They came out with an Edmunds retrospective/box set a few years back, with pretty much all his albums and songs on there.

I came THIS CLOSE to getting it, but never did.

    He's great.

    He's the fourth Stray Cat!

I like "In Praise of Christmas"

A lot of people sing this song. And like every version of it.

But Lorenna McKennit's version is my favourite

Bryan Adams has version that's as good as anybody's. This is just one of those basic, straight ahead, rock-a-billy classics that everyone likes to play.

But this time I've got a great reason for resurrecting this rather than starting a new thread.

First of all, there are a lot of good recommendations here, and it's the right time of year.

But also, near the end of this thread I had strongly recommended a record called "Christmas: A Touch of Bossa Nova". Well, I lost my copy sometime in 2001 or 2002 and I've been searching for it unsuccessfully every Christmas season since.

    Unsuccessfully, that is, until today.

Tonight by cross-referencing the artists, I've found the same record, reordered and re-released under a different name, on iTunes.

So here it is: The best Christmas record ever. In my opinion. Well, Eddie Higgins and Mannheim Steamroller and the original "Very Special Christmas" get honorable mentions.

Christmas For Anyone? (US iTunes Store)

Oh, and can a mod move this to "Apple Outsider" please?

    Mary, Did You Know?

I'm going to listen to several versions...

    Thanks!

"Ho, Ho, Ho and a bottle of Rum", by Jimmy Buffett

Celebrating the winter solstice has been around for way more than 2000 years, so I don't really get into the "magic virgin-born baby" songs so much ... or perhaps I'm just feeling cynical.

    Yes, that's a good one.

Probably my favorite is "O Holy Night"... certainly one of the most moving songs ever written.

Another is "Hark the Herald Angels Sing". The third verse is Christianity in a nutshell.

I could name a bunch more but I won't. Suffice to say some of the best music ever written was around this one event. Not a carol but Handel's "Messiah" is one of the best ever.

Well, when you think about it, Mary was the most famous adulteress ever. I mean, evidently, she had a sexual affair with God (or was it a rape?) before she had even had sex with her husband.

I get a kick out of subtly reminding the religious teachers at my schools that Joseph was Jesus' stepfather (many of them still tell kids he was Jesus' daddy, and many of the kids assume so). But I'm respectful, so I leave it at that.
