lot more convenient to go to the hotel business center and print than messing around with gaining access to the business center's computers and installing whatever software you need to transfer the iPad file to the printer.

I can picture lots of times when printing directly from the iPad would be useful. Maybe you just have a limited imagination.

I want Bezier curve drawing and shape masking in Pages... There is a Bezier app on the iPhone, so it can be done!

    We might get that.

With all the desires being stated here, on this very new device, people seem to be forgetting that it is a very new device. It's been out all of5 days, and most apps were written, and distributed without the developers even had one in their hands.

Geez, people, give it some time!

I agree with that... There are a lot of voids and things that need to be fleshed out. I suspect that the iWork apps are "markers" to signal the potential uses of the device, and stake out a minum territory.

I also expect some of the iLife capabilities to be available in the iPad.

Apple may be waiting for some of the OS capabilities that will be announced tomorrow.

It will be interesting to see if there is potential to use the iPad as a tablet accessory to a Mac...

... Oh, I just snuck in another one

You could always make this one and the next large image a link so you don't have to go to the trouble of resizing them.

A lot of us would like to use it for that. In fact, when I told my daughter, the photography major, that Apple was coming out with a tablet, that's exactly what she thought I meant.

Yeah, I can envision sitting on the couch, iPad in lap, WiFi connected to the new Mac Mini, running PS or a new Motion... And using the large screen HDTV as a display.

It probably can be done. There are apps for using this as a controller, or remote. A new app lets you use a 3GS as a wireless camera for the iPad. I'm sure all sorts of things will be coming out.
