You misunderstood my post. I know there hasn't been a refresh at this point. I was addressing the two very different rumors/reports on the varying severity of the issue. On one side Apple says it has affected so few users that they are discontinuing the promotion and returning to normal refund policies. On the other hand this CEO from Telcel in mexico is stating the problem is so bad that Apple has had to plan an upcoming hardware refresh to fix it. I am pointing out the contradiction in this situation.
Now do you follow what I was saying?
Spreading FUD?
There'll be a hardware refresh alright, in June 2011.
Which will then be followed by a class action to get every iPhone 4 that replaced with new ones as that would be Apple admitting that the 12 million(?) they?ve sold worldwide are defective. Great idea, DaHarder¡
Actually, it would be a violation of federal rules of evidence to use the changed product to prove a defect in the old product.
I got mine, jack. Actually I bought a Bumper along with my iPhone 4 on the day they came out. I would never have used it without a case anyway. I thought it would be my temporary case, but I ended up liking the Bumper. It's grippy and looks nice. Like it was built, by Apple, for the phone. Stuck with it.
They refunded my credit card the price of the Bumper without me having to lift a finger after Steve's press conference.
And I too, do not think there will be any interim re-design. iPhone 5 in June of next year will be the next 'redesign' opportunity.
I have had no dropped calls and much more consistent network connectivity over my iPhone 3G.
Maybe it's just me, and maybe lots of the usual names will run to attack this statement. but I don't experience this problem, none of my friends do and I've yet to meet a single person who has. Every single person I've met who owns one says it's the best phone they've ever owned.
Media fud? Or just a very unfortunate, very small vocal minority?
Depends on your signal where you live. Maybe you and your friends live in a good signal area from AT&T. I tried an iPhone 4 out at my house and a few other places, and I get very bad reception where I am. I was pretty easily able to get it to go to searching for a signal.
i'd put money on iPhone 5 having the current antenna system.
I'd say similar, but not exactly the same. If they moved the gap between the 2 antennas to the bottom or top of the phone, instead of right on the side where your hand goes, there wouldn't be a problem. I could see that happening. I don't know if that would piss off all the iPhone 4 buyers though.
Will not be. Steve is not one to to eat his hat. Not all times, at least!
And why should he? He was right. Again. I'd rather see the pundits and analysts admit they blew a minor problem completely out of proportion and Apple's response was more than generous. A lot of people with free cases now who never experienced this problem, and everyone who remained unhappy has had plenty of time to return the phone for a full refund.
So who are these people still complaining? Are they stupid or masochistic?
There'll be a hardware refresh alright, in June 2011.
I'm not spreading anything. Rather I am referring to both factual statements from Apple and this Telcel guy and making the point they are vastly different. Did you not take your brain medicine today? Please don't accuse me of spreading anything around here.

Yeah, because this Telcel guy has the whole inside track on Apple, because... while the rest of the world knows nothing. These are just bad rumors with no foundation.

Why are Apple Fans so quick to jump the gun on anything that hints against Apple?
DJinTX wasn't spreading anything or claiming it as his own. He simply stated two different stances (one from Apple, and one from Telcel) that are basically opposite. Nowhere did the post say that either one was telling the absolute truth.

Yes again. The whole thing has been blow out of proportion. Yes there is a way force the antenna to fail. That should surprise no one whom has ever used an FM radio, either in a portable or a car or a TV antenna for that matter.
The real problem is a bunch of ignorant bloggers posting stories to the like of: iPhone 4 fails because when I do xyz, abc happens. The simple response would be why do you do xyz if you know abc will happen. I use the word ignorant above on purpose because it is the kindest way I know of to describe somebody that jumps on the bandwagon when they don't understand the technology or problem at hand. It is sort of like the people backing human caused global warming when there simply isn't enough credible evidence to support that position.
The fact remains that iPhone 4 has a very good antenna giving the iPhone excellent performance. This has been demonstrated by enough people that one should be confident that is the case. Can the iPhone 4 be handled in a way that defeats the antenna, sure but show me an antenna that can't be. Like any good tool there is a right way and a wrong way to make the use of that tool.

Why should an iPhone 4 user be protected from improvements to iPhone any more than the other generation owners. This idea of entitlement just has to go. Apple changes the internals and externals with every iPhone revision. IPhone 4 users should have little impact on that.

I'm talking friends, family and colleagues all over the world, not just locally.
I travel extensively for work in the UK, across Europe and in the US. On the whole the US cellphone experience is inferior, there just doesn't seem to be the infrastructure in place. But zero antennae issue. Ever.

Your right about that. My old iPhone 3G worked fine at home and at work, and others with 3G's and 3GS still work fine at home and work, but neither of our two iPhone 4's did. Constant dropped calls even with a bumper. I've had to purchase an AT&T Microcell at both locations to get the iP4's to work.
I think those who report no problems have unusually strong signals, but anyone with a marginal signal (2 bars in my case) will have more problems with dropped calls with the iP4 than with older iPhones.
We have several older iPhones on my company plan and we'll not upgrade any more of them to iPhone 4's until they improve the reception.
I'm still waiting for a hardware fix. I'll get an iPhone 4 at that time.
Conidering Apple's statement this HW "change" will come with the iPhone 5, but I wouldn't expect the antenna to no longer be the frame in the next iPhone.
I also expect other vendors to start using the same basic design the same way the have all move to multi-touchscreen snartphones after pooh-poohing the original iPhone.
As an aside, just half an hour ago, my nacked iPhone 4 fell out of the pocket of my jacket onto the floor (some sort of hard plastic, a train to be precise) without suffering any ill-effects.
Just for an opposing data point, I dropped mine from about knee high onto a sidewalk and it got major scuffs all over one corner, and a little chunk of the "super hard special alloy steel" just fell out. I know rock is harder than steel and can scratch it so I expected the scuffing, but what kind of crap steel has chunks falling out of it at the slightest knock?
It's a great phone and I love it, but all that guff about how it's made with "special steel" and super-hard glass is ... well, guff.
Like most Apple products it's a delicate flower that needs to be treated with kid gloves really.

The Telcel person has as much credibility as you do. NONE!

But... but... Ireland told us that antenna issue is so bad Apple will change hardware comes October???...
Ireland had to use 4 rubber covers I heard.

I'm guessing after Sept 30 Apple will be going to the "Ask for a case if you're having antenna issues Program".. I think..
As per Apple's announcement, isn't that what calling AppleCare would accomplish?
