They're completely different programs for different needs.

If you are new to Mac, wait before getting any apps for photo editing and see if the included iPhoto does what you need. If it doesn't, there are several options.

Get your mac, import some photos, see if iPhoto does what you want. If it doesn't, come back here or check out the App Store; there are several good apps out. Many are very reasonably priced.

Some apps, like Adobe's creative suite, are quite inexpensive for students, but you will have buy somewhere other than the App Store.

I was looking at the adobe creative suite, it's like $500 for the student/teacher edition which is still a little pricey for me.

Wow. I hadn't checked in a few years. Last time I bought I upgraded from a teacher's edition to a non-educational standard (changed jobs and lost eligibility) and it was a pretty penny. A few years later, and Adobe CS is gone from my newest machine, likely never to return.

As I said, check out iPhoto to see if it does what you need. If it doesn't, then consider other apps.

Anyway, you are at the beginning of an adventure. Good luck.

BTW, welcome to Mac, and to AI.

Have you decided on what model you are going to buy? I realized now that we went off on apps when you first queried about laptops.

I'm looking at the MacBook Pro 13". My brother was just home last weekend visiting and that's what he has. I got to play around on it for a little. So much smoother than my PC.

Good choice, and good that you got some actual hands on time with it.

The 13" would have plenty enough hard drive space right? Or should I look into the 15"?

Quick update on my first post. That site Studentrate that I found my cash back deal on now offers 4% cash back on all Apple products from the Education store.
