Why would they do that? Did it install trojans or other malware? Did it phone home?
No, it was a copyright violation. The iTunes store is incompatible with GPL license, and one of the VLC contributors complained. Personally, I think that individual's motivations might be suspect, but it was his legal right.
Make sense. You did purchased the app and Apple must have maintain the link and keep all apps as a measure of security, audit and historical data. As for your user data for example game saves, ask your developer. Apple does not keep record as it is classified as your personal data. Unless you're willing to give up that, no chance? I thought so....
I however, find this feature to have their negative points too for example, they're some apps so bad that I don't want it to come out on my list ever, the one you have decided to delete forever, banished from your device/computer should remain that way. At least give us the option to sever the ties so the list is clean.
...this differs from my experience. Long time ago, I bought an app called "ResistorCode", which was last updated to v2.0 on 28/01/09, and which is no longer available in the App Store. Sadly, it does not appear in my "Purchased". I checked and re-checked - nope, not there.
Same here. I've had several apps (VLC included) that weren't there when I looked. Which didn't really shock me to much until I noticed that a couple of the ones that were listed were obvious knockoffs which is why they were pulled (like the Super Mario one)
On my iPad 1 in Settings>Store the new options appear:
- Automatic Apps synchronisation and automatic books synchronisation. Music from iTunes is not allowed here, in Russia.
So this particular Options page is HTML-based, as entire AppStore??? in AppStore iCloud re-download is turned ON too.
It's kinda cool. On my iPad 2 I downloaded an app (TripAdvisor)... Then, almost instantly a message popped up on my iPhone 4 saying that you could enable Automatic apps, music etc. sync for purchases (paid and free). Indeed, it's there under Settings > Store.
Interestingly, the build number is the same (8J2 for 4.3.3) so obviously this is something Apple had prepared for by building this functionality into 4.3.3 so that they could just "flip the switch" when iCloud was announced. I don't think the Settings > Store options are HTML based. Like I said, I think this is some "hidden" feature that was activated upon iCloud being announced.
Has Apple removed this functionality? I did a search and couldn't find another thread that this fit in. I can't seem to find apps I have previously downloaded in the "Purchased" section that are no longer available like this thread says is possible.
I'm about to get a replacement iPhone and I don't want to lose the iMAME app I downloaded from the App Store when it was available along with a few other apps that are gone now. I also do not want gigs and gigs of apps wasting space on my computer, and I learned that if you sync your apps to your computer and you try to delete the copies on your computer that it will also get rid of them on your iPhone. I want to just be able to sync to the cloud like I have been doing.
So basically, I don't want to be stuck with all these iOS apps on my computer and I want to be able to put my apps that are no longer available in the store on to my replacement iPhone. Right now it is set up to backup to iCloud. Is this possible?

Why would you lose it if it's on your computer?

Huh. Given that you're in this situation, would you really call it 'wasting space'?

Is this possible?
Of course it is. Go check the instructions for this again; you're probably just missing something or using the wrong Apple ID.

Apple banned VLC media player? WTF?

Very sneaky. I like it!
