The stylus is so 90's or something that Nintendo would use. Also for those who think it would be great for taking notes, remember those things called paper and pencil. Cost less than 200 bucks and could be replaced easily. You can type on the iPad/iPhone why use a stylus to begin with?
The best line in the commercial was also the biggest fail, and unspoken, only written. It said something to the effect: "The next big thing is already here." Directly followed by, "Coming soon."
The stylus is not "the main input method" for the Note - it's included to be used with very specific functions such as adding hand written notes to photos, a built-in drawing tool with various pressure points (like a pad for a computer), etc. The screen is the same type of touch screen as any other smart phone, and you can use your finger for ANY of the phone's functions - the stylus is just included for those who want to use it for the very specific functions if they don't want to use their fingers - like a pen tablet on a computer. I've actually tried out one of these in beta form, and it's NOT like the old PDAs... it actually works quite well and the stylus adds to the functionality... not takes away from the way you already use a smart phone. I'll also point out that the camera on it is excellent as is the front camera and the screen.
The 5.3 inch screen is what might hurt this thing in the American market, though. Most people (men, especially), don't want to carry a tablet in their pants. Once you put a bumper or skin of some sort on the Note, it becomes just too big to carry in your pants pocket. Women will have an easier time since (most) have purses or handbags, and guys who use brief cases or backpacks may like it. Pants carriers, not so much. So it's not the stylus that's going to hurt this thing - it's the size (and maybe battery life, as at least on the beta, that huge screen sucks up the battery pretty quick).
I could maybe see this being popular in places like construction job sites, Realty, etc... where hand written notes and sketches/drawings are sometimes needed.
I'm not a brand loyal person. I own an iPad and love it, but use an Android phone, and might try a Windows Phone as my next one when the next gen comes out. Apple, Android, Windows... they're all good in their own ways. I just get tired of the back and forth bashing.
if the software and the stylus are well buit, with a very nice not the application that could understand when we are trying to draw figures, referentials, etc, very good for notes during classes... wouldn't it be great? all of your class appointments in one device. perfect for school.
for writting a great stylus with great hardware and software would be pretty good. fingers aren't as good, that's why we use pencils and pens. what am i missing?
The reason we used pencils and pens isn't because fingers weren't as good. We used pens and pencils because neither ink nor graphite comes out of our finger tips to write on dead trees.

You're missing that we've already migrated *from* those as they were clumsy and slow ways to interact touchscreen devices. It's ok though because you could always fall back to the "choice" argument.

You've heard of the yin and yang? They're depicted in the Korean flag.
Well, what you've identified is the ding and dong of Samsung.

What you are missing is that there are exactly two uses for stylus - notes and serious sketching. Most people don't need either generally speaking. They are pretty niche applications, that are reasonably satisfied without a stylus for normal users.
This is an old hat idea that is known to be a failure in the market. And to top it with a 5" screen? really? too small for serious sketching or note taking in class, and too large to be a decent phone. This is the same old PDA rehashed. Nothing to be excited about really.

Have you ever used a stylus for an extended period? (This is discounting professional designers who use them all the time).
A stylus for the normal user (eg me - I had one) is one of the most uncomfortable things you can think of. Why would I use a stylus for taking notes when I can use a much more accurate keyboard (even if it's a finger on a screen).
As someone who owns an iPhone 4S but doesn't harbor the late Steve Jobs' ill will toward Android (I bought a Nexus One in January 2010 and still have it), the Samsung ad fell flat to me. A stylus isn't that attractive. Plus, you don't tend to get new customers by insulting the very people you seek to attract.
I've heard comparisons to the Mac vs. PC commercials, but I disagree. The Mac vs. PC ads were comparing the two PRODUCTS, not customers. It was telling Windows CUSTOMERS that it was OK to like the Mac. The Samsung ads are essentially telling Apple customers that they are idiots, which doesn't tend to endear them to people. Rightly or wrongly, most people don't like being told they are fanboys or idiots.
It's negative advertising which is why it fails.
There has to be a single message in advertising. The message is "why our product/company is the best".
When you start with negative advertising, eg knocking the competition, the message is "why you shouldn't buy from company X or product Y". The message you lose is why you should buy from your company instead. You are simply making reasons why not to buy from your competitor.
There is also the issue of whether negative marketing even works as a lot of people just don't get motivated with negative messages.
Too bad they didn't show anyone holding this phone to their ear. This thing is ridiculously huge at 5.3".. what's next?! 10" smartphone?! and a stylus?
Seriously a stylus? That's exactly what we need, because using our fingers as a stylus has been a failure lol
There is quite an active market for capacative styluses around. My wife has a couple. Quite handy for note taking on the ipad, when the finger is a big fat sausage in comparison.
Yeah, it was a bad commercial. They could have done a lot better. The waiting in line gig was done and over after the first time they used it. They need new material.
Overall the Superbowl ads were pretty lame this year. The half-time show was pretty good. The game itself was the best part though.
