Then start talking about real sports like snooker or the Giro. Those are the only excuse for staying in in this fine weather (oh yes and exams )

I was down by the harbour and was sitting on this lawn yesterday when Denmark played.

When the team scored the final goal you could hear a loud roar from the apartments like if I had been on the stadion. I simply don´t get why people would rather sit indoors on a day like that. At least they could have taken the radio with them...

Typical: I stay up to watch the Argentina Nigeria game (a very good one), and the one time I doze off for 5 minutes, Batustita scores the only goal of the game. Fvck.

    lol.

Go Costa Rica. Land of sun and big-ass Tarpon (fish)! Amazing how Costa Rica qualified and Holland didn't. I guess the Dutch minor league system went into the crapper a few years ago? Otherwise you'd think in a place with such great soccer tradition they could at least field a team as good as say...Poland. lol

    >>This is going to be a tough Cup to watch. Virtually every start time is between 1 am and 5 am CDT

That's not a problem at all if you have Tivo. I usually watch the matches in the morning, when I get up.

Tivo is the best. I don't understand why it's not more popular.

Allez la France! Mais sans Zidane, c'est pas la peine...

Now that's good to read! The Netherlands is mentioned after all...

Cheering for the Danes, Belgians, Irish, Senegalese, Germans this time: can't make up my mind, any suggestions?

    DE

    I´m cheering for the Irish.

I lived there for a while. Great country, great people. And you have to respect the way they got rid of our spoilt little rich boys and the Hitler clone we had for a national manager.

The Senegalese, well I bought their jersey. I have a French flatmate see, and I´d take any chance to rub their arrogant faces in it. She actually told me before the world cup that it was basically a formality. FYI, we, the Dutch, have the monopoly on arrogance in Europe.

Belgians, well I am from Limburg so I might just as well wish them well.

    Germans, never.

But...You´ll neeeeever beat the Irish (repeat to infinity)

Turkey got SHAFTED by that Asian ref. I can't belive he gave Brasil a penalty kick when the foul clearly occured outside the box. I mean the guy deserved a yellow card for sure but a penalty kick? That was weak. First truly pitiful call I've seen so far - though I've only watched three games (Argentina - Nigeria, England - Sweden, and this one).

Grrr. I don't like Turkey but that call sucked.

Really, Holland missing from World Cup, what a shame, good news though, Feyenoord has the UEFA cup.

    Sorry, double post.

I officially hate the World Cup now. I got all of three hours sleep sunday night because I had a deadline, and so I come home only to be awakened throughout the night by my rowdy soccer-watching hooligan neighbors watching soccer at ungodly hours. I took a "me" day to catch up on sleep and to keep myself away from potential targets of my rage.

soulcrusher-Congrats on Costa Rica I heard they beat China 2-0! Gotta be a great thing for your country.

Very big disappointment for China. My dad has Chinese graduate students and I went in today with him and a Chinese girl stayed up till like 4 or 5 am just to watch the game. The whole country was watching it. Hard to believe it's the first time they've qualified for the World Cup.

Even more amazing is the fact that Brasil has qualified for all 17 World Cups - no one else has done this...and of course, they've won 4. Something also unmatched.

What's the nickname they give their brand of soccer down there again? Besides "Damn good" I mean...

Yep. I watched the game with some friends. It was crazy, it was 2 a.m. on a tuesday and everyone was celebrating on the streets. Pretty cool.

Now, we gotta beat Turkey on our next game.

BTW, the world cup has changed my sleeping schedule. I now go to bet at 4 p.m. and wake up at 2 a.m.

Pretty crazy, I am awake when everyone is asleep.

    The U.S. beat Portugal. 3-2

That's good, we are showing the world that we play quality football here in CONCACAF.

That game was amazing to watch. I'm still seeing visions of Tony Sanneh's phenomenal cross to Brian McBride. Looked like it was straight out of a video game or something.
