I've always heard the term "Golden Master" -- you are right that Gold Master is also a term -- from the recording industry.

So, no, it's not the clueless bloggers -- it's a standard SOFTWARE industry term; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Softwar...ase_life_cycle

I hope my answer doesn't upset you as much as the alleged error...

This is a widely believed myth. Most people come this conclusion based on a small batch of trial and error, not enough to result in a real statistic.

Fact is, while most people think that restoring from backup will cause some persistant bugs to carry over after a restore (which may or may not be true), you'll find a that a full restore with no backup does not always give you a completely clean install.

#1 I firmly believe that devices that have Apple's beta OS installed on them will never work the same again. I am a developer and have used half a dozen devices with beta OS, both 3.0 and 4.0, and none of the devices ever "lose" all of their quirks, no matter how many times you restore it using final public software. They still maintain poor battery life, and the occasional random Apple logo, or random shut off. 95% of the time, after they come out of beta, they work fine, but no amount of restores will ever bring it back to 100%.

All of the behavior of an iPhone is very peculiar and difficult to troubleshoot. When something seems even slightly out of place, or off, or not working, there are a million possibilities, but only one solution....restart it, or restore it.

It's hard to ever know if your particular iPhone and software install are 100% completely bug free, but honestly I don't think that's even possible.

Also, I believe GM 4.0 is stable, but definitely has a few very annoying bugs. Safari, and many video streaming apps, take up to 10 seconds to initiate a connection to the internet.

I am finding some definitive, yet minor bugs in GM 4.0. None have anything to do with sluggishness.

Folders seems to work beautifully with no hang ups or delay.

    My main gripes:

AirVideo does not work. (Despite SJ's ranting claims that by using Apple APIs, this shouldn't happen...oh really steve?)

Safari is slow to start a new session (iGoogle takes up to 10 seconds to begin loading after tapping a bookmark. From there, speed resumes as normal).

? Saving AI's mobile site as a WebClip makes it run extra slow for me.

? Mail is doing some wonky thing where new messages will come in from Mobile Me with no sender, subject or body and a data from 1969. Refreshing Mail or coming in and other of the app doesn't resolve it; I have to double-tap the Home Button, hold down Mail until it wiggles, kill it and then open it back up. This didn't happen before v4.0.

Overall, this is a solid GM but I still have a laundry list of this I wish were changed.
