Being in manufacturing I think one of two things happened. Something went wrong with the color injection process or what I think is more likely, they simply used all available resources to crank out as many black ones they could knowing there was going to be a shortage.
And, being in finance, I'd venture a guess they also concluded that the extra burst of publicity and hype a few weeks from now couldn't hurt.
But my wife is a bit peeved, since I've now got mine, but she wants the white (or no iPhone).
I suspect the latter. Historically it seems like the white models are far far less popular so why waste resources
At least now we have something of a time line and a confirmation that the "I want white" folks should NOT go stand in line thinking that there will be walk ins tomorrow.
Not only is everyone here Tech Insiders, but also all Manufacturing/Logistics/SCM experts! We could open up a Consultancy!
I own a manufacturing business. . While not the same industry or volume, it's all about the same. Details, details and supply.
I'm betting they are producing all black until the surge becomes manageable. That's what we would do. I wonder if they were caught off gaurd a bit when preorderibg started with a large slant toward black they didn't anticipate or they would not be up to full production fast enough and realized the impending mess. At least Apple have customers that will wait and not call the next company down the road because they are going to miss a deadline.
I had to settle for a white 3G because black sold out on opening day.
Also think about the number of countries left to open up their preordering.
Wife and I are waiting with bated breath for the whitey here in Japan. We aren't caving in to the dark side. Our friends recently received their black iPhones. We are holdn' out!!!! Then we will be the ones with the white iPhone everyone is coveting.

It isn't a waste of resources if they're selling.

Coating antennae is not like launching a new phone. Just the switch at a factory being rather affordable and feasible within declared delays.
