Looking for new music.

Lately I am finding myself not too interested with music that is being played on the radio. I am in the mood for music that can't be heard on the radio or mtv. Any suggestions? For example: Yesterday I found a Jazz band named Bad Plus. These guys are great but I've never heard them on any of my local stations. Another band I found by browsing the CD collection at Borders is Apples in Stereo.

A good way to find some indie music is MP3.com online.

I want to expand my music listening horizon. What do you listen to?

Afghan Whigs (one of my faves). If you want I could set up a Direct Connect hub for you sometime and you could "borrow" them.

EDIT: Btw, my music is HIGH quality - encoded with LAME at 224 kbps . Sure, it's bigger, but it makes a difference if you're listening to songs on headphones.

Here are the best bands in my iTunes library - ask me about any of them. (ignore the numbers bext to them, I couldn't easily get rid of them.) EDIT: I'll bet you that 80 percent of this stuff isn't on the radio. Since you're a fan of Apples In Stereo, I would suggest anything else from the Pete and Pete tv show soudtrack (Apples in Stero music appeared on there several times <a href="http://www.cannit.com/peteandpete/musicpage.htm"; target="_blank">http://www.cannit.com/peteandpete/musicpage.htm</a>; ).

Actually, Direct Connect is a little weird, I'm not completely sure how to use it, so how about using Limewire? <a href="http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=10275&db=mac"; target="_blank">http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=10275&db=mac</a>; Sure, it's not the best, but it'll get the job done. I'll put all of my music up and you can download whatever you please. I'll post my username sometime this week.

I thought I'd post this before I went to bed:

If I were to buy some albums (if I didn't already own them) I'd get 1965 and Black Love by The Afghan Whigs. I promise you excellent music beyond any of the bands you hear on the radio - and that's the honest truth ( I couldn't tell you how much I love this band). If you like that, I have more suggestions. But, for now, spare a few bucks and buy these EXCELLENT albums - they are among my all-time favorite albums.

A few metal bands for those interested:

<a href="http://www.ramzet.com"; target="_blank">Ram-Zet</a> - Incredibly original, psycho, and beautiful metal. I cannot get enough of these guys and girls. They have harsh male vocals, clean female vocals, violins, piano, heavy drums, and some sweet guitar riffs.

<a href="http://www.sentenced.org"; target="_blank">Sentenced</a> - Finnish somewhat melodic depressive metal band. All of their albums after Amok tend to be about the dark and depressing side of life.

<a href="http://www.LacunaCoil.it"; target="_blank">Lacuna Coil</a> - Italian goth-metal band with female and male vocals. This band can do no wrong.

<a href="http://www.winds.nu/"; target="_blank">Winds</a> - A jaw dropping Norwegian neo-classical, progressive metal band. Beautiful, heavy, impressive. Gotta love the tasteful strings useage.

<a href="http://www.mydyingbride.org/"; target="_blank">My Dying Bride</a> - One of the best and most well known doom metal bands. While they no longer have their trademarked violin, the band continues to amaze me. Emotional is the key word here.

    <a href="http://www.archenemy.net/"; target="_blank">Arch Enemy</a> - Yes folks, women can indeed do death metal voices just as well, if not better than the men. Check this out: <a href="http://www.centurymedia.de/century/media/videos/ravenous_high.wmv"; target="_blank">http://www.centurymedia.de/century/media/videos/ravenous_high.wmv</a>;

    Ehh, enjoy.

If you like jazzy / funky music, definitely check out Liquid Soul. A good album would be "Make Some Noise".

    Seriously, check it out.

I would agree here. I haven't listened to commercial radio in 15 years.

You get a wide variety of musical genres on college radio. And hardly any advertising. Some colleges offer streaming radio.

    I listen to <a href="http://www.wprb.com/"; target="_blank">WPRB FM</a> online sometimes.

If you like Apples in Stereo try listening to The Flaming Lips, Neutral Milk Hotel, The Choral, Guided by Voices, Wilco, Sonic Youth, The Shins, and Cake.

Also listen to WOXY a radio station out of Ohio for great alternative rock. They have a stream under the Alt/Modern Rock section of iTunes radio.

Check out Appleseed Cast (no relation to Apples in stereo), bright eyes, Wilco, Beudah for indy, and I like some other bands too, The Donnas (god they're hot), unwritten law, and Finch. If you like wierd music like me, I love working to music thats dub or ambient techno, from the likes of Tosca, Boards of canada, Kid Loco really good stuff. Check em all out!

Well, here are some of my favorite artists:

-The Dandy Warhols (Alternative rock, sort of)

    -Ween (rock...ish?)

    -Catch 22 (punk/ska)

    -Reel Big Fish (Ska)

    -Alien Fashion Show (Neo swing)

    -Bush (rock)

    -Moby (techno, sort of)

-The Pettit Project (alt. rock, sort of like Weezer from what I've heard)

-The Glenn Miller Band (Old time swing)

    -Dave Matthews Band (mellow rock)

-The Rent Soundtrack (a nice medly of different styles. I'm compelled to reccommend this one... being that I am a rent-head after all )

    -John Meyer (mellow rock)

    -Heavy Vegetable (alt. rock)

    -Saves the Day (alt. rock)

    -Erykah Badu (mellow R&B)

    -Silverchair (Austrailan grunge rock)

Unfortunately, I don't know the artists of some of my favorite music, so I can't reccommend it. It's all on a mix cd for the soundtrack of a recent play I was working on. If I can come up with any more names, I'll post them
