Just imagine what Apple could do if it released a 6" iPod Touch for $250 early next year. That could their way of corralling the low end.

($50 credit to open AMZ CC, no taxes & no shipping). So now I can justify my own iPad or Air this Spring (my needs are different)!

I predict your needs will evolve into wanting an iPad in the future.

My point was... 2 Kindle Fires... or 1 iPad. Some holiday shoppers will have to make that decision.

That's surely happening but those aren't necessarily losses for Apple as Kindle Fire means two gifts for another. I think multiple Fire buyers arent likely customers for multiple iPads.

However... Later down the road an iPad might be why they insist on for their next tablet if Amazon doesn't step up their game very quickly.

The MOST you can say is that it doesn't meet your needs.

People are free to do whatever they please. If they wish to go and buy 10 Kindle Fire's, then nobody's stopping them.

That's not going to stop me from expressing my opinions on the matter, and I will still think that it's garbage. I'm not a dictator, and I'm not dictating what people should do.

Only fools who have no idea what they are buying are purchasing the fire and its sales volume will quickly shrink once people figure out that it is no more than a heavily crippled gateway to amazon. Further, you can access the same amazon content on an iPad, using free Amazon provided apps and your web browser, yet do exponentially more in a device far superior for consuming that digital content.

Sounds like you're drownding in Kool Aid. Not everyone drinks apple juice morning, noon and night. Some folks like other flavors. Fortunately they have freedom of choice. Why not put your efforts into a worthwhile endeavor such as ending poverty, rather than saving the world from buying poor tablets?

The phrase "walled garden" gave you away as a ???

I agree that the vast majority of consumers have no concept of the "walled garden" and of those few that do, only a fraction care.

But there is a LOT of ignorance out there. In the conversation I referenced above, there were other people talking. One woman announced with authority that with an iPad, you have to pay $30 a month for data, but "with a tablet, you can use wifi." This was taken as fact by the others listening (all college graduates, all over 50).

Most of other people in the conversation seemed to think if it had a color screen and ran "apps" it was essentially the same...

Worldwide poverty doesn't concern me at all, because if everybody had money, it would be a lot harder for me to get my hands on new Apple products. It was a slight hassle for me to get an iPad 2 earlier this year. I also get far more satisfaction from slamming Android tablets than from helping poverty stricken people, most of which is caused by their own design.

Bless you! You're making the world a little better.

Maybe if you slammed IPads, the sales would tank and you could buy them at "fire" sale prices.\

There were quite a few people who slammed the new iPhone 4S when it came out. Judging by some of the comments made, you'd think that the iPhone 4S was a TouchPadesque like fiasco, with a fire sale waiting right around the corner. It turns out that it doesn't really matter what random commentators say, because in the end, people vote with their wallets, and it turned out to be Apple's best selling phone ever.

I don't slam Android tablets, just for the sake of slamming them. I slam Android because I truly believe that it is a weak OS. I am also tired of reading about the next "great" Android tablet on the horizon, as every single one so far has turned out to be miserable failures.

Agreed. Any loss of market share would be due to a larger base number in the overall audience, not in a loss of sales.

Much more nonsense. As well as many more rumors.

The real joke is that they have no way of knowing of any drop in sales is due to the Kindle Fire. Or simply folks being certain there will be a new iPad no latter than February and waiting for that.

That's how people make money on the stock market.

If I owned a ton of Apple stock, I would probably be talking crap about Apple on monday, starting some false, dumb rumor, and then I'd be praising Apple again on wednesday. Then I'd repeat the process next week again. It's all about the money I think.

    Thanks soooooooo much :-((

In a research note released on Monday, Canaccord Genuity said that while Amazon's tablet is expected to erode Apple's massive market share in the fourth quarter, Apple stock will see a net gain as iPhone sales will be bolstered by global launches and continually strong domestic demand.

Analyst T. Michael Walkley lowered his previous iPad sales estimates from 14 million to 13 million for the quarter ending in December, citing an expected new iPad launch next year and competition from the cheaper Kindle Fire. He writes that by the end of 2011 Amazon will be the No. 2 tablet maker with a 15.3% share, though Apple will easily retain the top spot with well over half the market.

