Um. SRSLY? You wanna go there? (sorry for the snark)

    From MacWorld:
    Quote:

Apple reported sales of $13.5 billion and a profit of $3.07 billion for the three-month period ended March 27. Sales improved 49 percent from the $9.08 billion Apple tallied in the year-ago quarter, while profits rose 90 percent from $1.62 billion a year ago.

Apple?s strong revenue and profit came during a three-month period in which the company had no major product releases.

Compare with Dell's figures from Infoworld:
    Quote:

Net income for the three months ended April 30 was $441 million, up 52 percent from the same quarter last year... Revenue was up 21 percent to $14.87 billion, ahead of the analyst estimate of $14.27 billion.

Granted, Dell's overall revenue was higher than Apple's for the quarter, but damn, check out the profits for each!!

Maybe Dell is moving more product than Apple, but Apple is definitely making a lot more money, and has more satisfied customers. But, it comes down to a philosophical difference between the two companies. To borrow from Neal Stephenson (who said this of Microsoft, but I think it applies in this case as well): Dell would rather have 10 million chronically annoyed customers than a million happy ones. On the other hand, Apple would rather build and sell the best products than the most.

    I don't get it.

In between an iPhone 4G & the iPad, so the screen is still small enough to be annoying in comparison with say a netbook or iPad. - FAIL

16:9 screen vs iPad 4:3. Some will say this can go either way depending on use. If you use it for watching video as the primary use then you'll probably love it. However, since you effectively have a larger screen on the iPad you still loose out and the iPad screen format is better for web pages & iBooks. - FAIL

No one is going to hold this thing to their head, so on the phone capabilities vs an iPad. - FAIL

Camera. - SUCCESS! Sure hope someone makes a add-on card for the iPad with a rotatable camera.

Android vs iPhone OS, again has a lot to do with what you plan to do. You get flash but you don't even know at this point what that will really get you (30min of Hulu?) My wife & I don't miss flash on our iPad, no constant browser crashes and pretty much everything we care about on hulu is available elsewhere via apps or web. - UNDECIDED

Removable battery vs fixed. Since the device is actually much smaller it likely has a much smaller battery. Pretty good chance this means less battery life so the idea of a removable battery is a must. The iPad is advertised to be able to go all day on a single charge. In truth my wife's iPad will go all day on half a charge, could probably go 2 full days on a single charge. Battery life is a huge part of user experience. - FAIL

I honestly am hugely overwhelmed, I actually expect much better from Dell. This thing might be a hit but my own personal opinion is that it's going to be a flop. There are other cool iPad competitors on their way & some are already showing much more promise than this.

Whats the point of answering a comment about dell selling more units by commenting on revenue and profit and finihsing with a "maybe dell is moving more product" ?

    point miss much?

the funny bit is that as inept as they might look with such a stupid and pointless (even anachronistic product) with no market, i am 99% sure this got the green light, because their partners in junk pcs, microsoft, has royally screwed them with no arm windows, and the need for 1gb of memory for putting the unsuited 7 on a tablet, and more importantly because they just don't have the resources to match apple in price, let alone undercut apple, and deliver something coming even close to the ipad.

So, the only solution is to offer something distinctly different that won't allow for negative direct comparison, even if that means that they won't sell sh.it

Haven't these guys learned anything from tec industry, or life for that matter? You have to pick your battles, but they are so into the opportunistic profit mentality, that they can't figure out that with the variety of option in the market ereaders, smart phones, ipods, media players, tablets, netbooks, their half baked not really good at anything device stands no chance.

In fact, I am doing a lot of reading on my iPhone, have completely adapted to it's size and to me 5" seems plentiful. I actually think that this device has better portability/size compromise than iPad.

You 've obviously not used a lot of ereaders an inch down from 6" to 5" makes a huge difference, it's just not any damn good for reading. Seen a lot of paperbacks at this size? I didn't think so.

Considering nowadays there are people who txt more than they talk over phones anyway, I think it definitely has potential.

I haven't seen anyone on a modern smart phone dissatisfied with screen real estate for texting. There's a reason smartphone manufacturers have stuck with pretty much similar sizes. If dell think they are smarter than the rest they better think again, because that's what idiots (or geniuses) usually think, and they are not the latter for sure.

No it's not hypocrisy, it's reality. A device that gains almost 3 times in size to become a reader rather than a phone, is not an oversized nothing, it's just a different class of device, with all sorts of different functions, that all the idiot nay sayers just weren't getting. That was like saying that a limousine, is just an oversized luxury car, it's not, they serve different purposes, they are different. But Streak isn't a different class of device, it's a not a reader or tablet browser, it is an oversized smart phone, anyway you cut it.

I got the point. I was just saying that moving more product doesn't mean much if you don't make much profit off of it.

I don't see paperbacks in iPad size either but still wouldn't call iPad to big for reading novels... though for me it is a bit too big for casual caring around. I know 5" is less than 6" but still much better than 3.5". I guess that is completely individual.

Personally I'd like a bit more space for messages when I open keyboard to reply on my iPhone (especially that keyboard does not disappear after message is sent and you cannot pull it down on your own - you have to leave that message tread and return to it in order to loose keyboard). I don't know if I would actually sacrifice iPhone size for bigger screen in reality, but I think it is interesting idea to have a look at. At the end of the day, I think that is what Dell thinks as well - trying something a bit different that would position their product between smartphones and iPad/tablets. I don't think there is much of a risk there either - if it doesn't sell, Dell will move same logic into bigger casing, slap bigger screen on top and re-brand it into, er, Dell Stream or something.

I think everyone should see (and try) both of them before forming opinion. I haven't tried either, so for me they are either both oversized-something, or they are both not. Of course different form factor/size can and will change they way device can be used, but without trying I can't decide where is the borderline between oversized same-as, and completely different.

I think we can summarize things like that: the iPad is a giant iPod Touch, the Streak is smart-phoneless-tablet, the HTC 4G EVO is phonetablet. But what is the iPhone 4G then?
