I think it's pretty difficult to slip in an application that effectively is able to spy on your address book and send any information gathered back to the app producer. Isn't this completely against the SDK guidelines?
I was talking about my Mac but yes, I imagine the iDevices would be safe.
You're suggesting that Apple will obtain access to my private photo collection, see the name tags and then somehow use this information? That is not being proposed.
Faces is really useful and has helped to sort years of family photo's. I also have my name and address on my computer, and at my local blockbuster. I also have a passport and a bank account and a credit card. Care to explain what information apple is storing that any of the latter do not?
If a private (non government) company has access to my information, it is because I have supplied it.
I have no problem with this, at all.
I also don't see what Apple are doing that is so different to any other company on the planet?
This is the stalkers and pedophiles dream service going to a park taking a picture of someone and seeing if the person is tag somewhere in the clouds to find personal information. Yes, I know the governments can do this long time ago but I just don't trust the stalker down in our block.
Is more of an augmented reality company I guess, but I love it. If it can regognize business cards and names as well I think that that would make it ever better. I feel it would be kind of awkward pointing a camera at another person just to send them a text.
On the other hand if this allows for auto-tagging for facebook say it could be a pretty big deal.

This is mostly baseless paranoia. People said the same thing about the Web when it came out, and Facebook, and a ton of other things. As long as the proper barriers and locks are put on things it won't be any different from anything else.
It's just technology, it has good uses and bad uses. In an increasingly connected world, the "bad men" have increased opportunities, but so does everyone else (i.e. - the cops). There's nothing new here.
Edit: Another aspect is that paedophiles are typically pillars of the community and/or relatives or close friends of the victims. The idea of random strangers in raincoats visiting public parks with cameras is something that does happen, but rarely. Shows like CSI make us think it happens all the time, but it's much more likely that a relative, the Chief of Police, or the Boy Scout leader (who already has access to the kids, and might be even be on their FaceBook list already), is going to be the one to watch out for.

I will never allow such a device to be anywhere in my direct line of sight. It is bad enough that Apple is working on the other spyware previously announced. But this shit is WAY too scary for me.
Next thing you know, Apple will "offer" to "store" your fingerprints to "help" with "security". DNA samplers built into the keyboard?
Lenovo does it with their fingerprint scanning technology built in to secure your laptop. Yep Apple's the only sinner in this brothel.
For that matter, you have no idea how much info Goggle has on you, or who has purchased your data from any number of sources, like your local DMV. Yeah. It's worse than even your feverish mind could possibly conceive. And it's too late - and it won't have to be in your direct line of sight. Embedded cameras are cropping up all over, and most of these systems don't need a full frontal from your face, just a partial or profile will be sufficient.
Good. After a night of Guinness I need help remembering who I am.
It's enogh that your iPhone knows who you are. It will call the nearest taxi driver and you will be brought home savely. But next thing in the morning your beloved device will give you some headache and say iToldyouso !!
Hey, I know Apple has some sort of facial recognition, but after all this time it still can't orient my pictures (the ones with people in them) automatically. It seems so simple if they can know what a face looks like, where eyes are and what orientation the eyes are, etc. But maybe it can't tell a face upside down from right-side up. If this new software will do that, then finally when I import my pix into iPhoto (or Aperature) the software could automatically turn my pictures to the correct orientation.
Well, for those pix with people in 'em. And if course the option to do that would be able to be turned off in the prefs.
I've mentioned this in Apple forums, but I know no-one of consequence really reads those. Don't you think this would be a good use of facial recog? A large percentage of my pix are portrait and therefor need to be turned in iPhoto. This feature would really save time.
The iPad could definitely do with accounts, much more so than the iPhone. And logging in with your face would be much more secure than with a password.
Though if/once it comes out, I wonder how long before someone posts a YouTube video of them holding up a photo of someone in front of an iPad and it accepting the login.
iPad needs accounts, but I don't know if this is the solution. It's a cute gimmick, but I think a four digit password for regular folks would be a better, more secure solution.
If you are interested about Face recognition I can propose you one great free to download book which inspire some future ideas by identifying potential research directions.
This book will serve as a handbook for students, researchers and practitioners in the area of automatic (computer) face recognition.

you're suggesting that Apple want to take over the world, and monitor your every move.
These guys think that Apple is going to track them down and kill their children!
No, Apple wouldn't do that. Therefore, they have NOTHING to worry about.
Go back to sleep. Apple will not take over the world or monitor your every move. Therefore, it is all good.
I await the day when my iMac says. Welcome, Dexter. How are you today.
I used to have my "Windows wakeup" sound hacked into the "Good Morning, Dave" line that HAL said in the movie.
Sounds like tech that'll go in a rev of iPhoto or Aperture. Would be nice for the iPhone too.
Finally some sound point of view.

Utterly irrelevant.
