Is it AppleInsider Member of the Year time again?
Seems to have been a long time (over a year) since I proudly wore the medal.
Now that summer is winding down, should we perhaps begin the balloting for this prestigious recognition?
Any rules/guidelines we should lay out and agree on?
This would be for an entire year, beginning on whatever date we choose as the cut-off/announcement.
The winner would have, under his name in the threads "AppleInsider Member of the Year 2002-2003" and be given temporary banning/thread deleting powers.
Kidding about the banning/deleting thing...
The AppleInsider Member of the Year (hereafter AIMY) should be someone reasonably well-liked and respected, responsible for a fair share of thought-provoking posts, dashing wit, unique insight into the goings-on at Apple, as well as current events and so forth.
An opinionated sumbitch, BUT who is grounded and firmly entrenched in the beliefs (doesn't waver or flip-flop), isn't a shit-stirrer (that rules out approximately half of the Fireside Chat crowd) and is seen by the community at large as an all-around swell guy and someone who represent the coolest and best of AppleInsider.
Here's the rule. Only one nominee per member, and to make it easy to see while scrolling through, please apply the UBB bold tags so the name jumps out easily at you.
Fair enough? Oh yeah, if so inclined, you may include an explanation or cite evidence why your nominee is deserving of this award.
I officially (inasmuch as a doofus like me can) kick-off the AIMY nomination process.
We can iron out the details of "how long" and so forth as we go. I figure at least a month? That would give everyone a chance to think about it and post in their casual, leisure time.
Let the nominations begin (I shall submit mine by the weekend)!

Perhaps we could do something cool like this: what if we donated a buck or two and the winner actually won a gift card to use at the Apple Store?
I don't know the logistics of all this...just throwing stuff out there.
Would be cool if we could offer an iPod or something actually worthwhile and cool as a prize to the winner!
Anyway, this is the kind of stuff that can be discussed and decided on as you make your nominations.
Oh yeah: you can indeed nominate yourself.
Remember: Nominees name in BOLD for easy viewing

By the way, it bears repeating that I am NOT Mr. T
Our clever mods have already established this. I merely gave the above notice as a public service announcement - a test of the emergency broadcast system, if you will.

Okay, NOW let the nominations begin...
Hassan i-Sabbah for outstanding patience.
Hey wait...maybe we should make these annual awards more like the ESPYs. That way, we can have more fun with it. Consider in addition to AIMY:
AICY (AI Comedian of the Year)
AIHY (AI Hemorrhoid of the Year - this is a person we find to be, shall we say, a pain in the ass)
AIPY (AI Politician of the Year)
etc.
Of course those are only examples to get people thinking, but I think it would be pretty fun.

thought-provoking posts, dashing wit, unique insight into the goings-on at Apple, as well as current events and so forth."
SO what were the rules the year pscates won? <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />
I also think there should be other categories like
"Best supporting argument in a Fireside Chat"
"Best Foreign Post"
"Best Picture:
"Best poster in a dramatic role."
"Best editing of an emoticon"
"Best animated gif in a thread"
"Best musical"
"Vanguard Thread award"
"Best Screenplay"
"Best writing in a rumor"
Where is this shindig held anyway?

<strong>I think we all know who should be member of the year... of course the one with the most posts... Mr. EmAn </strong><hr></blockquote>
someone seems a bit cocky...perhaps it is the person who refers to himself (or herself) in the third person?

EmAn.. I would vote for you but...

Now... you DO post a lot... but most of it is.. "yeah I agree" or "that seems about right" and when someone says the original thing you agreed with was wrong you say "maybe you were right" or something like that...
Not that this is a bad thing or anything... its just that you dont really post much of your own thoughts... it mostly is agreeing with other people (or spamming SAR )
sorry EmAn... you dont get my vote...
as for my vote? I'm still mulling it over... if matsu wasnt such a damned "apple must get better specs" kind of poster lately I would probably choose him... but im still not sure... just posting my preliminary thoughts on the subject...
P.S. pscates... why do you get to make the rules?

Nah, I'm really not. Just a harmless joke I know plenty of fellow AIers that deserve it more than me.
Thought provoking, well argued, and enormously patient with all of us who don't have the same level of technical expertise.
My 2¢

Masker, piss off.
The "rules the year I won"? I don't know. I didn't even know I won until somebody told me. Someone - can't remember who - started the thread and everyone simply voted (unlike NOW).
Over the course of 2 or 3 pages, I ended up with the most.
Believe me, I was more shocked/confused than anyone.
Paul, I'm not "making the rules". I'm suggesting some guidelines, but seeing how it's my post and my idea to revive the thing, I felt I should lay down a few parameters (I don't think asking for the names to be in bold, vote only once, etc. is very heavy-handed or bossy of me). Hell, I even outright asked people to submit ideas or to help iron out the specifics.
Problem is, that's ALL they're doing. Nobody seems to want to actually nominate, so never mind...
Mods, lock this thread at will...it's going nowhere fast.
The competition is tough though... lots of great people on these boards.
KIDDING.
Xidius is all she claims to be and possibly more, I'm sure. Heck I didn't even refer to her as a "chic" like I did Fran that one time! That says something right there....
As for my vote, I'm torn between three or four people. Guess I'll have to do some AI archeology today and figure it out.

Or much easier. Send out a mail to those people with bribe suggestions.
Screw it - I nominate <a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com/view.php3?date=2001-02-23" target="_blank">Charles.</a>
