Anyhow, the iOS 4.2 site for the iPad (http://www.apple.com/ipad/software-update/) has just been updated and now lists the feature AirPrint as "Print mail, photos, web pages, and more directly to a printer on a wireless network". It does not talk about "some HP printers" or anything like that.
I see your point as well, and I'm coming to the view that this may not be a technical issue, in which case any resolution is uncertain, so delaying it may just not be worth doing. They can always put out a minor update later to enable it, if whatever issue is holding it up is resolved.
