Hardly, compared to digital zoom. It's a much preferable option for a point and shoot. However on a smartphone it's less desirable due to the added thickness it would require.

What the hell is that supposed to mean? So, you're a "pro" with your 1D, but you come across as a jackass.

Down under meaning Australia, I guess.

OmniVision has given very weak guidance for this quarter, which is a strong indication that they have lost a big customer.

Apple gave lower guidance but, since they are well Apple, it was largely ignored. Then CRUS lowered guidance so it wasn't a big surprise OVTI did as well. If your biggest customer lowers their guidance it only makes sense for you to lower yours as well. OVTI only lowered guidance for next quarter it wasn't very weak. If they lost the 5 they would have lowered much more.

Also with all the disruptions from the earthquake in Japan, Sony would be very challenged to to meet Apple's ramp up and supply needs.

It's people like this that drive me crazy.

Ah, yes, that was obvious. However, following a put-down, it comes across as paternalistic/condescending.

Before you start bashing, I know if i want a real camera I should buy a real camera, but how awesome would it be if apple figured out zoom.

I used to have a Sony DSC-T1 which was very thin and had an internal Optical zoom. Very nice camera with a great lens and it was 5mp

Pity my sister took it on holiday and managed to damage the LCD...

And yes, it will also degrade the image compared to a prime lens. Unless, of course, you're comparing a good zoom to a crappy prime.

Oops..you're right...I must have just woken up when I typed that.

However, I don't see how you can have an optical zoom in an iPhone or the like. I do think I saw some accessory maker who makes some kind of clamp so that you can use regular 35mm or DX-sized lenses on an iPhone, but IMO, it's kind of ridiculous to attach such a large lens to a camera phone. You might as well just carry a camera body.

I'm certainly willing to 'wait and see', and I don't argue with quality results, but I'm suspect about adding megapixels to a small sensor like that used in the iPhone. Photographs taken in bright light will probably be better, but photos taken in limited light will probably be far worse, due to the noise, in spite of technology improvements.

It's simply for the people who know nothing about digital photography and think higher megapixels means better quality. It's just being done to check off a line on a list.

Count me as one of those not looking forward to a higher density sensor. Worse low-light performance, bigger files, etc.

You clearly do not understand how imaging technology works. Different types of cameras have different SIZES of image sensors. Smaller sensors with the same megapixel rating will have smaller photosites which means their ability to capture light (e.g. detail) is diminished and the number of artifacts such as noise will be increased.

A full-frame DSLR has a bigger image sensor than a mid-level DSLR which has a bigger image sensor than a compact digital camera which has a bigger image sensor than the camera in a phone.

    Read this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_sensor_format

Apple is not putting a 24MP sensor in the iPhone because the image quality would be crap due to the small sensor size. Apple is aiming for a sweet spot. I am sure they tested several different sensors, and the one they chose will provide excellent quality for being in a phone.

Next time, it might be wise to educate yourself before you denigrate a product due to your lack of knowledge. Pretty lame.
