Great.. but i celebrate it far more often!! Like when the wallet is simply empty.. so i extend it to a buy nothing-week!!
I guess it is an attempt to remember that the world is not only commercial and we are not only what we buy.
So, i celebrate it.. when i feel like or when i have to.. <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />
perhaps these day i will not buy anything, but it will be only hazard and it will mean nothing.
Buying is not everything in life, but these day is clueless.
We have also in France (under the previous governement) a day without car. It was stupid and solve nothing. Just bring troubles to people who tried to go to work.
brilliant...

So, by not buying anything on one day of the year, you prove that you don't rely on capitalism and consumerism? Putting off your Christmas shopping until November 30 proves nothing.

True, one day is nothing. Have a wallet with no money and you will have a buy nothing week or month... i prefer celebrating buy nothng-moth in december.. = save the nerves from christmas shopping..
but thats not the point.
nov. 29th is the biggest shopping day of the year, thats why buy nothing day is on the 29th.
the purpose is more to get the message of overconsumption and materialism out to the masses, by making a potent stand on the biggest shopping day of the year the originators(and practicers) hope to let those who go to malls and have shopping sprees know that there is more to life than buying things.....or at least I think thats whats up
nov.29th isn't the biggest shopping day by chance...it was designed to be, notice how all the best sales happen on the 29th and are only valid for that one day? advertisements telling people to buy their holiday gifts early...its not an accident.

"The average North American consumes five times more than a Mexican!"

The sentence above isn't necessarily false, but it's damned funny. It's stylistically retarded.
The average retard...
Oh, and I love my capitalist amenities!

I consume.
other then that, i didnt buy anything
The parking structure near the Palo Alto Apple Store was sidewalk chalked all over. Every "Small Car" parking space had "still pollutes" in chalked on it. Oh, and the comparison of consumers to Nazis was a nice touch.

While my own lifestyle is quite frugal and I find the contemporary frantic sought of acquisition and possession rather futile, if others feel it suits them it's fine by me.
I find that whole anti-consumerist activism as misplaced as consumerist frenzy itself, just as obesity and diet-craze are symptoms of the obsession with food in prosperous societies enjoying abundance.
But here again, if that suits you, it's fine be me.
