Other tablets aren't simple rectangles. An organic shape that better fits the hand could work. Sony presented a slopes design. The front doesn't have to be flat: it could have a ridge along the bezel. The bezel doesn't have to be glossy. Etc.
Apple uses a minimalist design. You mistake that for the only way to make it. Minimalism isn't the only way to design things. Look at phones: most look way different than the iPhone, which is "just a rectangle".
So the industrial tablets I used in the early nighties should have been designed differently as well since they were a rectangle? And they had a flat front.
ANd you finish off trying to say that Apple is the only companiy allowed to make a candy bar shaped phone? They were the last to the party when it came to that shape
Others have tried a similar claim before and lost.

The Nokia 7650 I had in 2002 had little icons on a screen in a grid, or is it ok for Apple to copy? (sorry, it is called inovation on this site)
The whole point of this is to teach Samesung that blantant copying is not okay, outside Ong Kong and Korea. Seriously, have you looked at the box branding, the usb/dock connector, or the icons for gods sake! I mean, does Samesung have one original thinker in their entire business? I doubt it, since it wasn't until after the iPad 2 was released that Samesung went back to the drawing board on their 10.1 in order to rip off the look and feel of the then new, iPad2.
After Samesung gets their nuts kicked up into their throat, they'll think twice about ripping off Apple again. But considering Apple is the bar by which all else is measured, that may be tough for them.
I don't want to be a blind Apple fanboy but Sammy is riding Apple's d*** on this one.
Hell, go to Wallgreens, CVS and check out their knock offs to popular, big name products. They use the same color scheme and design as the national brands we know of.
Sammy is just to lazy. I can't wait for the Apple HD tvs. You know their coming rumor or not. And watch Sammy copy those to.
That digital photo viewer only resembles the iPad on one plane in one view, not all of them. And then there is Samsung copying iOS for their UI layer. I think Samsung is clearly a KIRF, but I don't think any one of these listings are an issue, a right for Apple, and really just makes Apple look silly.
KIRF is everywhere. Go to the flea market and you'll see that junk all over the place!! Fake Jordan's, Dolche and Gabana etc.

I misspoke when I wrote KIRF. Samsung is ripping off but not trying to pass their wares as the brand name product.
I don't go to flea markets but I have seen plenty of KIRFs in NYC. I wonder how much these fakes affect the brand name companies. I don't think most KIRF buyers would be customers due to cost but it does dilute the brand's haut monde by seeing so many of these knocks offs.
And when exactly did all of those phones start having a flat slab of glass with a black border and rounded corners.
About the same time that the iPhone was originally announced. More to the point, shortly after.
What is your point? LG prada had all those elements and it came out before iphone. iphone copied LG prada then?
It's a touch screen phone, so of course they will all have a flat slab of glass for the front face. The color black is used for the vast majority of consumer electronics and its just common sense that you would put rounded corners on a device that you keep in your pocket and hold in your hand.

You completely missed my point on phones. The VAST majority of android phones look nothing like the iPhone, despite sharing several design elements.
Also, the majority of tablets don't look like the iPad. The Playbook doesn't, nor does the Nook Color.
Use some common sense. Samsung is clearly trying to emulate Apple's design philosophy, and may have crossed the legal line. It passes the visual test, and all the average people I know agree it looks near identical. I even mistook the Tab for an iPad at Sam's the other day. It's close enough that Apple has a right to bring this matter to the courts.
Or do you really think that a tablet can only be designed as a 9-10 inch smooth rectangle with rounded corners and a large shiny black bezel? Other tablet design clearly prove this to be wrong. And do you have an argument about the packaging that looks suspiciously like Apple? Samsung's intentions are clearly blatant.
What is your point? LG prada had all those elements and it came out before iphone. iphone copied LG prada then?

Palm Pilots were touchscreen, and look nothing like iDevices. They features concave sides, or rounded edges.
Saying that's the only way to design something is thinking inside the box and shows no innovation. Apple's minimalist design isn't the only right way to design things. Look at the majority of Android phones. The RAZR doesn't look like the 4S.

Let's face facts here...the chances of someone walking into an electronics store, and purchasing a Samsung Galaxy device somehow thinking it was an Apple product/iPad 2 are nearly infinitesimal.
Apple spends tons of money developing their product and marketing how it will fit into your life.
Average consumer sees a pretty thing on TV and they want a pretty thing to call their own.
They go to the store and see a bunch of junk and two pretty things that look exactly alike.
What's the difference? Who cares?
They buy the one the salesmen arbitrarily prefers and they go home happy.
Friend asks, "Why didn't you get the iPad?"
They don't want to feel stupid, so they begin to defend the Galaxy Tab.
How did Samsung earn that sale? Do you see the problem? It's not about fooling an informed consumer, it's about fooling the uninformed masses. They're not picking between Apple and Samsung, they're picking between two pretty boxes, and they're only there because of Apple in the first place. Samsung is specifically using Apple's image to sell their products. Don't you see something wrong with that?
Apple has a patent to be a certain kind of pretty and Samsung is copying it. I can't understand how anyone supports Samsung in this mess.
You completely missed my point on phones. The VAST majority of android phones look nothing like the iPhone, despite sharing several design elements.
No I didn't, I think people here are a little extreme when it comes to products that look similar

They look similar, they don't look identical. The Samsung on the front, and back are different for starters.

Yes, I think the best design of a tablet is a rectangle, that is why they have been built that way for 20 years, rounded corners? The Norand devices I used 15 years ago had rounded corners, my Samsung TV has rounded corners, my Samsung monitor has rounded corners, my Dell monitor beside it has rounded corners. Rounded corners are not unique to Apple, Samsung has a history or using them in their products, I think you are just being extreme.

Again what's your point? The prada was designed independently from the iphone and looks quite similar to an iphone because the major design elements (rectangle, flat slab of glass, rounded corners etc) are functional, not ornamental.

LOL. Almost feels like Apple is trollin' Samsung
It's a good trollin', I tell ya that... LOL... "Here's how not to copy us... just... suck at making a tablet!"

Oh Gawd Not The Prada Phone Again!
...To prove its point, the Cupertino, Calif. tech giant generated a list of possible alternatives that included:
A front surface that is not black.
A shape that is not rectangular.
No rounded corners.
A front surface that is not flat.
Varying Bezel size.
A device that is not thin.
A cluttered appearance.
Perhaps Apple should take its own advice and create iPad 3 with cluttered appearance to distinguish themselves from the GalaxyTab.
Let's face facts here...the chances of someone walking into an electronics store, and purchasing a Samsung Galaxy device somehow thinking it was an Apple product/iPad 2 are nearly infinitesimal.
