Stop posting that stupid El Camino. The only American car that doesn't suck on the track is the Vette. (Yes, Camaros suck. Bring out you're stats: they're not racing against good machines)
I would have to say that the Vette Z06 is the best bang for your buck, but I don't think it's your style. I have no idea how much the lotus costs and how much utility you need. If you drive much, and have any sort of cargo, I don't think the Lotus will work. But if it's in your price range and you have a second car, go for it. That way you can also put it in the "Leisure vehicle" tab in your insurance.
The M Coupe is the BMW I'd hit up, if you were to go BMW. The current M3 is 3500 lbs. The only Jap cars I can think of (that aren't old) are NSX's and Skylines, though both are kind of expensive, you'd have to import the Skyline, and lastly the Skyline isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Tell me more about what price range you're talking about and whether or not you have a second vehicle, and I'll think harder.

good post.
the Z06 is the only american car i have respect for, but its kinda heavy and doesnt respond to turns the way id like...
the only bimmers id drive are the M3 and Z8, but both are outta price range. the M roadster is just hideous--ugly as sin, and cant compete w/ the S2000--which is what im coming off of. so at that point, why not just get the S2k, which is a better car and costs less.
i dont think ill get another jap car, though. that 280hp max agreement is kinda a pain in the ass, even though theyre gonna pass if up soon.
i race at the autox and at high speed tracks, so i need a car that can handle high speeds as well as tight turns. the S2k was great fer that, and that still might be an option...
both the S4 and elise will be in the 39-42k price range btw.

It has now a lot of S-Class features but in the price range of the E-Class. Here in Germany started a big advertising campaign for this new car. Yesterday I received a brochure of the new E-Class. My favorite part in the text is this one (translated from German): "A digital surround-system from Harman-Kardon with 8 output stages and 12 instead of 10 speakers provide seven-channel surround-sound to every single seat"
BTW: Just a few months ago the police in Hamburg bought complete new cars: the old E-Class. That is like buying a G4 one day before the G5 rolls out.

sry, mercedes are out. they emphasize the wrong things. to me, performance is more important than style. and the price is way too high fer what u get. it is the only german company that i wont consider.
I checked out some elise specs: it is impressively light. I would be a bit afraid to drive it on the highway or in winds, though.
I have no idea how much it costs, though, and insurance will most certainly be a bitch. If you have seconds car, it might not be so bad.
Even more interesting would be an Elise with an S2k engine or any other performance Honda 4 cyl. The only thing that I would wonder about is the skidpad. I'd make sure to test drive an elise before determining anything else, because if you want a race car, the elise is certainly a race car.
Of course, since you seem torn, here's a very Spline-ish idea:
By a used Rx-7 and do some work to it to make it a track monster, and use the Integra as your daily driver. You could also perhaps get a used Supra.
The trouble is that you pay a lot for European performance.

yes, yer right about the lightness factor--like 1500 lbs, right? that makes fer impressive performance. and it could make an "interesting" daily driver, but hardly practical. at 39k, its a decent value, compared to the 42k or the S4. about the insurance thing--mine should start to go down soon, but i need to hurry up and get married and have kids so it can go down further.
im not sure about keeping my integra--i drive it hard, and its starting to get up there in mileage. and when i get this other car, the poor teg might be driven to death.
and id rather pay more fer european performance than settle fer american and regret it later. and theres nothing wrong w/ japanese. im very tempted to get a TT NSX--eww...0-60 in the low 4s...

Oh believe me, I have no problems with japanese sports cars. . . after all I DO own one. If you have 90+ G's to throw around, the TT NSX is a pretty wicked ride. I don't know where it stands in comparison to the 911 turbo.
If you want a truly wicked race car that barely manages to be street legal, it's about $80,000 and it's called the Ultima GTR. It weighs 1800lbs and it has a 530hp bored out Chevy 350. It's British and mid engine, and it looks like it came from the LeMans. The is some talk in the Rotary community about buying the GTR kits (they come in kits also) without the engine, opting for a turbocharged Mazda 20B. That would be lighter and stronger than the chevy version.
well actually thats out of my price range. if i get the NSX, it would have to be a used one. u can get a good low-mileage NSX fer about 30-40k or so...
How about a hybrid...i.e. one that uses the least possible amount of gasoline per number of miles traveled? Or is that not macho enough for the "small penis" crowd? (quote courtesy of Groverat here)
You want to sponsor terrorism? Then drive a gas guzzler.
Most hybrids are rather slow and ugly. The Subaru WRX STi is neither.

The WRX STi, as far as I know, is not available in America. The normal WRX is 227hp. The Sti is in the 280 club. (The STi has the 2.5L Boxer engine) I have a poster of one on my wall. (rallying , of course) My only gripe with Subarus is that they're ugly, in my opinion. Lastly, the WRX 2.0 only gets 27mpg when you're below 3000 rpm. Hit that turbo and watch gas mileage go to hell. (I speak from experience ) But I'd be fooling myself if I thought mileage is a major concern for you.
WRX's also aren't particularly good for track racing. They perform best in mid-speed situations, where the 4 wheel drive works well. But the higher center of gravity does not bode well for road-racing and hard turning.
