Dell's foray into this new size territory without defining its goals (beyond hoping to sell a lot, which should never be the only goal) seems kinda silly.
With the iPad, SJ/Apple started with a clean piece of paper and asked what does the 3.5" smart phone platform do passably well but not brilliantly?
The answer was a very short list: Books, Movies, Surfing the web, for which they found 10 inches the perfect form factor (With IPad2, I've little doubt we'll see videoconferencing as an additional feature. They'll test drive the concept on the the 4G phone and could well add it in January)
Instead of trying to be a big Phone and a small iPad, Dell should ask, what does the iPad NOT do well? Gaming––I'm not a gamer, but I'd think that 10" is too big, and end-user service delivery Ã* la UPS, FedEx, pizza delivery, in-store sales, etc. It's hard to guess the exact size of that market, but one would think a few million could be sold IF THEY ACTUALLY TARGETED THAT MARKET. As I see it, 5" is pointless if Dell is trying to sell it without clear goals of their intended user
So, he says that the screen is big enough to see whole web pages with no flicking or pinching etc., but when he shows Dell.com you only see half of the page- after he zooms out.
Then, he demonstrates multi-tasking by clicking on a product on the dell website and then doing other things. When he comes back, the page he clicked on is not loaded... it's just the same page as before. Then of course, he pinches the screen to be able to see the (almost) whole page.
Have product demos always been this bad outside of Apple?
the problem is it's NOT a big iPhone or android phone. It's slightly bigger, but not big enough to make it worth owning if you've already got a smart phone.
Wow, at least they picked an appropriate name for it-- where I'm from a streak is the same as a skidmark. I'm sure I don't need to explain what that is...
Looks like a decent device. It has Android which beats putting Windows 7 on it or the unreleased Windows 7 Phone Series OS.
There's situations where you don't want an iPad sized device or bigger and there's times when you want something bigger than a standard phone for media. People will probably buy multiple devices to fit different needs, until some future device can be resized on-the-fly via some flexible display etc.
was just an oversized iPod Touch. This is going to look SO cool up against someone head taking a call!
A repurposed Dell Mini. Well at least it will be running Android. Well custom Android. With Dell enhancements. Dang why did I just flash on an Enzyte commercial??!!
If Jim Carey reprises his role in The Mask he could whip this out with a lime green cover on it for comedic effect.
Ok, so I'm sorry if this is a bit childish, but - the "iPad" was immediately lampooned for sounding like a feminine hygiene product...
....so why would Dell choose the "Streak" moniker, as in:
"Oh noes, I think I just left a Streak on my iPad, I have to go change my batteries, BRB"
Sorry, but this is what I thought the second I saw the name. Yeah, childish, but the iPad / feminine product thing actually got lots of airplay on Fox. Which should be no surprise, I suppose.
LOL I don't mind the Bluetooth headset or using a 3.5mm headphone/mic jack combo found in smartphone phones but adding an speaker and mic for using it as phone is pretty lame. It's only slightly better than the "sidetalking" N-Gage.
The N-Gage makes me shudder but wouldn't the built-in speaker/mic still be useful if you want to do a desk call or include some others in a handsfree call?
Comments
At least the Dell guy could sit up in his chair while he shows of the late comer. Better posture will help him land his next job.
sorry but 5 inches is not a tablet.
I need a tablet just to get 5 inches
Back to all seriousness the phone element is interesting. I still maintain the phone feature will pop up on an iPad eventually.

What? Sit it next to an iphone and say that.

....... Plus, it's perfect for when you have a big call to make.
We have a winner!
How about someone holds one in their hands before blasting it because it's the train to jump on at the moment.
We have a winner!

So you're suggesting that if you own an iPhone, you should get this?
Let's not glorify this piece of cheap looking hardware running a cheap looking OS as a potential iPad competitor...
It fits in the guys hand !!! At its best, this little thing will be remembered as failed iTouch competitor wannabe...
