What just happened here
Wait a second. I was informed by someone in the know that new PBG4s should've been out at Macworld Tokyo.....what just happened? I'm not making this up and there is no reason they shouldnt have new ones out anywayz. Motorola has the same G4 used in the 550 & 667 available NOW at up to 800 MHz at least. Plus, there are new graphics options such as the Radeon Mobility 7500 and new GeForce 4 Go (which is shipping already, Toshiba has a laptop out with it). So what gives here? Also higher resolution displays could be done. I don't get this at all.

Uh... looks like your friend doesn't understand English, cause Apple announced there wouldn't be new CPUs anytime soon. Get over it.
Edit: Hehe... two people beat me to it.

Of course, I'd love to be able to get a G4 laptop that had ADC capability so I could come home and plug 'er in!
Maybe they'd like to sell the overstock first.

Sounds pretty plausible, given that the ship time at the Apple Store is only 1-2 days. Give it a month, and there might be new models (though that's just my completely unknowledgeable guess). Anyway, when they release new models, I will buy one, so here's hoping!
I still say May like I always have.
Perhaps the new portables are going to show up in mid-April. April would be 2 months from the "no new cpus" statement. This could be possible.
Or maybe mid-May. At any rate, there is time for an annoucement before MWNY. Remember last year when the white, 500 MHz iBooks were announced on May 1st...

The PowerBook is old enough now that Apple isn't going to refresh it. They're going to redesign it.
They might be waiting for the 7445. They might be debugging an all-new motherboard. They might have the motherboard totally finished, but they're deep into the intricate process of making it all run cool.
An Apple Event in late April or May doesn't seem that far-fetched.
May 15: "Due to component costs and inflated LCD prices, the Titanium powerbooks will increase $300 in price effective immediately."
Way to go Apple, raise those prices so you can pump up your market share.
LOL, new Titanium revision, w/ ultra-high resolution display announced April 24.

Those who know nothing about economics shouldn't comment on it. The Tibooks have a much higher margin than the iMacs do, thus, they can absorb the component price hikes in the 'books but not in the iMacs. :head exploding:

the ibooks don't and yet their price didn't change.
Except the iMac I guess, since its "Revision B" now.
Amen Agent. At least someone here has good economic sense and knows what it takes to steer a business through component/input shortages.

The price jumped on the iMacs due to the increased demand for 15" LCD's, and possibly the increase in memory prices (though Apple never really decreased their prices for RAM when it hit bottom a few months ago).
If the iMac's 15" LCD display costs too much to keep the iMac's price down, then we should see price increases on other 15" LCD displays on the market. How about some evidence?
I think the price hike has NOTHING to do with manufacturing costs, and EVERYTHING to do with the low supply. Since Apple cannot build enough iMacs, they are trying to make up for lost profits by increasing prices. Component shortages are to blame, along with bad management at Apple.
Apple totally missed out on a great opportunity to expand their market share. Alas, rather than keep the iMac prices down and move larger volumes, Apple has chosen to sell smaller volumes of iMacs at higher prices. An incredibly stupid move, since market share should be Apple's #1 priority right now.
What I would like to know is, what does someone do if they want a desktop Mac, but don't want so spend more than $1000-$1200? Apparently Apple doesn't want their business. And no, the CRT iMac is not an option, it is so outdated and pathetic nobody wants them.

I don't think Apple sees it as a worth-while market to target right now. People interested in machines at that price point are definitely going to be consumers, and the "sweet spot" (where the hump of the bell curve is centered) for consumers is $1500-$2000. Apple markets the new iMac to them quite nicely.
Eventually Apple will expand (back) into the lower markets, but right now, the iMac just costs too much to make it worth while.
just remember that wwdc is geek-mecca for the apple community, and the tibook speaks to that demographic. so my bet is that tibooks go up at wwdc, with ibooks up at macworld july shortly thereafter.
of course, i am just pulling that outta my ass.
