Oops, we can now expect Rick1138 to quietly disappear, never to be heard from again.

Do we have to have these stupid, religion-bashing threads every 3 weeks?

Christ, don't you people ever get it out of your systems?

Scientology...what a scam. A cousin of mine got into it a few years back and before he could say "L. Ron Hubbard" he had parted with over $20,000 and in return got some kind of cheap 'bio-feedback' device (my uncle, who is an electroncs engineer examined it and said it was constructed from about $9-57 worth of stuff anyone could get from Radio Shack!!!). My cousin got out of the Scientologists soon after that but he did get visited on a few occasions subsequently by Scientology officials demanding that he return the "device", (sounds a little "Men in Black"...but apparently true!). He didn't disappear or get abducted, and he's still very much alive! He doesn't get hassled any more but he's still some $20000+ out of pocket. But it was his choice. Scientology is a SCAM like any other religion that demands material goods or unbending, unquestioning adherence in return for (dubious) spiritual "enlightenment".

I'm not a scientologist, nor do I have any love for organized religion, but Christ, how about a little respect for others?

It's really sad that I, of all people, have to point these things out.

I pointed it out, and look what it got me...

Of course you may think that I am part of the problem too being part of an organized religion and all.

In my opinion Scientology is an abusive cult and not a religion,I am not against religion, mainstream or otherwise, not at all.I'm not posting this out of disrespect for others, but out of concern for others.

You're not allowed to even talk about religion because you might offend someone (like sensitive, easily-offended groverat)! I guess we shouldn't talk about Bush because we have to "respect" Republicans, right? Bah.

Noah himself has started numerous threads about religion, and they were great (except for that nimrod Exercise in Frivolity). It's one of the best things you can talk about in AppleOutsider.

Sorry, but religion isn't sacred. (uhh, that came out wrong)

...I know...got it out of my system long ago...when you don't need religion all this is redundant...

There is a difference between discussing religion and "I am trying to convince her that Scientology is a dangerous cult."

Why the hell do you think it's a dangerous cult if you don't even know why?

There are many that believe it is and many that disagree. So he is looking for documented evidence beyond merely things he has heard that backs up his point. I cannot blame him for that, although I have none to offer. I have not looked much at Scientology. For the most part it never interested me as a subject.

Why do you think I don't know why it is a dangerous cult? Actually I know quite a bit about cults-I took a course on cults when I was in high school-I knew about Bo and Peep years before the Hale-Bopp tradgedy. As a class project we started our own cult-it was very successful, very easy to trick people. The reason I am looking for online links is because I can't easily send a book to Russia, and it is difficult for someone in Russia to order books online. One of the problems in finding online resources that take a critical view of Scientology is that the cult tries to supress any criticism. The reason I am trying to convince her of the danger of Scientology is that they will try to manipulate and defraud her.

Oh, I don't know, my suspicions were first raised when you recruited the help of strangers on the internet.

If you know enough to make a dramatic statement like "X is a dangerous cult" you shouldn't really need to ask for help from strangers on a Macintosh-related messageboard.

Yes, but it does not falls under religion by many european country standarts. Anyway in an ethical point of vue it does not belong to a state the right to decide who is a religion and who is not. But for me a religion should deal with metaphysic rather than money even if all church need money in order to work. A religion should not try to isolate the member from his family nor to decide who must be his friends and who is not.

The only thing i know is that some people have lost many money with the Scientology church. Personnaly one i my near have some problem with scientology, luckyly he was money less, so they ask him to do work in exchange , he sign a leonian contract asking him to do years of work in exchange of some help (means the right to participate to their seminar). According to the french law this contract was illegal. When we informed him what was the scientology , he leave it. But people from this church try to force him to come back, but they fail.
