Why does everything have to be so graphic? Why can't Nintendo say that they see Apple as their next big competitor? Why enemy? Will there be bloodshed? I guess this is that whole Apple product "killer" nonsense that's always going around. Every blogger/journalist seems to be looking for an iPhone-killer or iPod-killer, or iPad-killer, or some other "killer" product to put that upstart Apple in their place.
"Enemy of the future." Go back in time, find baby Samsung iPhone/iPod Touch CPU, and destroy it!

Nintendo's confidence about have vanquished Sony is supported by the fact that its Wii outsold the PlayStation 3 by nearly double over the last holiday season, but Wii sales have also been falling off. In the first quarter, Nintendo reported sales down 21% from the year ago quarter.
Similarly, while Nintendo's DS remains the best selling handheld games machine, its position is now being encroached upon by Apple's iPhone and iPod touch platform.
Nintendo has recently focused its attention on broadening the market for video games outside of youths and dedicated male gamers. It famously and successfully positioned the Wii as a game console for entire families, girls, and older people.
However, Nintendo's expanded gamer demographics of high school girls and men 30-40 now say they'd rather have an iPhone than carry a DS, according to the report.
The relatively high prices of traditional console games also took a beating during the economic downturn, shifting the attention of many gamers toward Apple's iTunes App Store, where there are thousands of free games and most paid titles are less than $10.
At this point, everyone should view Apple as an enemy. Suing their own customers, abusing laws to censor criticism, sending special agents to search people's homes? What's next? They're like the Chinese Communist Party of computing. Control, control, control.
They never asked me, but if they did, one of the biggest things they could do to increase profits is fix that lousy excuse for manufacturing. I just bought a Wii a month or two ago and it took forever just to find one in stock. WTF? The product has been out for years without any significant changes and they STILL can't manufacture enough to keep them in stock? It's one thing when it's a brand new product, but after a couple of years, they should have figured out how to make them.
There are two sides to this coin.
One is intentionally restricting supply to keep the price up and to keep people wanting. You noted that you still bought a Wii. Waiting in line for the iPad a month ago, myself and others in line wondered...is Apple creating an atmosphere that this thing is low in supply and high in demand, so that I'm more inclined to buy one?
The other scenario is the one that plagued the Amiga 1200 in 1992. This great new machine comes out, people all over want it, but simply can't get it anywhere because the company couldn't generate a supply. If memory serves, they also ran into problems like delivery trucks hitting cows and destroying entire shipments.
Commodore went out of business soon thereafter...since Nintendo doesn't seem to be going out of business anytime soon, I'm inclined to believe they are intentionally restricting supply.
At this point, everyone should view Apple as an enemy. Suing their own customers, abusing laws to censor criticism, sending special agents to search people's homes? What's next? They're like the Chinese Communist Party of computing. Control, control, control.
Careful Bongo, or the black helicopters might get you.

