I also like "Standing Outside A Broken Phonebooth With Money In My Hand" (AKA that song with the Bo Diddley "I've been Downhearted, Baby" sample) by Primative Radio Gods.
Heck, I could go on and on, a lot of my favorite songs fall into this category: Come on Eileen, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Life in a Northern Town, Afternoon Delight etc, etc, etc...
And I have to question the Stray Cats and Joan Jett entries:
Stray Cats also had hits with "Stray Cat Strut" and "(She's) Sexy + 17". They also had singles of "Runaway Boys" and "I Won't Stand In Your Way" (a cool doo-wop thing). Those last two weren't HUGE hits, but they got quite a bit of MTV play.
As for Joan Jett, "I Love Rock & Roll" was her first (and most recognized) hit, but remember "Crimson and Clover", "Bad Reputation", "Do You Wanna Touch Me" (why yes, Joan, actually I do...) and "The French Song".
And, like Pat Benatar, Joan Jett is still out there, playing her butt off and hasn't slowed down. And she's quite sexy in a "man, she might kick my ass if I don't behave..." kind of way.
Yeah, suddenly I'm missing Napster pretty bad too! I use Limewire and I've snagged some good stuff, but it seems very "hit or miss".
I know he's had many more than one, but I nominate Eddy Money as the KING of cheesy puff-rock (not to be confused with cheesy poofs, little-kid-rock, or Sean "puff-diddy-nack-paddy-whack-give-yo-ho-a-bone" Combs).
Man I remember in early high school I thought the guy was the king of makeout rock - a true genius in a cheesy age. But after hearing a few oldies but not-so-greaties, and some of his videos - I'm fvcking embarrased I even know who he is.
I always thought Eddie Money had a stupid look on his face when he sang. A cross between facial paralysis and just having been beaten up in a bar fight.
Although, that one song he had, "Think I'm In Love", is pretty cool. Nice solo...we used to play it, back in the day.
Other than that, he can go to hell. Especially that stuff he did in the late 80's and 90's ("Take Me Home Tonight" and so forth).
I've never heard Starry, Starry Night, is it any good? I'm guessing by looking at the lyrics it's about Van Gough...
Dang, if any of the file-sharing programs worked for me, I'd love to check it out. American Pie is my all-time favorite song most days. (In My Life, Beatles the others.)
Of course, I could actually BUY a Mclean compilation CD sometime, too, I guess.
Aw man, I LOVED Big Country (bummed that Stuart Adamson bought it recently...found dead in a hotel room, no less...).
Anyway, I always loved "Fields of Fire". They released it as a single and a video, but, of course, it didn't seem to make near the impact that "In A Big Country" did. Believe it or not, "Fields of Fire" is even MORE rousing and stirring and has tons of the signature "electric guitar sounding like bagpipes" thing going on!
Anyone remember this song? I can stick it in my iTunes share folder or something.
And yes, "Cannonball" by The Breeders. ASS KICKING track! Would I be going to far if I said that song makes me...well, you know...randy. Frisky.
Comments
Everything's been downhill since.
Also:
M - "Pop Muzik"
DeeLite - "Groove Is In The Heart"
Icicle Works - "Whisper To A Scream"
Animotion - "Obsession"
EBN-OZN - "A, E, I, O, U & Sometimes Y"
Martin Briley - "Salt In My Tears"
Scritti Politti - "A Perfect Way"
Oh, and The Beatles - "She Loves You"
I nominate :
Edie Brickell- What I Am (Is What I Am)

Aye! Good choice. In the interests of being different, I nominate the New Radicals.

PS, I miss Napster really bad all of a sudden.
"Rock this Town" - Stray Cats
"(I Love) Rock and Roll" - Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
"Rock and Roll Highschool" - Ramones
Don't know for sure about the last one...still, I haven't listened to commercial radio since the '70's...
How can a Beatles song be a one hit wonder?

DeeLite - "Groove Is In The Heart"

That is the ultimate one-hit wonder. Great tune and video!

Ugh...
Those would be my choices.
But I LOVE older stuff too (60's and 70's):
60's
The Rivieras - "California Sun"
The Troggs - "Wild Thing"
The Trashmen - "Surfin' Bird"
Ronny & The Daytonas - "Little GTO"
70's
Sammy Johns - "Chevy Van"
Melanie - "Brand New Key"
Starland Vocal Band - "Afternoon Delight"
Hot Chocolate - "You Sexy Thing"
SO many more...good ones too! I've been downloading this crap from Limewire lately. Talk about bringing back memories...
Mungo Jerry-In the Summertime
Shocking Blue-Venus
...........................................
I can't think of the third one.

Here are the lyrics:
http://www.lyricscafe.com/g/groban_josh/004.htm
They are my #1, definitely.
#2 is "No Rain" - Blind Melon
I will set my own criteria as "actual good song, it's a shame they didn't catch on and are unappreciated".
I'll second:
"What I Am" - Edie Brickell
"Standing Outside A Broken Phonebooth" - Primitive Radio Gods
I'll add:
"Big Country" - Big Country
"Red Right Hand" - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
"Fast Car" - Tracy Chapman
"Cannonball" - The Breeders
"Caught By The Fuzz" - Supergrass
"Grey Walls" - Richard Thompson
"Superman's Dead" - Our Lady Peace
"In The Meantime" - Spacehog
"Too Far Apart" - Wilco
And my one absolute guilty pleasure:
"Blue (Dah Ba Dee)" - Eiffel 65
*runs and hides in shame*
