I wonder if the CA politicians, intellectuals, high school students who walked out during school, typical college knowitalls and general nut jobs in the land of 'fruits and nuts' who protested the AZ Immigration Law, will be picketing this blatant violation of rights, as potential 'victims' salivate over the advent of getting the iPhone 4 when out of the blue are asked "Papers, Please!" by some Apple Genius?

I mean getting an iPhone is more intrusive regarding "Documenting" one self then there ever was in Arizona's lenient law reiterating the Federal Law already on the books that government fails to enforce! What are we paying our political leaders for again? I forget...

CA wants to boycott AZ, Lady (dumb-dumb) GaGa wants to boycott BP, can Apple assure that component parts were not derived from BP's oil? Let's do this right! Boycott Apple people, until we know for sure! Who's with me?!

Congrats to all the new iPhone 4 owners! Enjoy!!

So you said Lady Gaga is dumb dumb...well, she made $25m last year.....I wish I were that dumb!!

    She is Great!!!

Yeah, they told me something to that effect. Unfortunately, I have to drive over an hour to get to the store, and I can't leave until the afternoon. I was told I could call to make sure they would have a phone when I got there.

You are wrong...the reservation will be held till the end of the day..

Is anyone else having trouble getting a consistent price quote? When I checked with AT&T last week, they said I was not eligible for an upgrade, but I could purchase the iPhone 4 for $399. Then when I pre-ordered last week, it said I would be at $199. Then I used the link in this reminder email sent out today, and it said I wold have to pay $599! No one will give me a consistent answer! Anyone else having this problem? Any suggestions? Thanks!

Pre-authorization is not the same thing as an reservation or a pre-order. Pre-authorization is the bit where you put in some details and they tell you if you're eligible or not.

If you've pre-ordered, they're going to ship one to your door; you're covered. If you've reserved, they will literally put a sticker with your name on it on the phone you reserved. As long as you show up at some point on Thursday to buy it, you will get one. This will be just like the iPad reservations.

Apple stores will have additional stock for those who didn't reserve one, but how many there will be, no one can say. Even the stores don't know what inventory they're going to get until they get it. Now, can we all calm the hell down?

The text in the email said that "Pre-authorization does not guarantee iPhone availability at an Apple Retail Store. iPhone is sold on a first-come, first-served basis."

To me, that is distinct from pre-order or reservation and I take it they are referring to the check to see if your'e eligible to upgrade at the reduced price. So, in other words, confirming that you're eligible doesn't guarantee you'll get one on the 24th.

The email says the reserved phone will be available for me till close of business on the 24th. At any rate, I'll know for certain on Thursday.

EDIT: Aduzik beat me to it

So what happens to your reservation if they don;t have a phone for you? does it still expire after 24 hours and you have to make a new reservation?

The store told me that if I showed up on the 24th and did not get a phone because they had run out, I would be prioritized to receive one when they get more. I think it is highly unlikely that stores will not have enough to provide a phone to everyone who was preauthorized for store delivery on the 24th.

Man, yesterday I was having a meltdown when a friend read my original Apple email conformation to me saying the phone was going to cost me $699!!!! I was so afraid that my upgrade status had changed. Seriously my old upgrade date was 4/11/2011 and they changed it like two weeks ago to the 6/24 date. I was stoked. I guess they heard me screaming " I can't wait for a VERIZON iphone chant" I would do about once a month!

In any case, I for one am thankful for this reminder today, I can breath easier and my Blood Pressure is near normal..

Man, am not liking the new price structure though. Clearly to me it's curtains for the ATT iphone only carrier. All the moves lately almost certainly prove that the ATT only days are coming to a close, thank god. The moves ATT made recently first way moving up upgrade dates like mine by more than a year (remember it's ATT, they'd NEVER do this if something wasn't up) then the price structure, then the cancellation fees, and then and then and then... Anyway.

Time to list my 3gs 32GB on ebay for $299. Each time I sell my old phone I get my money back and enough to buy my new one for $0.... Try that anroidettes.

hey einstein, the first two are required for a credit check, and a credit check has been required for any contracted phone since the invention of cellphones [or for home cable/internet, or for a car, a house, a department store credit card, or anything else that involves financing. you need the credit/debit card to verify address and to PAY for the phone, and you need your old cellular account number to transfer your phone number.

Pay the full unsubsidized price for a contract free phone. They need your SSN for a credit check and they need a credit check because you are signing up to pay over $2000 and they want to make sure you are likely to be able to pay.

But what if you're keeping your existing iPhone AT&T plan (no changes) and simply getting the new iPhone? They shouldn't need to do another credit check.

I've got a question that I hope someone can answer for me:

For whatever reason, my AT&T FamilyTalk plan has been flagged as a "business" account, also known as a FAN. Harmless enough, right? Except for whatever reason, Apple is unable to activate phones on these kinds of accounts in their store, you have to do it at home or in the AT&T Store. At least, this was the case back in 2008 when I tried to (unsuccessfully) buy an iPhone 3G.

I wanted to pre-order online from Apple because I would then get the phone delivered to my house for problem-free at-home activation. Of course, having a "business" account, Apple refused to let me pre-order online. I thus had no choice but to use the Apple Store app on my iPhone and pre-order the iPhone 4 for pickup at my local Apple Store.

Here's the situation... Will they let me pay for the hardware and just take it home to activate? Or will they require me to (unsuccessfully) try to activate it in their own store? Because if the latter, I get the strong suspicion they won't let me buy the hardware I reserved and I'll have to wait another month or w/e for AT&T to get some in stock.

If they allow at-home activation, then I feel I should be able to just walk in, pay for the hardware and leave, but you never know with Apple.
