Im not a radiologist nor will i ever be. Surely you can think of another reason the ipad is worth 4x the price that actually matters to the average consumer. Im sure there are niche uses for both tablets that the other doesn't have. Hell, im able to watch hulu.com on my touchpad, and as far as i know (correct me if im wrong here) thats something the ipad isnt capable of. And im prettty sure hulu matters more to the average consumer than displaying xrays.

    Does Hulu Plus count?

So tell me, why is the touchpad not worth 99, but the ipad worth 500?

I havent put android on it yet, and after playing with webOS, i probably wont until at least a stable version of ICS is released for it.

I have both and the iPad is far more useful because of apps. The touchpad might have become more but it's pretty crippled without the apps.

Still for email, web surfing and watching sideloaded movies (but not netflix) it's a great deal for $99.

Even more so when android is sufficiently painless and stable enough for me to bother with.

As a note, I've seen at least one update since the firesale that made the touchpad run better. I don't know if there will be another but that was nice. An updated browser would be nice too but I guess I can put android on it if it bothers me that much.

The number of apps is actually pretty good for my use on the TP, I was pleasantly surprised for $99. I'm used to unlimited apps on my Touch, but many of these are for web content that the TP can access the regular web sites without a problem.

I use pdf and quickoffice at work, use it to take notes.

Native email, Zinio, some good news apps, facebook, accuweather, Tune In radio, enough games for my light use (Angry Birds!), web browser experience is very good, youtube, easy USB file transfer, music syncs with iTunes, I can wirelessly print to my HP printer.

Dislikes: Kindle app is barely a beta version (V 0.11) (crashy), no other good ereader apps (kobo etc), camera is awful, no video out. Not holding out hope for a Netflix app either

Yesterday we had Dick on the throne and today we're talking about TP.

It was better than the original plan: bury the unsold TouchPads next to the unsold Apple Lisas in a secret landfill. The archeologists will probably dig them up 1000 years from now and put them in a museum.

We are laughing now but I feel that this will be a repeat of the smartphone market. Apple's share will drop but it will retain the 15-20% that everyone wants. The most profitable slice of the market.

I believe the comparison with the iPod market will prove to be more accurate ...

There is indeed hope for non-iPad tablets, as long as they are catastrophic failures.

    Repeat of the smartphone market?

I didn't know that game was finished. Hell... I thought we were only in the second inning.

PS: Does the AppleTV pick up Photosteam and you subscribe to other user's Photostream with guest credentials? It might be nice for someone to see photos taken from the iPhone at some remote location on their AppleTV almost instantly. I can see consumer and business needs for this time of instant push of photos (and videos).

Yes I miss Fox sorely ...

Yep photostream and the iTunes matched music, flawlessly.

I love NPR and PBS, how do you get the latter via ATV? I'd like the BEEB too. Of course I can use iPad and mirroring ... DUH!

I don't think so. I think it's moving steady toward repeating the iPod dominance, only much faster. If they do get Retina Display (265ppi) for the iPad in early 2012 then I'd say it's definitely a done deal for the foreseeable tech future.

Android phones had the carriers to push them. The carriers could install their own crapware, and push their own music and media services, and do it all with better margins.

Tablets? Not so much. Didn't happen on the iPod Touch side of the fence, either.

The only kicker is Amazon, as they may be able to get traction by subsidizing their own hardware sales with books and music and media sales.

Yes, Netflix is one of the great bargains on the internets! I use redbox to watch the occasional relatively new release. Went to the movies to watch "Senna" the guy sitting next me pulled out a cheeseburger, fries and a coke! Sheesh! I left, with a promise to myself not to ever go back!

Can't stand hula, again, too many commercials.

As far as news! I read time, foreign affairs, the local daily paper, USA today , and the weekend editions of the FT, and WSJ...mainly for reviews of books movies and travel suggestions...

Oh and just so the post is on topic...I wouldn't buy an HP tablet...

    Best!

Staying off topic, re Netflix Streaming ... I'm working through every Star Treck ever made, in chronological order. So Voyager is first. Got to love T'Pol
