People said the same thing when Apple started making mp3 players.

Google's move to mobile is perfectly understandable. They're attempting to build a moat around their core search business. They know the future is mobile and they want as many people using Google's services on the mobile web as possible. Apple would never have allowed Google to have the prominence on iOS, that it does on Android.

I'm gonna try out some tracks at 320k and see how much of a difference. Cool thing is

that if I subscribe to iTunes Match it's going to let me upload tracks even if they are

    purchased via Amazon or Google.

You could build a library of 320k songs at home and iTunes Match 256k songs for mobile devices.

    This could get pretty interesting.

Finally, somebody in these parts with a reasonable point of view.

If and when this comes to Canada, I plan on using it, because well, Apple gives me no options to use iTunes music on Android device, other than side-loading.

Nor will iTunes lose all my business. I plan on comparison shopping and buying iTunes music wherever such tracks aren't available on the Android Market (ie. Warner).

I don't see Google Music so much as a direct competitor to iTunes as much as it is an iTunes equivalent for the Android ecosystem. It was an obvious hole in the Android ecosystem that Google needed to fix.

I still don't think this is as much a challenge to iTunes as it is a challenge to Amazon.

iTunes only really serves iOS and Mac users. But Amazon is now the default music store on the vast majority of those 200 million Android devices in the wild. I would bet that Amazon has made billions in music sales off Android users, helping entrench Amazon into the Android ecosystem as the default media content provider. This ends with Google Music.

Google will now have books, movies, apps and music in Android Market. Amazon won't be the default store anywhere on Android devices anymore, save the Kindle Fire. It'll be interesting to see if Amazon is as open as Google and will allow Google Books and Google Music on to the Fire.

Not everything Google does is to compete with Apple. Sometimes, it has other competitors in its sights. To the extent that Google Music competes with iTunes, it just functions as an anchor to keep Android users inside the ecosystem. Now if Google offers a native Google Music iOS app.....that would be interesting: a way to get around the $25 iTunes Match charges. Buy music on iTunes. Put it in your Google Music locker for free. Stream from anywhere. Would Apple allow it? (It should be noted that you can do the same thing through Safari on iOS).

Just finished uploading my music. This service works great and it is free. Unlike iCloud I love being able to stream to almost any device including my iPad....

Last couple times I was on Google+, it seemed pretty dead. Seems like after an initial flurry, most of my friends (including some geeky types) have stayed on FB. And frankly I still find the Google+ interface annoying, and more cumbersome than it needs to be. (And why can people "share" with me when I don't know them - I got some porn spam that way.)

Regardless, I don't get wanting to share every detail with your "friends" - whether it's Google Music on Google+, or Spotify on FB. I don't care what my friends are listening to, and don't want them to know my every move either.

That's the key. Soooo nice to be able to know that all the Apple products we buy integrate with each other and "just work", right out of the box. I don't want to have to work at using an Android phone, let alone try to configure it to work with my PC, laptop, TV, etc.

So for me, that's why Apple is still #1 by far - by a level of magnitude. I don't have to think about it, it just does what I want.

It'd take an eternity with the brutal upload speeds WOW plans offer, all the while limiting my bandwidth available for other purposes.

There are certainly elements of iTunes Match that aren't perfect, but it's early and even with the occasional bugs and oddities, it's a pretty incredible service at a pretty reasonable price. It's not for everyone and it certainly needs to improve, but after trying Google Music out for a bit early on and seeing the full rollout today, I'm confident in the fact that sticking with iTunes Match is the best deal for me. Between Match, Spotify Premium and wonderful remote desktop apps for my 3G iPad, I don't foresee myself ever having a major mobile music need again.

And I have absolutely no problem whatsoever paying for these services at all.

If Google services weren't free, I wouldn't even consider using them. And even though they're free, I only use search occasionally and a Gmail account for "junk mail" when I have to sign up for things on the internet like this forum. I've never gotten spam or seen ads on my MobileMe/iCloud e-mail. I had no problem paying for that benefit either.

It's actually quite nice to be able to have internet-based experiences that aren't littered with bullshit. That's worth money to me.

Google will continue to be successful for some time at offering mediocre if not terrible products to people who either have terrible taste, low expectations, entitlement issues or some combination of all three and more. Google will still be financially successful in the end because all the crap services exist simply to mine data that ultimately helps to increase their ad revenue. I simply have no interest in getting overly involved in a race towards mediocrity.

That is a terrible argument. You're telling me you'd rather pay $25 a year just so you don't have to leave your computer on over night to upload all of your songs? I uploaded about 10,000 songs over the summer, which took about 25 hours total. I stopped the uploading during the day and let my computer upload them while I slept. There are a lot of reasons to use the iTunes Match feature over Google Music, but saying you'd rather pay $25/year to upload 4,000 songs vs uploading all of them for free just doesn't make sense to me. Your slant against Google is almost laughable.

Thank you King of People for letting us know about all people through your very personal interaction with a service and your personal opinions. -_-
