[quote]I think if Apple were to introduce a "prosumer" tower computer line, they would use a new case. The current Powermac case is too expandable, i.e., too expensive, for a consumer computer. Apple would be better off to offer fewer PCI slots, less HD expansion space, in a smaller enclosure, so their manufacturing costs go down, and they can retain a high margin.

Margins are already high. Why can't they pull an iMac and just leave the case as is, and intro a new case w/ new mobo whenever the mythical G5 get here. Design already paid for, no more R&D and cheap parts.

tell that to all the ipod owners, and last i checked the new imac is well above consumer pc price points

MaCommentary, the "in this economy" arguement doesn't really hold water. In six months, nine at the most the US economy will be back on track. Additionally the audience the G5 is aimed at, the Pros, are going to buy at almost any point in the economic cycle. They almost always have access to the capital and/or credit facilities to buy equipment when they need it.

I've already accepted speculation that the G5 won't be out until next year. So what happens? Railhead posts this on their web site today (1/29/02):

"I also think it?s great that Apple introduced these new systems quietly. Why? For one thing, the high-end system only went from dual 800MHz to dual 1GHz ? that?s not a ?huge? leap to make a big fuss about, insofar as how the ?average consumer? sees things. But the best part about the quiet update is that it?s Apple?s way of saying: ?So? Dual 1GHz Macs. That?s no big deal ? power isn?t in the GHz, but if you think dual 1GHz will blast through the gigaflops, wait until you see our G5s in a few months.?

Yup. The G5. That, my friends, will be something to ooo and ahhh over?"

Now, I don't know how accurate they are, I'm just posting this info so that others in these forums can give feedback on their past predictions.
