today i come in and our old web server is on the fritz. it's been going bad for a while now, but we were hoping it could last another month or so until next semester, so the changeover could occur between classes. instead today it got pissy again, and i decided i was tired of keeping this POS on life support.

so instead i decide it's time to switch servers. should be easy, transparent etc. lo and behold there are problems. not a single course page works, although the department page is fine. so now i'm working like a dog trying to get everything running on the new crap. today is going to suck ass. (i'm transferring huge amounts of files now, so i have a breather)

edit: turns out through the use of very creative aliasing our web site was located in over 30 different users folders. this is a nightmare.

when and how does your job suck?

Well lets see. Last week a co-worker followed the advice of our vendor and resequenced the database with older sequencing numbers from a mock domain. Although the db is and exact copy, the copy occured 6 months ago...needless to say we had to restore (ahem I had to) from hot backup (64 gigs of live patient data) then replay archive redo logs up until a certain time ...lost 9 hours worth of charges for our hospital (not good unhappy CEO's). I have more overtime than regular time. Big check for me...new iBook for me!! And today one of the failover Cisco cabinets that connects all of our wiring closets throughout the floors (7 total and 3 offsite) went down-up-down-up-down-up so the stupid spanning tree freaked out...my AIX production server went into HA take over mode and one of the filesystems became marked as dirty had to salvage it.....all this before lunch time.

My boss is on vacation for 7 working days. Supposed to be great, right? Well, she left me with a mess. I was supposed to inoculate a 10L Bioreactor on Friday, but she scheduled me on machinery that wasn't even scheduled to be set up until yesterday, so I had to postpone that until then, which throws my 50L scale-up 4 days off schedule to Friday. Hold that thought.

I was supposed to thaw cells last Thursday, but my boss didn't tell the person with the cells that I was supposed to get them, and she didn't believe me, so we had to postpone that experiment until Friday.

My boss scheduled me to inoculate two 2L Bioreactors on Friday, but there isn't enough equipment for me, not to mention that I am inoculating a 50L Bioreactor the same day.

FRIDAY I AM SCHEDULED FOR A DAY OFF!!!!!!!!!! She didn't realize it, and just left me with this ridiculous schedule where I'm supposed to do about two days worth of work ON MY DAY OFF.

My job is great. MY BOSS SUCKS.

i don't know if this should suck or if this should make me feel good:

a customer came in with a performa 630 that crashed on him.

as i found out he bought the mac in the release-year and worked with it 'till now...

he never did anything then work on it...

i meen he didn't touch the system...

it just worked all thouse years!!!

it sucks because my company should have sold him at least 4 mac's in that time.

but it fills me with joy when i think about it.

    hehe..no

We call our production system "live data" and our mock system "test"

We have goofy names in mock like Micky Mouse and Donald Duck.

A hand full of times I've gone looking for a patient's chart only to find out that they've died.

I love mine too. Just some of the people rude and unprofessional. I'm also waiting for one of the admins to stab me in the back. I was told it's coming.

I think I'm lucky in two respects: One, I don't have to deal with "the public" and two, I'm the boss (Well, within my department.) I don't have to take any ****.

Though admins, as everyone knows, are the product of Satan. I answer to nobody within my department, and those above leave me to my own devices, but there's always admins questioning overheads, and overtime, and expenses, and asking where those forms are that were supposed to be completed by Friday (Even though it's still Wednesday.)

I'm a meat cutter and deli worker in a grocery store. For 7 years, I was only in the meat department. Believe it or not, it was great. I liked the work, and loved the customers.

2 years ago we opened the deli, and I work increasingly more in there and I HATE it! Some of the same people I got along with great become soooo annoying when they get around prepared foods!

Our main hot food is fried chicken (some deli, I know) and I hate trying to figure out how much to have ready, too much and it's wasted, too little and I run out...

Many other things I hate, I could go on and on...

    Jeff

Last week, my boss flew to the west coast, to lay off the entire staff of one of our departments.

Today, my boss got laid off.

Senior management in my company keeps telling us that our jobs are secure, and that we are the core group that the future of the company will be based around.

They said the same thing to the west coast division, and to my boss, months earlier.

I used to like my job. Then my kitchen manager screwed me over. 10 1/2 months of my life, wasted. Almost drove me back out into the woods (used to be a forester, trying to go back to school). So today I started a new job. Major pay cut, BUT... nice benefit package. Plus, guaranteed hours, which was something my last job never gave me. The food is better, as well. So we'll see...

i hayt my job mainly cause of the boringness. i get me something to do, and it takes me like an hour, or a day max. sometimes i wish they gvae me more to do, or more interesting things to do. sometimes they throw me something big, but it's often something ridiculous ("ur familiar with the OSI model right? [yea] could you re-write the networking layer? and do it in vbscript?" "not bloody likely."). i'm at school now, so i have life, alcohol and drugs to interest me, but when i'm at work that cube can get pretty ****ing monotonous. it reminds me a lot of office space, and of fight club. headless boobs carrying coffee and talking like drones. there's always something i gotta add onto my action item list too.

hopefully i'll find a huge sack of cash one day, so i can open up my own company. that, or i'll eat a bullet before i'm forty. i think drugs can hold me over till then.

    now i understand your signature

Personaly i don't deal with admins (even if our beloved governement dream to put some on our back ...) but with public.

But what made me mad is the perpetual threat to be sued. That's the only thing that can make me hate my job.

There are many, many, many times where my job essentially becomes a perfect vision of hell itself, but then again, there are times like last week when my boss drove up alongside me on a particularly bad day and told me that there had been a serious accounting error with the sizeable bonus we had received in our last paycheck.

It was approximately 50% less than what we were supposed to receive.

Tomorrow we will see the other half.

Even though the work can be very unappealing (and downright hazardous to my health) and the hourly rate is not fantastic, I still like the sizeable bonuses they give out up to 4 times a year.

If we meet certain conditions at the end of the quarter, they calculate 20% of our total pay for that quarter, and tack that on to the next paycheck.

Though, I am still looking to find another job early in 2003. I want to find something I truly enjoy and doesn't find me walking through the office, being pulled aside by various people (managers) who tell me I am totally over-qualified for my job and I should seriously get a major promotion. (which won't happen because there are NO openings in my region right now.)

You get that in France huh? I guess I had only read of that as a real problem in British Common Law coutries like US, UK, Down Under ect. I didn't think people in France tossed that around like they do here?