Walkley notes that the almost 21% decrease in iPad market share quarter-to-quarter will be more than offset by increased fourth quarter iPhone sales of 30.5 million units, up from previous estimates of 29 million. He goes on to say that a healthy U.S. demand for Apple's smartphone, particularly from AT&T and Sprint customers, combined with upcoming global launches will net the iPhone its best quarterly performance of the year.

Apple's iPhone 4S is scheduled to launch in some of the world's most populated countries in 2011, including Russia, Brazil and China. The raised iPhone estimates echo recent from other investment banks such as J.P. Morgan.

End of year smartphone sales estimates put Apple in second with its 18% market share trailing Samsung's 19.5%, followed by Nokia and RIM, with 15.7% and 11% respectively.

iPad will once again enjoy a commanding lead with 63.2% of the 2011 tablet market, followed by Samsung with 8.3% and newcomer Amazon with a 6.2% share.

The analyst puts a $560 target price on AAPL stock, with an increased earnings per share for fiscal year 2012 at $34.16, up from $33.52.

Of course I've seen the Apple 1984 ad. I've also read Orwell's 1984 book and I've seen the movie and I've listened to the Eurythmics song, so I know plenty about 1984.

You can be glad that I'm not really a dictator though, because I would certainly ban all Android devices if I were one. I would also send all Fandroids to labor camps where they would be "re-educated"

    Isn't that the truth...

When the original Galaxy Tab came out... everyone said it was amazing. It had camera when the original iPad did not! Yay!

    No one bought it.

Then everyone said "wait till the Honeycomb tablets come out!"

All we got were shipped numbers... no one knows how many were really sold.

Now... all eyes are on the Transformer Prime... "Quad-core... RAWR"

    Meh.

Different strokes for different folks. iPad or Fire or Nook or any other Android tablets....

I wouldn't worry about those sales numbers IF I'm Apple. Apple never worry about inferior products before and I can't think of a reason to right now.

I got a Nook tablet and this is a need for testing ebooks for work. On a personally level, I don't care for either Nook or Fire [poor hardware specs IMHO] but it's what I have for the moment. 7-in = meh!

The form factor is silly...yes, it fits in one hand but you need both to do anything and screen size is only comfortable for reading epubs and lite web-browsing....the consistent pinching and zooming to read original materials that were created in larger print format stinks. The disappointment going on.

That said, if ONE never experience iPad prior to Nook or Fire, they might actually like either or both. I think Nook and Fire are well position for low-end tablet market with just enough features and doesn't suck completely.

    Its all SEMANTICS and FUD

Isn't all rather ironic that when the Apple computer first came out , the nerds all said

    "Its just a toy"

    Then the iPhone came out:

"It's just a toy, it can't do content creation"

    Now the Ipad comes out:

    it just a toy

    The KIndle Fire comes out

    Silence...and

    wait for it ,

    "A media content device" WTF

You see anyone else's  tablet, except Apple's its a POSITIVE:  a toy (good) , "no content creation" becomes "Media Consumption Device"

but if Apple brings out anything the very same descriptions are used as NEGATIVES and flamed incessantly until the sheer weight of the flames overcomes resistance.

Its been happening ever since Apple brought out its first computer

The real reason nerds hate Apple is because Apple breaks the Golden rule of the Nerds, which goes soemthing like this:

"THOU MUST MAKE US LOOK LIKE MAGICIANS BECAUSE WE DESIGN STUFF THAT IS COMPLICATED AND IT MAKES US LOOK GOOD and IS HARD TO USE DELIBERATELY"

Making stuiff that is easy to use , intuitive is a cardinal sin, because it allows "normal" people to use copmuters without the need for us nerds. Which translated means "we can't con you out of money anymore boo hoo!" Now we have a sutution where there is very little money in it for anyone in the Android camp exceSamsung and Google. Apple makes the rest of the profit. Now you know the real reason behind propoganda.
