I have an iPad and an iPad 2 already, but if Apple can manage the Retina display on the iPad 3, I'm just going to have to buy it (and sell the original). Reading comfort would be improved so immensely and the quasi-physical experience of the interface would be strengthened. It would improve almost every use of the device except audio.
If Apple can't make the Retina work, I'm not sure what features would entice me. Well, one feature which I don't expect anytime soon is a precise stylus input that doesn't interfere with the smooth multitouch. I can't imagine a scenario in which that would be released by Apple, but it would also get me to stand in line on day 1. Man, I'd pay $200 for an overlay if it could make that functionality happen somehow. Problem is most people don't care.
Oh yeah! There is another feature that I still dream of. That Apple patent that suggested a moldable screen that could raise up and lower programatically. That would be insane. Imagine games being able to raise up a button and control pad on the screen so you can feel the controls, for instance. Sadly, it seems completely impossible to me right now! lol.
Considering the difficulty the suppliers are having trying to manufacture a "retina" style screen for an iPad, I really doubt the validity of the story.
Now if they are launching something along the lines of a 1600x1200 screen resolution, that would be doable.

So you're doubting the validity of this rumor because of a previous rumor of unknown validity?
Here's an idea - try getting your facts somewhere other than a rumors site.
Call it nitpicking if you like, but the statement "...Apple has tasked its suppliers with the development of two tablet projects..." would mean that Apple is no longer doing its own designs. And I don't believe that for a nanosecond.
First of all, "development" does not have to imply design. Ramping up or tooling up for manufacturing on the scale of what Apple needs is a development on its own. Don't forget - Apple does rely on 3rd parties to develop components such as the Retina Display.
Second, it is not true that Apple designs everything in-house. The iPod, for example, was an out-sourced project.

Now if they are launching something along the lines of a 1600x1200 screen resolution, that would be doable.
Wait and see.
Bigger question: quad core and 1gb+ ram?
If they go to quad core, I wonder if they will start allowing multiple concurrent foreground apps to run. But that would require a major iOS design, which is unlikely given that iOS5 was pretty major.
Second, it is not true that Apple designs everything in-house. The iPod, for example, was an out-sourced project.
That is only partially true. The iPod was designed inhouse, they used some PortalPlayer and Pixo helped design the interface under Jobs' direct supervision. The entire iPod was not outsourced tho.
Agreed. Stockpiling the iPad 3 while holiday shoppers are lined up for iPad 2s would not be good PR. Which might be part of the reason they got off that January Macworld schedule.
Agree. January is kind of an awkward time to ship new products.
If it takes longer to build the iPad 3 due to yield rates on the new high res screen it would make sense to start building and stockpiling them well ahead of any launch in March. You can't just build 2m units overnight. Factor in the Chinese new year in Jan 2012 and you need to plan well ahead.
Would you rather have to wait 3 months to get one after launch like in previous years? No, neither would I.
As for screen size, they could increase it from 9.7" to 10.1" without having too much of an impact. Just make the border around the screen smaller.

I didn't say it was entirely outsourced. I said it was an outsourced project. Some of you live for finding the smallest flaws in other people's posts, and stoop so low as to manipulate other people's meaning to suit your purpose. Surely you have other sources of triumph in life that such a futile exercise is not necessary?
If I were inclined to behave like you, I'd say "Under Jobs' direct supervision, my butt. Jon Rubinstein would have a thing or two to say about such an abominable statement". But I don't stoop that low
Now he suddenly wants to stockpile 2 million iPad3 this year? At least 2-3 month before launch?
Technically: TSMC is the only foundry with 28nm online. AMD will start to sell 28nm cards i December. How is Apple going to get their hands on 2 million A6 processors in 28nm?
I know about the Samsung 28nm reports. The problem is that you need to design 2 different SoCs to produce at TSMC and Samsung. Since we know that Apple have taped out a chip at TSCM and got back test wafers mid summer: what chip would this be if its not a 28nm A6?
Samsung will continue to manufacture Iphone3Gs SoC, A4 and A5.

Retina won't be that great for everything
Not a single movie/tv show support it. All have to be upscaled.
How long will it take before Apps support that resolution?
How big will the apps be?
Will for example books/magazines release multiple resolution of their content?
I love Retina, but hate upscaled stuff.
BTW. Siri will be a great selling point
+ first 28nm quod core ARM15 and possible next gen PowerVR graphics.

It's for manufacturers to connect with resellers as well as parts suppliers and to a slightly lesser degree the CE media / press to better cover these new items in their publications, blogs, broadcasts etc.
Almost nothing shown at CES is ever available the week after the show.
This is also the very reason why Apple doesn't ever attend it... They don't NEED to convince retailers to sell their wares nor do they need to make contacts with component suppliers they are big enough to make those contacts in private.
Finally, they don't need to get the attention of the press.... If Apple wants the press to show up they simply send out an invite and the press jumps on a plane on their own dime. MANY manufacturers do not have this ability and having a booth at CES is usually their most cost effective way to reach an enormous pool of press outlets.

There're TWO MILLION iPad 3s out there & they expect not ONE to leak out between now & 3Q12 ....?!?

Tim Cook. The master of inventory.

really, they are.
