military service?
some thread ey?
1) who does?
2) why?
3) where?
4) what's it like?
for me:
1) not anymore (did 17 weeks boot camp, 4 3-week "camps" and quit because it sucked)
2) i quit because the army is a joke here. very low-tech and not very realistic.
3) in switzerland
4) overall its not to tough and you get to see the country and shoot a lot of guns

I do. United States Marine Corps. ROTC through the Navy. I'm in Boston right now, I'll be obligated to server after I finish up my degree unless I opt to drop out. I'm not on a scholarship, so they don't care as much...
I do it because I want to serve my country. Sounds lame, but it makes me feel like I'm giving something back. I'm proud of it, it has taught me to be a better person; more motivated, dedicated, and confident.
Plus, we get to fire some neat weapons
On the downside... the military has ruined every personal relatoinship with a girl that ever meant a damn thing to me. As long as I am in the military, I do not see that changing. Military service requires your "job" to take priority, and it does. It is asking a lot of a woman to go through that.
My last relationship... I was honestly going to pop the big question to her next year. We'd been together for three years, would be finishing up school by then. Well, she broke up with me, mostly because I wasn't paying as much attention to her as I used to, and she doesn't want to get back together, ever. Actually, it's a lot more complicated than that, but to try and keep this short, the Marines aren't helping me win the ladies
"if you give them wellfare you can give them military protection, too"
that was the country i was thinking about.

they have citizenship here, but can't vote. just like a territory. thats the deal, i believe...
correct me if im wrong.
how long is boot camp?
what type of service?
-Mike
that's why i said "low tech".
And there is no boot camp for officers. There is officer school. For the Marines it is called 'Bulldog'. 10 weeks long. I've been training for it for a year and a half Sounds like fun, supposedly worse than boot
It's a tough thing though, because having a woman that means a lot to me in my life is very important. I want to have a family some day... and it's difficult for that to happen if I'm going to be an infantry officer. Also, the girl I just broke up with.... only person I ever dated for over two months, she's the one I *wanted* to be with... kicking myself for screwing up
(...) and hopefully serve on a submarine

well, you have to do "your thing".
and sometimes that means letting people go.
and what does "rotc" mean?
Bulldog is Officer Candidacy School for Marines. Officers must go through OCS before they serve.
ROTC stands for: Reserve Officer Training Corps
I have prior service as enlisted from after I turned 18, just used to thinking of myself as still there.
Anyhow, I think I have an appointment with Dr. Daniel's for the rest of the evening, if you'll excuse me...
Went in enlisted (boot camp at Parris Island, S.C.) then she was stationed at Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro (in Orange County, CA). They closed the base and her squadron (she worked with an F-18 fighter squadron) moved down to Miramar Naval Station in San Diego (made famous in "Top Gun"), which was eventually converted over to a Marine air station.
Then a few years into her career, she submitted her application to OCS (Officer Candidate School) in Quantico, VA. She was accepted and we went there. Then she completed her time down in Camp Lejeune (we visited on weekends) and then, once commissioned, she was sent back out to SoCal, stationed at Camp Pedleton in northern San Diego County (right below Orange County).
Anyway, she got out a year and a half ago as a First Lieutentant. After September 11, she wanted back in and is currently a Captain, stationed at Camp Pendleton.
So I spent about six years as a military husband. I loved it, to be honest. It got us to SoCal, the Washington, D.C. area and we've done and seen things we never would have otherwise.
We're no longer married, but are the best of friends.
She loves it, for the most part. And she's very good at it. More squared-away and serious about it than lots of the guys who work under her (lots of slackers and screw-offs apparently).
Having a 17 year old Sargeant (or whatever the heck he was) screaming in my face that he was going to "rip out my eyes and skull-**** me" if I didn't do another 20 pushups kind of turned me off of the military...

He must have seen Full Metal Jacket...
