The manager from my local radio shack called me at 12, asked for my address and said he would call back and let me know if every thing went through. So hopefully my wife's pre order will work out. I had to go to an at&t store for my phone since online system did not show me eligible for an early upgrade. I had to get them to override. They did, I signed a new 2 year agreement then when they went to process my credit card the whole system went down. they took my CC info and said they will process it later, but I am all set and should be able to pickup the phone the 24/25th. There where over 30 people in line when I left. Crazy!!!!
Just got back from my local RS. While a nice store, it is at a disadvantage due to road construction (why I chose it). At any rate, they opened at their normal 9am (they called me yesterday to confirm when they would open and that I was indeed on the list to pre-order). Got there a few minutes before 9 and there was one other person which was there to add minutes to his pre-paid acct. As already reported, RS has dropped the $50 pre-pay on pre-orders. What they are doing is verifying that your AT&T account is indeed eligible for upgrade and then collecting some basic info (name, email addy, address and verifying drivers license). The manager told me that the stores would get pin#s for pre-orders later today and it is that pin # that guarantees you the iphone on the 24th. He told me that I should get an email directly from RS later today and that he would call me as well.
Now on to the trade-in... Okay, the price dropped a few dollars since Saturday, but still works out pretty nice (got $136 plus change). The kicker is that all the local stores ran thru their gift card supply on the EVO launch and they are awaiting more. The manager ran my appraisal through their system and printed it out to put with my orders. He told me that the gift card issue should be resolved later today as well. I was very clear, and repeated, that this was THEIR problem, not mine, as I had my iphone wiped and ready to trade-in on the spot, so I fully expected that the appraisal price as of this morning WOULD BE HONORED. Could not get a firm acknowledgement on the matter, but the manager is a nice guy, so for the moment, I will give him the benefit of the doubt as I have no money on the line and I still have my 3G iphone in my possession.
BTW, by the time the manager (only one working this morning) was finished with me, there were 3 others in line to pre-order, which given that this particular RS is off the beaten path and located on a street undergoing MAJOR reconstruction, would seem to indicate that at least a fair pre-order response at RS.
Will update when this is more to report.
My experience at RS wasn't too bad, but it was scary for awhile. Got there before 10am (PT) and I was first in line and nobody else was there. Traded in my 3GS 32GB and got almost $250 for it (down from $270 a couple of days ago...which was down from $301 a day or so before that). Two other guys showed up and wanted phones and that was it for the whole time...then 10am hit and BOOM. All iPhone orders were being rejected!
Found out a few things from the manager while we were waiting: they had 90,000 phones for the entire chain was one juicy tidbit, but they thought more would be on the way if those went. Also they kept getting texts from higher ups that said that their system was borked and to keep trying. Around the 45 minutes into waiting, they got a text that the 16GBs were sold out and the 32GBs were starting to go quickly. Just when I was about to give up and go home--at the one hour and 25 minute mark--the reservation went through and I received a PIN number. WHEW!
Best of luck to all that are dealing with this "stuff".
So Rat shack told me my order is all set and they will call me when I can pick it up. I hope this is the case since I did not pre pay for the phone, and they did this over the phone for me. Its my wifes B-day present and if i don't get it in June 25-27 ill be empty handed.
