Let's see. AT&T is $7 per month which is $168 over a 2 year period - plus there's a $200 deductible.
Apple is $69 with a $49 deductible.
They're not completely the same since AT&T covers loss and Apple doesn't, but it's hard to figure how you can look at those numbers and conclude that Apple's is expensive.
Accidental damage on your homeowner's insurance isn't even comparable. Most people have a $1000 deductible on their homeowner's - so an iPhone wouldn't be covered at all.
I'm from the UK so prices are a bit different. My current home insurance was about £220 (accidental damage, loosing an item etc irruspective of where it is was about £40 which took it to £220 from £180 for items up to the value of £4000). The amount you would have to pay on a claim was around £80.
So in the UK at least these things don't make much sense. Unfortunately most people never think of claiming on their home insurance for loosing a phone, they pay for it to be on their home insurance and then forget about it.
The question remains - is Apple discontinuing the $199 swap/replacement fee for damaged iPhones? As long as Apple still allows you to pay $199 to replace a damaged iPhone, I think the Applecare+ is a bad deal. If you use a decent case on your iPhone, there is a decent chance you will never need a replacement of any kind, thus, saving yourself at least $99. In the event you do have significant damage, you can get the iPhone replaced for $199. With Applecare+, you are still going to have to come up with a total of $150 to get your phone replaced. So, you are only saving about $50. I suppose, if you are someone who will end up needing two replacements, then the calculus is $400 vs. $200 and then it starts to become more worth it, but, again, two replacements? You have to both not have a case and be pretty reckless with your phone in my opinion for that to ever be necessary.
Of course, if Apple is discontinuing the $199 swap fee, and you now have to pay full price, then Applecare+ is a bargain.
My daughter dropped her verizon iPhone it broke the glass on front but she could still use it, 2 months later when we had the money she went in to exchange it and they gave her a new one free. Also she took her MacBook pro in when the cpu died and she had a small dent in the top part of the monitor they didn't think the cpu would be under warranty because of the dent but they not only put in a new cpu but replaced the whole monitor part of the computer free and to top it all off she had a paper for her college class that she needed the next monday so they took all the data off the computer and put it on a firewire hard drive for her and they only charged her for the hard drive and no labor. That is a good company.
I had the same experience. I fell into the pool with my phone. After some messing around, I got it working, but the camera didn't work. I could live with that and didn't want to spend $200, so I held onto it. Eventually, the home button started requiring multiple key presses, so I decided to spend the money and swap it. I took it to the Apple Store and they gave me a new one free.
I think its a great plan. now only if they would let iPhone users unlock their phone after a 2 year contract I would be very happy. I'm tired of switching to my unlocked BB when i go to Europe just put in a local simm card.
Didn't know they they still sell locked iPhones in The States. In Europe it's pretty common for telco's to sell them unlocked, even though they are subsidised.
Wow they replaced the whole monitor for free? I wonder if this courtesy is only offered in the U.S.? I had the same dent problem for my 6 months old 17" MBP but they wouldn't repair it for free here in Thailand.
There may have been other issues involved with the monitor. Like they had a run of too many displays going bad on that particular production run so they covered the laptop under that. Yours may not have been in a similar situation

Sounds like no on bothered to check for liquid damage and perhaps you didn't tell them. Thus you gamed the system. Or you did tell them and the genius was in a good move and gave you a one time 'hsit happens' freebie
