i'd say close to 0% were sold in the USA. the USA didn't get the SGS 2 until last month. i've read it was a popular phone around the world and was sold unlocked almost everywhere.
This is the interesting angle: It was a transition quarter for both Apple and Samsung.
Shipped != sold. Atari shipped 5 million copies of ET for their Atari 2600. Guess where nearly every copy is at now?
You do realize that reviewers consider the iPhone 4 and 4S to be fragile because of the glass front and back. I dropped (well, my toddler) my iPhone 3GS numerous times against concrete and the case suffered numerous scuffs, but still intact. If my iPhone 4S suffered the same treatment, it would likely be shattered in under week. There is a reason the industrial design did not catch on with the rest of the cell phone industry.
Now that others have released smartphones with kevlar backs, I wonder if Apple will ever adopt it.
I like competition, keep it up Samsung! (just don't be so blatant in your copying). Keep Apple on its toes, so they can keep making stuff that makes me happy.
Stop making such stupid posts or I'm going to remove them. You are working very hard to troll lately, and it's got to stop.
Over time I have started to hate these kinds of threads. Its like a feeding frenzy on both sides. Its always the threads about another company doing well that sends the Apple faithful into panic and they feel the need put down every other company as if there is only room for one company to do well. On the flip side you have the guy above your post just throwing in fresh meat.
I think we needs a folder in the forum called "Group Therapy"

I'm not sure that panic has anything to do with it. There is quite a lot of anti-Samsung sentiment around right now, but that is hardly surprising and not really related to any successes that they have had recently. Quite the opposite in some ways. Some of that has spilled over into this thread for sure, but questioning the relative sales numbers seems legitimate, which is the bulk of this discussion. I don't think anyone who supports Apple has much to feel panicked about in the current market.

What's your point? Apple will always use a material someone else does or not use a material because someone else does? How about: Apple will use the materials that best serve their purpose for making the devices they think are best. They have been using glass front panels *gasp* since the first iPhone despite the opposition saying that is stupid and most competitors following their lead, and still using the external antenna *double gasp* despite the claims that such a design was stupid, would require a recall of eery single iPhone 4 on the market, and a revamp of the next iPhone in a much shorter time than usual.
Seems to Apple does what it thinks is best for their product, not simply following or eschewing a tech or material based on some petty decision.
Reminds me of the iPod killers a few years back...
... the "in stores" is probably the same "bulk shipment" deals that are used to fluff up sales of some Political Hacks books. They get on the New York Times bestseller lists, then the bulk order quietly goes back and gets distributed. Who knows if next quarter there will be the same number of units?
For comparison, iPhones don't exactly sit on shelves.
There are probably big discounts for a bulk order -- so it's going to look GOOD for Samsung for exactly 1 Quarter.
iPhone 5 comes out, and there will be yet a new benchmark set for features. The voice recognition and location sensing mics are going to probably be a game changer as well.
You cannot compare any unsubsidized price to Apple. Apples and oranges!
IPhones are the cheapest phones on the market. At any carrier. BOGO Android phones require a layout of hundreds, and you need to subscribe to two service plans: That is NOT free.
The iPhone is free. No cash needed. No waiting for a rebate. No nothing; just free. The iPhone is the absolute best choice for all the world's cheapskates.
You my friend might be the dumbest person I have ever seen post on here. I'm sorry if that offended you but Damn you stupid
Samsung does not care how many are sold from the stores. They care how many phones the stores buy from them....which is shipped.
Uh, I think unsold product may be subject to returns from the big box stores, so it does not matter how many are shipped. The important figure is how many are sold.

Actually, that is not entirely true and depends on the contract with the big box store. The problem lies in the next quarter because if the big box hasn't sold much of the previous shipment then it won't order much if any more. This puts a big question mark on the handset makers numbers: Why the drop off? Was sell through bad? Were there a lot of customer returns?
My question is what does Samsung count as a smartphone? They just announced this week that they have sold 30M Galaxy branded smartphones (since April last year - S and S2). Even if that were quite heavily weighted towards the last quarter, i doubt that more than 10M would have come in the past 3 months. What are the other smartphones counted?
A few WP7 (not many of those), some Bada (where? Korea?) and probably a bunch of crap like the Intensity 2 which has apps, can go to FB or twitter etc. but is not remotely in the same league as any proper smartphone from one of the top 5 ecosystems (Apple, Android, BB, WP7, Symbian). I get the feeling that this is an Apples to raisins comparison.
20M Galaxies... I think not. (Unless someone with some facts can jump in).
They sell at least 23 models, from the good, to the bad, to the ugly.
Now, if it was just two models of the Galaxy S, that would be impressive. But as it stands, all this is is Android market-flood.
Remember: Apple achieves what they do with only one or at most two models of phones. Not over 20. Apple doesn't ship low-end bare-bones commodity-ware.

That remains to be seen. The iPhone is the cheapest smartphone on the planet. Nobody beats Apple in ANY race, including a race to the bottom.
Hell, Apple is at the finish line already! Apple reached absolute rock bottom before anybody else!
There is NO phone cheaper than the iPhone, not nowhere. All the cheapskates are now flocking to Apple. Apple has WON!

Yeah - but as I said - I can usually follow his arguments even if I don't always agree with them. Just seems completely off today.
Sorry about that. Not all of them can be gems.

Maybe not. Maybe he just left out a comma: "Damn you, stupid".
Flimsy eh? Square Trade drop tested the IP4s and Galaxy II S. Guess which one survived in better shape?
Yep, the flimsy one.

Just as a plastic dish won't break when dropped and a glass one will, despite the glass one feeling sturdier.