1) Unless nintendo ds becomes a phone there is no chance. People prefer all-in-one solution. Most iPhone users never had/though of purchasing a hand held game console.
2) For the fifth year i don not understand how can anyone compare Wii and PS3. Totally different products in a way or customer base orientation. Just look at the age statistics of Wii and PS3 users (not buyers).
At this point, everyone should view Apple as an enemy. Suing their own customers, abusing laws to censor criticism, sending special agents to search people's homes? What's next? They're like the Chinese Communist Party of computing. Control, control, control.
Whoo-hooo! Apple against the world! Fear the Control! Fear the domination!
However, Nintendo's expanded gamer demographics of high school girls and men 30-40 now say they'd rather have an iPhone than carry a DS, according to the report.
Sounds right for my eldest. Carries her iPhone, doesn't carry her DS any more.
Did get her sister a DS Lite last Sunday for a great price - four tokens at Malibu Grand Prix in a Stacker machine, only one try (but I've been pounding on the jumbo version there for quite a while, from which I have a netbook).
Girl Scouts of Northern California gave out PSPs and iPod Touches for incentives for this year's cookie sale which ended in March. You should have seen the number of girls who were gunning for the iPod Touch, which with Square Up, they might be able to accept cards for cookies next year. I can get a solid number this evening, but I believe several of them got it.
At this point, everyone should view Apple as an enemy. Suing their own customers, abusing laws to censor criticism, sending special agents to search people's homes? What's next? They're like the Chinese Communist Party of computing. Control, control, control.
And the Tea Party speaks!
Seriously, these are completely bonkers statements. You are living in a fantasy world if you believe that stuff.
At this point, everyone should view Apple as an enemy. Suing their own customers, abusing laws to censor criticism, sending special agents to search people's homes?
What are you smoking? How about ANY examples of these?
Give it up. We know you are really Steve Balmer posting FUD (really bad FUD too).
The only way Nintendo can compete (hardware wise) if they were to make a cell phone. No one is going to carry around a cell phone and a Nintendo DS with them all the time.
If Nintendo wants to get into the cell phone business, they need to hurry and outbid HP for Palm. That's pretty much their only option. And even if they took that route, it's still pretty risky, and chances of catching up to the iPhone are slim to none.
If Nintendo doesn't want to miss the new mobile revolution, they should start talking with Apple. Nintendo could sell millions and millions of games on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. That would pretty much destroy their Nintendo DS sales, but it would be in their own best interest.
That's why Apple is a juggernaut right now, and no one else is competing. Everyone else is afraid of cannibalizing existing business, they are afraid of innovating too much and alienating legacy software. Apple is not afraid and consumers are loving it. Definitely the right business decision, though it is scary.
Insightful.
I can see Nintendo going the way of Sega and becoming software only if they're not careful. Personally, I think the writing is on the wall for Nintendo. They got one upped by the usurper Sony with the Playstation I. Their Game Cube took a beating at the hands of the PS2. They repackaged the Game Cube into the Wii with the motion sensor thing. Sure, it was a lucky 'fad' for them. It's been near the top for two Christmas in a row. It's sold plenty and had a good run. The whole family pink purse angle on the Wii and the DS deserves some credit to Nintendo. But where they pioneered casual gaming, Apple is going to trample over their carcass and take casual gaming to the next level. ie the 'eco system' is where Apple have them beat. Plain and simple.
I think Nintento's star or time is on the wane. They can't seem to manufacture the Wii. The iPad costs a little more and offers something far more compelling overall for the whole family. Want a DS or an iPod touch? I found the touch to be far more compelling. Internet browsing and cool, simple fun games. And the iPod touch has a C64 emulator.
DS vs the iPod touch. One looks childish the other is the hot gadget to have.
Wii vs iPad. Sure. A price difference of £250. Buy five Nintendo games at £40 and you could have bought an iPad instead of a Wii. I know which I'd rather have. ...and the iPad is something the whole family can use. Remember the initial price of the PS3? And the iPad offers alot more to the family than mere gaming.
Apple's brand is much more grown up and today's kids like that aspirational sophistication.
iPad/Pod games are fun, cheap or free. And the quality is rising. I find many of the DS games either patronising or to quagmirish. Personal opinion. And the price. DS game for £39-40 vs a legion of free or cheap iPod/Pad games? No contest. No packaging. Want the latest hot game? I don't go down to Gameland. I just download it. For me? Apple have the future and Nintendo's nuts in the palm of their hand.
Nintendo would be better served by joining the gold rush. They have some great game IP.
I don't expect to see them cave in the forseeable future. I don't see how Nintendo can turn their back on Sony thinking they've beaten them. Another price cut will see a PS3 come back on them. If it had been cheaper, it would have mopped up against the 360 and Wii. My opinion.
But they are going to take a beating. No mistake about that. And they're not the only ones.
If the DS+ is the best they've got...they better get medicare insurance.
At this point, everyone should view Apple as an enemy. Suing their own customers, abusing laws to censor criticism, sending special agents to search people's homes? What's next? They're like the Chinese Communist Party of computing. Control, control, control.

Hello REACT unit we have a house you need to look into for us. Yeah, another clueless and critical blogger. Yep. Use that judge we bought recently in San Mateo. OK Cool - stay magical!
Our family jumped on the Wii craze, and thought it was great fun... for a while. Once the novelty wore off, we went back to the PS3, which provides a superior experience. We still turn the Wii on, every 2-3 months, to get our Mario Cart fix. If other families are anything like us, I would not say Nintendo won the war with Sony. Early battles, maybe. If I had to choose, I would not want to lose my PS3.
I love gaming on my iPhone! We have owned every Gameboy since the first one, but we probably have purchased our last. The games on the DS are superior, but the sheer number of new, cheap games on the iPhone will keep my interest forever. I currently have 10 games I haven't even tried yet!

That's enemy of NINTENDO's future. Not the future of mankind as you stated above.
Some people comment on the subject without even reading the article. It happens on this forum all the time. Maybe the high number of idiots?!?
IMHO Nintendo is its own worst enemy.
