I think the UI changes are a reflection of not just unifying both platform OS's but making the UI simpler for possibly a resolution independent UI that has been rumored in the past. But who knows. It just seems like to me that making the UI on both OSX & iOS simpler and less glossy/ aqua-ish etc would make a vector based UI easier to design.

I think this is the big win here. There have been a huge influx of iOS developers out there, so if all of the sudden it gets to the point to where all it takes is changing the target from iOS to OS X, without any code changes (or better yet, a true Universal Application of iOS/OS X same build), now you have the HUGE Win!!

sorry guys but safari has become pretty boring, and a bit of a dog, I hate to say it but google is way more tempting the way things are.

Put tabs on top, lose that all monochromatic flavour, make tabs close en masse easily like chrome, try optimizing it so extensions dont slow it down, etc. etc.

I don't see any flair with safari any more, icab and chrome are easily surpassing it.

Chrome is great. Probably the most influential piece of desktop software released by any company in the past 5 years. For several reasons though I keep coming back to Safari. Well, I don't like Google for one. I don't like the way they never ask you for permission. But more importantly for me, I prefer the design of Safari.

Four things Safari needs to do which Chrome does better is make it so when closing many tabs in succession you don't have to move the mouse cursor. This is the single best feature of Google Chrome. It's literally the best thing ever. Make a better Safari Extensions Gallery. Add a button for managing Safari Extensions outside of Preferences on the toolbar. And make a much simpler and better designed - with less design - Top Sites view. Top Sites has to be the most un-Apple like abomination I have ever seen.

This should be the default setting imo. Also, the poser who thought it should be right there when you right click may be onto something, why not have it show when you mouse over definition, the way spotlight acts in Lion.

Is Apple going to add a more expansive GPU acceleration engine to Safari? I haven't heard a word on it. Every other big browser has it (or at least has a beta with it, I think).

Agree, there waiting for 180ppi monitors. Then they can just double fonts in both directions and pixel double everything else. Then they can have applications be resolution aware, and for those they wont pixel double but fonts will still be double doubled. It's fonts that most people want at higher ppi and it should only be two or three more years before monitor makers will be able to make them in large sizes instead of only iPad sizes.

Opentype and Postscript are vector fonts. They'll scale automatically.

I just wish Apple would make Safari download as fast as the "Speed Download" add on does for Safari. It almost doubles my download speeds. Best money I've ever spent. I just can't figure out why I had to spend money on something Apple should implement for free.
