That's... that's... oh my.
You know, I was going to tell you that my favorites are Garamond and Futura, plus maybe Univers, but Garamond is overexposed, Univers is my firm's official font (Univers Condensed somethinerother), and I am obviously don't know what I'm talking about.
Back in the day, Palatino was the best out there, and of course Helvetica. Today, I tend to search or peruse various font sites, but I can't make myself pay the money for new fonts. It's a bit overwhleming to decide whether one font is worth $80-$300 or whether the font that looks only slightly different would be worth the price. Plus I'm afraid that it wil just be a flavor of the week.
Of the fonts that I have that aren't included in OS X by default, I like Impact, Stone, Bodoni, Stencil (the old Corbu lettering font), and Myriad.
you can get in depth with your fonts if you like, but for me I like myrIiad, I use trajan a lot tho, as well as gill sans, A lot of Gill Sans too I guess, but way too much helvetica !bagh! talk about beautiful but boring! now gadget thats where its at
I'd have to to have lived all time to really form an opinion for that time span.
But I consider as ?way up there? the handwritten font of the 8th century Antinopolis Papyri N°.47, of the 10th century Keter Aram Tzova and that of 1222 Miqra de Talitla (Toledo), this last one is reflected by the print font used for the 1492 Napoli Tanakh.
I often prefer Optima for Latin sans-serif usage (Arial, Helvetica, or Verdana aren't all that bad but are so common).
Otherwise I'm quite biased toward these, although I don't often use all of them:
Koren
Ra'anana
Bodoni
Dafna
Baghdad
Tamrurim
STFangsong
KufiStandardGK
and of course Apple Garamond, which I admit, is my favourite font of the present time.

Serifs are the little thorns and tails that you get on fonts like Times.
In day's gone by, these serifs allowed the eye to skip from letter to letter at speed.
So, fonts like Helvetica/Arial are said to be Sans Serif (without serifs).
On an entirely different note - Syntax, now there's a quality font I haven't used in a while. Anyone out there a fan of Imago (Berthold) and Vectora (Adrian Frutiger)?

Garamond
Bookman
Futura
Univers
Bodoni
Eurostile
Gill Sans
Frutiger
Trade Gothic
Copperplace (OK, it's overused)

Avant Garde (sans)

by the by, what is "serif", and "sans-serif"? (sans is french, for 'without', or something, right?)
In day's gone by, these serifs allowed the eye to skip from letter to letter at speed.

I'm a Verdana man, m'self.
