I don't think that either one is basic or required.

I do, however, think that they make Android devices stand out as being better, for lots of folks, than the iPhone OS devices.

    YMMV.

    How about system-wide voice input?

I am still waiting to hear the "miles" that Android has covered ahead of apple or the applications that run "extremely well" on it and are not available to the iphone, in concrete terms, to justify this tired fanfare. Might you be referring to the android ui and the nexus one looking like shit?

The 3G may be two years old, but it's still a current model, you can still buy them brand new from Apple. To drop support for a current model is pretty unusual, and also given how a jail broken 3G can multi-task, inexcusable.

As for how Android is ahead, try using a Nexus One. A few things which stand out to me - Much higher res screen, true multi-tasking, proper GMail support, voice recognition in all system apps, turn by turn built in, unlocked marketplace, new Google Apps such as Google Voice and Google Listen, and widget support. Just a few off the top of my head, I'm sure there are more.

Shocked at how many people on this thread have misunderstood so many of the 4.0 features, especially the Ads. Please, pay a little attention and use your brain when reading the news.

OS 4.0 is still behind Android in several key areas, chiefly true multi-tasking, GMail support, voice control through all system apps, and built in turn by turn.

There was also no mention made today of increasing the resolution of the iPhone's screen, which is another area where Android has a huge lead.

True multasking: i.e. leaving a couple of apps running in the background to calculate complex math equations while you place a phone, and running the battery out in minutes.

Gmail support: it's damn google os, they better have gmail support on it... anyway I don't see how the iphone doesn't support gmail...but then how could I...

voice control: that has got to be one of the most moronic features, to be implemented system wise, as if anyone would rather talk to their phone as if it were a pet or a spouse or a friend. Surely, one of the most gimmicky "features"... I am not saying someone can't like it, or even use it frequently under some scenario, accessibility maybe, but it's hardly something that one can say is missing.

turn by turn: lots of apps in the iphone for it that do a much better job too. Yeah, you have to pay for them, so what?

Face it guys, there're some clang clang sounds sounding today, and it's the nails on android's coffin... even a slight geeky edge it might have had with google slapping on every feature they could come up with has gone up in thin air.

Hmm, well would be nice probably.

Would be nice too. But hey, it's still a few months until 4.0 ...

This was a software event, not a hardware event. If you know Apple, you'd know that they wouldn't tell us anything today that would give us a hint about new hardware features ...

True multi-tasking means just that, proper full fat multi-tasking. I'd like to be able to run anything in the background and have it actually run, not sit frozen. How about an IM client or a twitter client? Or an RSS feed, or anything which constantly pulls new data over the net. None of those will run in the background on OS 4.0.

The GMail support on the iPhone is incredibly basic. It's barely worth mentioning it's so awful. See how it behaves on Android and you will see what I mean.

After being so far ahead when launching the iPhone (in terms of OS functonality and sophistication) it puzzles me why they are so incredibly cautious now. Why is Steve seemingly so happy to let Android pull further and further ahead? Considering how much he apparently hates all things Google, I would have thought he would want to get ahead again. Or is he just happy with his truck loads of money now?

I really don't think a Twitter app would flatten the battery. It would certainly use less data than Pandora or Last FM, which Steve supports and so presumably uses himself/likes.

GMail on the iPhone is very unimpressive. No push (not without hacking about with Exchange servers), no threaded conversations, no search, no flags, no ability to mark as spam, no plug-ins etc. It's bare bones in the extreme.

Voice control works great on the Nexus One. Maybe you should try it before attacking it.

I am not the topic of this thread. Your post is a direct attack, against the rules, and off-topic.

Most of what you say is factually incorrect, and to the extent you are expressing opinions, they have no basis.

Yes, I realize that. That's why I said "basically" the same. They are all so similar that they need scrutiny to distinguish them. The whole point of an icon is the exact opposite: to be instantly recognizable.

IMO, Apple's implementation is pretty bad, especially compared to the already-existing implementations available for the iPhone.

Nope, not an Android user. I have a 3GS.

But I now think that I will get a Nexus One and sell the iPhone on eBay.

Agreed, will all computers running Win 7 or Snow Leopard be dropped in two years? My five year old White iMac runs Win 7, along with SNow Leopard, that is called legacy support. Anyone who has seen multi-tasking on a jailbroken iPhone knows that the 3G can handle it with no problems. This is just about shunting people up the ladder for a new device.

Were you not all shouting the odds about not needing multi-tasking? Now it's great again?

10 features from Android - not having to use iTunes to take a shit. Or delete a single bloody song. Or being able to plug my phone into someone else's computer. you get the picture.

Nice list. I'm thinking of getting a Nexus One. Have you used one extensively? Any thoughts? I now have a 3GS, but with nothing compelling in the pipeline for the 3GS, I'm thinking seriously of switching.

I am sure a lot of people here would pay you more than what the current model sells at the apple store, just to take that 3GS off your hands and have you post at the google forums instead. Heck you could do a google wave to each other in the google forums, imagine that!!!

And you are welcome to come back occasionally and give us some new rumor about apple's plans, I 've been hearing former apple board member have been taking pretty good notes in the board meetings.

Downloaded apps? Sorry, I'm not locked into Apple. Just ATT.

I only bought one app. It was crap. I only download free ones now.
