And by the way -- Gruber is a moron.
The "iPad 3" he says is coming out in September isn't an iOS tablet.
It's a tablet running OS X -- that's why Lion looks the way it does.
You heard it here first.
I am curious ... What is your basis to think Lion is the OS of choice for a tablet ... Lion is not released yet ... where is there support info that puts meaning into such a prediction?
It looks like only Apple haters are buying a non-Apple tablet this year.
That is so right. There is no way anyone other than an Apple hater would buy one of those other tablets. But I guess there was a time when the only people who bought macs were Wintel haters, and their sacrifice allowed Apple to survive to fight another day. We all are enjoying the benefits of their Wintel hatred. Who knows, maybe one of these makers of sucky Android tablets will be kept alive by the Apple hate and someday make a product that I'd actually want to buy. Stranger things have happened...
I attended a speech by Bill Gates in the 1990's that talked how the future of the personal computer is tablets. It amazes me that Apple has so blown them out of the water in that regard. Apple is on their second generation tablet now, basically owns the entire market, yet Microsoft still has not released an OS for tablets.

Apple has the first-movers advantage on their side, plus the momentum from iPhone behind them. Unstoppable.
We all are enjoying the benefits of their Wintel hatred.
I am a huge windows hater, and I've even turned down work in the past if it involves anything to do with a windows machine. I only work on Macs, and I'm one of those people who has always bought Macs way before they became popular like they are today.
Quite honestly I think these reports are a joke. Of COURSE Apple has a majority of the market! Mainly two reasons so:
1) Made the first tablet that came with familiarity to an already popular device
2) Lucrative competition hasn't had time to respond to the market
The truth is Apple has successfully poked holes in consumers wallets over and over, convincing them that they are spending less and resulting in them spending more. "Well an iPad 2 is cheaper than a Macbook I'll buy it!" (spend $500) ...1 year later... "O well I have to buy iPad 3!" (spend $500) Congratulations Apple you have successfully tricked the consumer into spending $1000 still. Another example is the App Store, "O my gosh I can buy a game for .99c, thats worth it" ... $100 later ... "there's an app for everything I love this!" ... next credit card bill "I SPENT HOW MUCH ON APPS?!?!" What we are really seeing is Apple taking advantage of ignorant people, which as from the numbers, 82% is a lot.
I personally am annoyed by several things the iOS does as a whole.
1) No UI customization (I would like this because as much as Apple thinks everyone will be happy with the same design, I am not, I would like my upcoming events on the lock screen and not have to open the damn calendar app after I unlock the device)
2) Until I default to using the search everytime, I am looking at a cluster fuck of icons even if they are in folders! I think this picture appropriately reflects how I feel
So I will PROUDLY not buy an iPad because it's not practical to being an efficient and effective tool, its a sit down and play a game toy which is good for children but those of you who consider yourselves working adults will need to grow up and get something more productive and mature and will have support for more than 3 years.
I think that concluding that Apple is taking advantage of people is a case of your giving Apple too much credit for their motivation combined with not giving people enough credit for their motivations and abilities to make decisions on how to spend their money. I suppose you could make good use of your life by crusading to enlighten people about how Apple Inc. is insidiously impoverishing them and that in return they get products that waste their time to boot.
I am glad to see that you have clearly identified your own reasons for not purchasing an iPad. Using the same clear logic, you can evaluate other options and choose which technologies you are going to spend money on that will give a good experience and bang for your buck in the long run. I think you might want to consider that what you find to be convenient and valuable might not be what others find to be convenient and valuable. I see some people using these boards add that "your mileage may vary" when stating their opinion. I think that would be a good thing to add to your post.
The way I look at the iOS interface is that it is a work in progress. Apple will probably change it as time goes by to balance peoples needs and preferences so that most people are satisfied. Doing that would lead to the greatest amount of sales and profit I think.
Quite honestly I think these reports are a joke. Of COURSE Apple has a majority of the market! Mainly two reasons so:

I can't possibly think of changing your mind about which device is best, and you are entitled to your opinion.
However, I don't understand why so many people here believe that someone has to be an "Apple Hater" to buy a non-Apple tablet. It's like saying I'm a Ford hater if I buy a Chevrolet.
The only people that stand to gain from iPad holding such a huge market share are Apple's shareholders. As consumers you lose because if there isn't competition in the market then there is no incentive for Apple to innovate and provide new features - just look at iPad 2 for evidence of that.
Quite honestly I think these reports are a joke. Of COURSE Apple has a majority of the market! Mainly two reasons so:

Wow, You make Apple look like a collection of scheming, cigar-smoking scoundrels, rubbing their greedy hands together saying to each other, "How can we dupe those idiot customers out of their money today? I know! Let's build them products they like and will use a lot!! And then let's improve the product each season, so that they buy more!!! BWAHAHAHAHA!!! Look how EEEEVILLL we are!!!"
Perhaps it has not occurred to that a lot of customers actually find these products and apps useful! Like Motorola, Dell, Microsoft, HP, etc., Apple is a public, for-profit company. They exist for the purpose of making money, and they found a good formula for making lots of money. Not by "tricking" consumers, but by making products that consumers like and want to buy. Remember, Apple conceived of and designed the iPad as a consumer product, and yet it's got the attention of hospitals, schools, businesses, enterprise, even commercial airlines. Unlike Dell, Motorola, RIM, Samsung, et al, who have been touting their tablets as "professional business" devices, Apple has not been promoting the iPad as such, and yet the professional sector has expressed a lot of interest in the iPad. That can't be reasonably chalked up to "trickery" on Apple's part.

Wah, wah, wah!
It's pretty obvious who's not being an adult here (and insulting to boot).
In case you hadn't noticed those pictures are not the same at all.
One is a sea of unrelated documents that are impossible to tell apart, ... the other is a field of app buttons, each quite easy to tell apart.
One is a result of a poor UI design that encourages clutter, (indeed it's the default state) ... the other is the result of a good UI design that enforces a bit of order.
I could go on but is it worth it talking to someone as obviously close-minded as you seem to be?
Quite honestly I think these reports are a joke. Of COURSE Apple has a majority of the market! Mainly two reasons so:
1) Made the first tablet that came with familiarity to an already popular device
2) Lucrative competition hasn't had time to respond to the market
1) Tablet PCs have been around for years, running Windows. Microsoft's entire pitch is based the familiarity. More people are familiar with Windows than iOS. By that measure, Apple is a decade late to the party, and yet the only one that most people even know about.
Other companies have had scattered tablet-like devices that failed. I recall Nokia touchscreen web-browsing-things a few years ago. (I wouldn't have wanted one if it was free...)
2) "Lucrative" means making money. That's a circular argument; they aren't lucrative because they have a small market share.
If you mean large companies with the resources to compete, you don't consider Google, Samsung, Motorola, Dell, Asus, etc. to be capable?
But if it's all about the resources, why wouldn't Microsoft also be considered, they were far bigger *and* earlier to market.
I will concede that HP and WebOS look very impressive, ans is still not released.

The problem is that too many "visionaries" (Gates included) think PC-in-a-Tablet. I think Apple's primary innovation in the iPad is recognition that legacy PC features are actually anti-features to most users and to the tablet form factor.
What are most of the biggest iPad complaints? No USB, no SD Card, no removable battery, not upgradeable, "inferior" specs, etc. These are all things that are relevant to a desktop PC, but have no mainstream use case in a tablet, and make the overall package worse.

Talk about bias and lack of objectivity!
When an iOS device outsells its competitors the haters say they're bought by ignorant sheep.
When Android outsells iOS the haters state Android is more popular than iOS.
I've found Apple products immensely useful over the years, as a shareholder I'm glad how more and more people are realising how they can be useful for them too.
So I will PROUDLY not buy an iPad because it's not practical to being an efficient and effective tool, its a sit down and play a game toy which is good for children but those of you who consider yourselves working adults will need to grow up and get something more productive and mature and will have support for more than 3 years.
I can't believe I read this post twice and looked at the picture a few times trying to reconcile your "narrative" with the picture.
You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but clearly there are many working adults who disagree with you, and find the iPad to be a very productive and useful tool.
His opinion is that consumers who buy the iPad are ignorant and have been "tricked" by Apple into buying it. He also believes the iPad is a toy for the less mature and unproductive adult.
Given this, I can't imagine many people give credence to his opinion.

Apple is on their second generation tablet now, basically owns the entire market, yet Microsoft still has not released an OS for tablets.
Quite honestly I think these reports are a joke. Of COURSE Apple has a majority of the market! Mainly two reasons so:

I will PROUDLY not buy an iPad because it's not practical to being an efficient and effective tool, its a sit down and play a game toy which is good for children but those of you who consider yourselves working adults will need to grow up and get something more productive and mature and will have support for more than 3 years.
Are you sure you are speaking English?
You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but clearly there are many working adults who disagree with you, and find the iPad to be a very productive and useful tool.
His opinion is that consumers who buy the iPad are ignorant and have been "tricked" by Apple into buying it. He also believes the iPad is a toy for the less mature and unproductive adult.
Given this, I can't imagine many people give credence to his opinion.
